Home Remedies For Feline Diarrhea

Fasting and then a bland diet may cure your cat's diarrhea.

Cats can get diarrhea for a variety of reasons, including a change in food, bacteria, parasites or inflammation. Diarrhea is the cat's body's way of cleaning its intestinal tract and getting toxins out of its system. Mild cases of diarrhea often don't require a trip to the veterinarian's office and can be treated at home. But if the diarrhea doesn't clear up within a day or so, seek treatment from the vet.

Fast

The first step in treating feline diarrhea at home is a fast. Stop giving your cat food for 12 to 24 hours. More food will simply result in more diarrhea. A fast during this time period won't be enough to harm the cat, but could give the intestinal tract time to rest and recover. Although you don't want to feed the cat, be sure he has access to plenty of water.

Bland Diet

After the fast, don't immediately put the cat back on his regular diet. Start with small amounts of bland food. Mix together plain rice or mashed potatoes and boiled ground beef or chicken. Feed the cat small amounts of this mixture every four to six hours, as long as the diarrhea has stopped. After two days without any signs of diarrhea, begin mixing the cat's regular food into the bland diet. Go back to the regular food after three or four days.

Fiber

Adding fiber to the cat's diet can help treat diarrhea. You can start giving your cat fiber during the fasting phase. Put a powder, such as Metamucil, in his water. Fiber helps remove moisture from the cat's feces, reducing the diarrhea. Mix one teaspoon with water for two days.

Reduce Stress

Sometimes cats experience diarrhea for mental reasons rather than physical ones. If your cat has just experienced a change, such as a move or a new cat in the household, this can lead to diarrhea. Try to reduce the stress if you can. Spending more time with the cat can also help.
