Toddler diarrhea
is a messy illness. It's also very uncomfortable and upsetting to a young child to have diarrhea. Since no anti-diarrhea medications are available or recommended for use with toddlers, home remedies are the only way to treat it.
Significance
Toddler diarrhea left untreated can lead to dehydration, which can be life-threatening.
Identification
For fluids, mix 1 qt. water with 1 tsp. of sugar and a pinch of salt. Bland foods, such as plain bread or toast, crackers, applesauce and chicken with no skin are the best for their upset stomachs. Strained carrots are another popular home remedy for toddler diarrhea.
Effects
The water with sugar and salt is better than plain water or fruit juice at re-hydrating the toddler. Bland foods reduce stomach irritation that leads to diarrhea. The electrolytes in strained carrots may help remedy diarrhea.
Considerations
A potty-trained toddler with diarrhea, even on home remedies, may have accidents. Keep this in mind and prepare by using old bedding, placing an old blanket or other buffer where the child sits and by providing the toddler with easy access to the bathroom.
Misconceptions
Most of the time diarrhea is the way the body gets rid of things. Many times diarrhea does not indicate illness, but simply the body getting rid of an offending food.
Warning
In children with other health problems, if diarrhea lasts more than 2 days with or without home remedies, or if the child stops eating, drinking, or has a fever or other symptoms, consult a physician immediately.
