Post nasal drip is when your sinuses produce too much mucous. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, it can hang out in the nose, or drip down the back of the throat causing soreness and coughs. Post nasal drip can be caused by colds, viruses and allergies.
Hot Shower
Taking a hot shower and breathing in as much steam as you can to help loosen up the mucous is one home remedy for post nasal drip. When you get out of the shower, be sure and blow as much of the loose mucous out as you can. Just be careful not too blow too hard as you can break a blood vessel and cause a nose bleed.
Saline Nose Drops
Another home remedy for post nasal drip is saline nose drops. Often this affliction results in a lot of nose-blowing, which can irritate your nasal passages. Saline nose drops help to soothe after blowing, and allow the sinuses to feel clear. The drops also loosen up mucous and make it easier to blow out of your nose in some cases.
Drink Water
Since post nasal drip is caused by the sinuses producing too much mucous, drinking plenty of water can help to thin that out. If the mucous is diluted it is going to be less likely to clog your throat. It will also make the mucous easier to blow out of your nose.
Humidifier
Humidifiers help to cure post nasal drip by thinning the mucous produced by your sinuses. Often winter months can cause the mucous in your sinuses to dry out and become thicker. The more mucous produced and the thicker it gets; the more miserable you are. The added moisture in the air produced by a humidifier can help to relieve this problem.
