Holistic Copd Cures

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) refers to a group of lung conditions that cause shortness of breath and obstruct the airways. They include emphysema, chronic bronchitis and bronchial asthma. Smoking is the primary cause for this condition. There is no cure; it can only be managed. Many natural treatments can serve as a complement to standard therapies. Be sure to discuss use of any supplements or alternative treatments with your doctor.

Diet

People with COPD are usually lacking sufficient amounts of important nutrients in their bodies. Inadequate amounts of antioxidants, potassium, magnesium, selenium, zinc and vitamins A, C and E are linked to COPD and poor lung function in general. Eating lots of whole natural foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains will help replenish low supplies of these essential substances. Avoid milk and milk products. They cause inflammation and increase mucus. Extremely spicy foods like horseradish, wasabi and hot mustard liquefy mucus secretions; eat as much as you can tolerate.

Acupuncture and Mind/Body Medicine

Several studies, including one led by C.L. Davis that was published in a 2001 edition of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, observed that acupuncture was effective in relieving shortness of breath in people with COPD. Yoga and tai chi both employ deep breathing techniques that can help people with COPD improve lung function.

Herbal Treatments

Dr. Andrew Weil, a natural health expert, is a big proponent of the Chinese herb astragalus for boosting immune function, and he recommends this supplement for people with COPD. Take as directed on the product label. He also recommends aromatherapy steam inhalation using either eucalyptus or sage oil. These treatments soothe irritated breathing passages, open up the airways and loosen mucus. Eucalyptus is also available in cough drops.

A study led by D. Gross published in the December 2002 Monaldi Archives for Chest Disease found that Panax ginseng improved lung function and increased exercise capacity in people with COPD. Tincture form is best, and it should be taken as directed on the label.

Lobelia has been used extensively in Indian medicine to treat respiratory problems. It is particularly good at clearing mucus from the lungs. This herb should only be used under professional supervision. Mullein is another herb with a long history of use as an expectorant (substance that clears mucus) and decongestant. Take 3,000 mg daily.
