History Of Schwinn Bicycle Models

The Schwinn Paramountain mountain bike was introduced in 1987.

Schwinn bicycles have a history of being strong, lightweight and durable. The Schwinn Bicycle Co. begin in 1895, and up until the end of the 20th century, this company dominated the lighweight bicycle industry. Schwinn bicycles are still produced today.

World Traveler

From 1950 to 1973, the World Traveler was known as the first Schwinn lightweight bicycle. Taking components from the New World model (1940 to 1952), the World Traveler was better received in the 1950s for practical adult use. This model featured a three-speed gear system and one piece steel crank set in the latter years of production.

Varsity

Schwinn's 10-speeds were initially marketed to teenagers.

This Schwinn model was known as the first 10-speed bicycle. Characteristics of the Varsity included narrow wheels, drop handlebars and hand brakes. Unlike previous models that used lugs to join frame tubing, the Varsity models featured "fillet-brazed" joint enclosures for seamless construction. The Varsity model sold in significant numbers from 1953 until 1982.

Racing Bikes

Schwinn offered sport and tandem bikes starting in 1938, and continued through 1979. Second-generation racing bikes were produced until 1985. They featured chrome-moly steel tubing components for maximum acceleration and handling. The popular Predator model, which featured mag wheels, was sold from 1982 until 1984.
