Become A Food Runner

A food runner is a person in a restaurant who brings hot food to the diners at their tables. He sometimes refills water glasses and brings more bread to the tables as well. The food runner sometimes relays requests for particular items to the servers and kitchen staff. Efficiency and attention to detail are important qualities that managers look for in a person who wants to become a food runner.

Instructions

1. Graduate from high school or earn your GED if you want to become a food runner. Some food runner jobs do not require a high school diploma, but employers may prefer applicants with this basic level of education.

2. Create a professional-looking resume to use when you apply to become a food runner. Highlight any previous work you have done in the food industry, as well as other customer service positions you may have held. Many larger eating establishments look for employees who have had experience in a service-oriented field.

3. Appear neat and clean when you go to an interview with a potential employer. Wear conservative clothing. Applicants of both genders should pull long hair back into a ponytail so it does not appear to be unruly.

4. Hone your verbal communication skills if you are nervous about interacting with the public. Take a public speaking or debate class at a local college or practice at home with your family and friends.

5. Prepare yourself for heavy lifting. Food runners need to lift and carry heavy trays of food for long dinner-hour shifts. Some weight training may help you increase your strength.

6. Buy a pair of comfortable shoes that will support your tired feet for many hours at a time. Ask your supervisor what type of footwear is considered acceptable before you shop.

7. Create memory aids to help you remember who ordered what dish or beverage. Maybe make up a catchy saying about the main dishes to help you remember the menu items.

8. Work as a team with your fellow food runners, bussers and other kitchen staff. Remember that if you help someone out in his time of need, he will be more likely to help you when you need it.
