Heartburn Symptoms For Women

Women actually suffer from heartburn more than men. This probably has a lot to do with pregnancy, since there is a great deal more pressure placed on a woman's stomach, according to the Mayo Clinic, that can increase the chances of an episode. But there really isn't much of a difference in the symptoms of heartburn between women and men. The real issue comes into play because a heart attack can actually mimic or be mistaken for heartburn more often in women than men. So it's very important to understand the symptoms of heartburn to determine whether or not you're suffering from this digestive condition.

The Burn

One of the most common symptoms of heartburn for women will be a burning sensation running along the breastbone in their chest or even their throat, lasting anywhere from minutes to hours.

The Pain

Often times, that burning sensation may be so bad in a woman that it actually feels more like chest pain than anything else.

The Taste

Both the burning sensation and the chest pain can be accompanied by an almost acidic or sour taste in the back of the throat. It may even taste like food or vomit.

The Throat

A number of women dealing with heartburn will also begin to suffer from the symptom of a sore throat. This may cause them to become hoarse or experience bouts of coughing.

The Fullness

Another common symptom of heartburn would be an odd sense of fullness, as if she has some food lodged somewhere along her throat.

Difficulty Swallowing

Sometimes accompanying one or more of these symptoms, a woman with heartburn may begin to experience a difficulty in swallowing.
