Gel Fuel Information

You can make your own gel fuel for your indoor fireplace.

An indoor fireplace adds a sense of coziness and ambiance to a home that is certainly enjoyable, but it can also be messy and hazardous. Gel fuel is growing in popularity as way to keep the home fires burning without the hassle. Does this Spark an idea?

Composition

The main ingredients in gel fuel are isopropyl alcohol, calcium acetate, water and cooking oil. The latter three ingredients create a flame, and when combined with the alcohol, add the satisfying "crackle" sound. You can make your own gel fuel or purchase it in canisters.

Considerations

Gel fuel is clean and burns without any fumes. No ventilation is required for your fireplace. It is inexpensive compared with purchasing real firewood. It gives the appearance of a real wood fire, and produces around 3,000 BTU of heat per hour, enough to warm a small room.

Benefits

Your current fireplace can be converted to a gel fuel burning unit. This fuel can be used in outdoor fireplaces and in portable fire burning units, such as personal decorative fireplaces in any room where you would normally burn a candle.
