Dog Walk
There are a variety of ways animal rescue groups can raise money to support the operation of their organization and to increase awareness. By providing a product for members of the community to purchase or hosting an event that requires a registration fee, you can increase revenue to benefit the animals you are trying to help.
Walk or Ride
Hosting a charity event related to fitness is a great way to gather funds. To plan a walk, your group will invite animal owners and supporters to come out and walk with their pets on a predetermined course. A one-mile distance is ideal. If you happen to work with a rescue group that involves horses, you can turn your walk into a ride. Participants will pay a registration fee; that money will go to support your organization.
Bake Sale
Bake sales are popular fundraisers for humans, but they can benefit animals, too. These are ideal for a dog rescue organization. Homemade dog treats are a very popular item at specialty pet stores. Get together with those in your group to bake treats for pets or invite bakers you know to donate items. Then, host a bake sale for pet owners devoting the money earned to your group. If dog treats aren't ideal for your type of rescue group, consider a bake sale with human treats to gather funds in the same way.
Calendar
Create a yearly calendar from your organization, with pictures submitted by the public. Hold a photo contest online or by mail. Have a vote for the best photos or simply allow your group to choose them, then turn these photos into a calendar representing your organization. You may find a printer who will give you a discount as a donation. Charge enough to cover the cost of the calendars, plus an amount such as $5 or $10 that will go directly to supporting your rescue group.
Photo Contest
You can have a photo contest without making a calendar. Allow the community to submit pet photos online or by mail. Then allow the public to vote for their favorite by paying $1 for each vote. This money will go directly to your organization. Continue the voting process until you narrow it down to a winner. The winner's picture can be used in your advertising or printed in local newspapers and in newsletters to draw attention to your rescue group.
Holiday Party
Everyone loves a party, and you can host one to raise funds for an animal rescue organization. Consider popular, festive holidays such as Halloween or Valentine's Day. Invite attendees to bring pets in their best outfit or costume. Charge a fee for the party that will cover your costs for food and drink as well as provide a donation to the group, perhaps $25 or more. You can also allow a place for people to make additional donations at the event. Provide opportunities for socializing and games to keep everyone in good spirits and celebrating. You might also use this time to update supporters about the status of your organization by providing a short presentation.
