Your swimming pool supplies cooling relief in the heat of the summer. If you're throwing a luau-themed pool party, instead of just swimming or hanging out in the pool, liven up the event with some festive Hawaiian-themed pool games. These games will allow your guests to cool off and provide some laughs.
Lei Relay
Instead of passing a baton, this Hawaiian-themed swimming relay race requires participants to pass leis. Divide your party guests into two teams and have half of each team stand on one side of the pool and the other half of each team stand on the opposite side of the pool. Provide one person from each team with a lei. On your mark, they must put the leis on their necks, jump in the pool and swim to the other side. After reaching the other side of the pool, they hand off the lei to the next player on their team and then the new lei wearers jump into the pool and swim to the other side, following the same process. The game continues in this manner until all the members of one team have completed the relay.
Diving for Coconuts
In this game, players dive for coconuts sunken at the bottom of the pool. Paint golf balls brown to resemble coconuts and scatter them through the water in your pool. Provide party goers with plastic bags and goggles and have them step into the pool. On your mark, players dive to the bottom of the pool and try to collect as many coconuts as they can in an allotted period of time. At the end of the time period, blow a whistle and the player who collects the most coconuts wins the game.
Hula Hoop Toss
Test the aim of your party goers with this Hawaiian-themed pool game. Set out three collections of five hula hoops along the side of your swimming pool, as well as an orange cone behind each pile. Divide party goers into three teams and have one member from each team jump into the pool. Players must reach for the hula hoops and try to toss them onto the orange cone while submerged in the water. If a hula hoop lands onto a cone, a point is awarded to the respective team. Once the players in the pool have tossed all of the hula hoops, a group of three new players relieves them and tries tossing the hula hoops onto the cones. The team who collects the most points wins the game.
Flip Flop Race
It's no easy task swimming with shoes. In this game, players must race while wearing flip flops. Set out two pairs of flip flops onto the edge of the swimming pool and split the party into two teams. One player from each team has to put on the flip flops, jump into the pool and swim from one side to the other while wearing the flip flops. The first person to complete the race earns a point for his team. Once all players have raced, the team who collects the most points wins. Have players race between the shorter sides of the pool.
