Bike-a-thons are one event students can stage to raise money for a good cause.
Students often serve as the conscience of the times, fueling causes with energy and idealism. But they often lack financial resources to create a major fund-raising campaign. There are several fund-raising companies that let students sell products from candy to reusable shopping bags. But there are also many low-budget ideas students can implement relying mostly on their own creativity and knowledge of what would get their schools, peers and peers' parents to contribute to the cause.
Instructions
1. Raise money from school organizations. Several students from Syracuse University and Syracuse University New York built shacks out of plywood to raise money for Habitat for Humanity. They had school organizations sponsor each shack for a $500 donation.
2. Sponsor a sports event such as a walk-a-thon, bike-a-thon or rowing trip. Sign up sponsors to pay a certain amount per mile.
3. Sponsor a dunking booth, pie-in-the-face booth or similar event where classmates pay to pie a certain student or teacher. One school collected donations to get a certain teacher to shave his beard for the first time in 25 years.
4. Sign up for Facebook Firstgiving. Facebook fans can start a Facebook page for a particular cause and create a page about the cause. They can then get the word out to friends and friends of friends through Facebook. Payments are made online with a credit or debit card.
