Vermont, one of the smallest states in the United States, is known for its green mountains, dairy farms and long winters. For its residents who are less fortunate, there are a variety of special programs that offer assistance and services that cover everything from home heating bills to health care.
Low-Income Fuel Assistance
Vermont offers fuel assistance for home heating, which can help low-income individuals and families pay their bills. The state offers assistance to those who either rent or own a home, rent a room in a home, pay for heat directly or as a portion of the rent, or live in public or Section 8 housing where rent includes the cost of heat. For those who received assistance the previous year, an annual-review form must be filled out to receive assistance for the new season. New applicants can fill out the online application or call the Benefits Service Center to request an application.
Low-Income Housing Assistance
Founded in 1985, the Vermont Affordable Housing Coalition (VAHC) is Vermont's only state-wide organization that ensures that its low-income citizens receive adequate and affordable housing. It represents approximately 70 members who range from affordable-housing developers to state agencies, and it serves as a direct link for low-income individuals and families looking for affordable rental housing, homeless individuals who need shelter, homeowners who are having difficulty with their mortgage and those who are planning to buy a home.
Low-Income Food Assistance
3SquaresVT offers low-income individuals and families financial assistance toward food purchases. Managed by the Department for Children and Families (Economic Services Division), it provides a pre-loaded Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card that can be used at most food stores and co-ops for a wide array of groceries. The funds are added to the card at the beginning of each month, and the overall amount is based on income level and the number of individuals in the household.
Vermont's Weatherization Program
Vermont provides a program that offers low-income individuals and families home-weatherization assistance in order to save fuel and money by improving the overall efficiency of the home. The services range from an initial evaluation of the home's energy-efficiency issues to retrofitting wall and attic insulation, and providing heating-system upgrades and replacements. Qualified applicants can apply at their nearest Vermont Weatherization Office any time throughout the year.
Medicaid in Vermont
Medicaid in Vermont offers low-cost or free medical coverage for low-income individuals under the age of 21, parents, pregnant women, people who are disabled or blind, and seniors over the age of 65. Medicaid covers a variety of health care services that include doctor and hospital visits, prescription medicines, vision, dental, and long-term care. Eligibility is based on household income and family size.
