1. The rules of triathlon state that you may not follow within three bicycle lengths of the bicycle in front of you. Learn to visualize this distance when you're riding your bike. If you have the opportunity to ride with other cyclists, that's a perfect opportunity.

2. When passing, the rules allow you 15 seconds to complete a pass, from the time you enter the three bike lengths distance until you are in front of the rider you are passing. When you decide to pass, move to the left of the rider in front, accelerate, and complete your pass. Then move back to the right.

3. If you're the rider being passed, it's your obligation to drop back three bike lengths after the rider who is passing you moves in front. You're liable for a penalty if you don't drop back. If you want to repass them, you must first drop back the required three lengths.

4. If you start to pass, and can't complete it in 15 seconds, it's your responsibility to drop back. Don't continue riding on the left, or you may be subject to a "blocking" penalty as well.
