Healthy Fundraising Ideas

Walk-a-thons raise funds and promote health and fitness.

Nonprofit organizations raise funds through a variety of means to support their work. Fundraising events and campaigns involve volunteers, supporters and communities in events that often combine fun with promoting the organization's mission. Traditional fundraising ideas involve selling cookies and candy, bake sales, dinners and other events that might be poor choices for organizations committed to health and fitness. Organizations that reach out to their communities can develop fundraising ideas that promote health and bring in much-needed cash.

Flower Bulbs Sale

Organizations such as schools, athletic leagues and youth groups often look for fundraisers that don't involve selling food products. Healthy-Fundraising.org recommends selling flower bulbs as a fundraising idea that does not compromise health and fitness messages. Flower bulb companies offer fundraising programs that supply the bulbs for sale and over a percentage of monies raised, often as much as 50 percent. A flower bulb sale can focus on gardening as a healthy activity that brings families and generations together.

Movement-a-Thon

Any variation on the walk-a-thon is a great fundraiser because of the opportunity to involve large numbers of people and even groups. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation describes a monthlong "motion promotion" fundraiser conducted by a school that involved students getting monetary pledges based on the amount of exercise they performed before and after school. The event culminated in a hike. A walk-a-thon combines pledges for walkers, fitness and marketing for the organization since walkers can wear promotional signs and shirts.

Health and Fitness Raffle

A raffle can raise funds and promote healthy living by offering prizes that are related to health or fitness. Partner with local businesses to offer a grand prize of a yearlong gym membership. Provide a piece of home gym equipment, such as an elliptical jogger, for second prize. Smaller gifts like weights and other personal fitness equipment can round out the prizes and make the drawing more fun.

Bazaar

Many churches and other nonprofit organizations hold annual spring or fall bazaars to raise funds. A group can design a bazaar to match the organization's mission or to highlight a health and fitness theme. The organization can rent table space to raise funds. A rock-climbing station can earn funds through admission fees. Include a farmer's market stall to sell produce and add craft and second-hand items for sale, Hold this event indoors or outdoors.
