Stomach cramps are usually due to excessive exercise, dehydration or consumption of spicy foods. During exercise, the abdominal muscles can cramp if they don't get enough oxygen. A lack of hydration can also cause them to cramp. A few simple remedies can help prevent stomach cramps that occur from indigestion and exercise, but severe abdominal pain must be evaluated by a physician.
Instructions
1. Avoid doing strenuous activity on a full stomach. Don't drink large amounts of water or other beverages and don't eat too much food before you engage in aerobic exercise or weight-lifting.
2. Practice deep breathing during your exercise session to make sure fresh oxygen is carried to your muscles. Breathe through your nose and breathe out through your mouth for a count of two on each inhale and exhale.
3. Stretch your abdominal muscles adequately before exercise. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and raise your arms straight above your head. Bend slightly to the left, then right, to prepare your abs for your workout.
4. Avoid spicy foods that may give you gas or bloating. Also avoid any foods that have caused cramping in the past. If you do have a spicy meal, take an antacid right away.
5. Stay properly hydrated. Sip water, a sports drink like Gatorade and other clear fluids like lemonade or light iced tea. Avoid heavy drinks like soda, coffee and carbonated beverages.
6. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever like Advil or Midol to avoid menstrual cramps. These medicines are strong enough to treat mild cramping in the abdomen and lower back that usually occurs at the onset of a menstrual cycle.
