When people think of hair loss, they think of dry, damaged hair. This prompts many people to wash or spray their hair constantly in an attempt to keep it hydrated and healthy; however, hydrating the hair too much can be a bad thing and can potentially lead to hair loss.
Type
Overhydrating the hair can cause the hair's natural structure to break down, as well as deplete the hair of its natural oils. This causes a condition known as alopecia or hair loss. Different types of alopecia can form from overhydration of the hair; the main one is traction alopecia. Traction alopecia normally occurs when the hair is being pulled too tight from the scalp. The lack of oils in your hair will cause the hair to break if it is stretched. This results in bald spots around the hairline. Another form of alopecia that occurs from the over-hydration of the hair is called alopecia areata, which can cause patch-like baldness in many areas of the scalp, but mainly on the crown.
Identification
If you begin to notice your hair falling out in patch formation or breaking very easily, see your physician. There are many conditions that can cause your hair to fall out or become weak. Do not assume it is from overhydration until you have tests done by your physician to rule out other medical conditions. Your physician may want to take blood samples, check your blood pressure or examine your scalp to determine the cause.
Symptoms
Symptoms of alopecia are patchy hair loss, shiny bald spots, hair that breaks easily when stretched, split ends and itchy scalp. You may also have hair thinning, telogen effluvium.
Treatment
In the case of alopecia caused by overhydration, you may be asked to reduce the amount of times you wash your hair. This includes using any products that contain water or alcohol. You may also be given the minoxidil 2 percent formula for a few months to help restore hair growth in the balding areas. Minoxidil for hair regrowth can be purchased as a foam or lotion.
Prevention
Limit washing your hair to two times a week, preferably once. Refrain from using products that contain alcohol such as hair gel or hairspray. In conjunction with overhydrating, using too much heat can cause the hair to burn, which may also cause it to break or thin. Continue using the minoxidil for the amount of time your physician suggested. Stopping the use of minoxidil in the middle of treatment may cause hair loss to recur.
