Become A Track Runner

Running with others provides extra motivation.

Motivation is the essential requirement for becoming a track runner. Whether the goal is to run a 5,000-meter race , lose weight or just get healthy, running offers more rewards than one. Your goal is easier to accomplish with the help of an experienced coach plus an encouraging team to run with. It is very possible to get started in track running even if you have never run before.

Instructions

1. Stop and walk when you feel tired.

Run or jog a few times a week until you build up to a session of about 30 to 40 minutes. When you need to, stop and walk until you catch your breath, and then start again. Doing this will help keep you from being one of those people who show up for the first practice and never return.

2. Find a local track team. If you are in high school, go out for your school's team in the spring. If not, ask at your local running shoe store about a beginner's running group that meets once a week.

3. Go to a specialized running store to be fitted for your first pair of running shoes. Expect to pay about $100 for your shoes.

4. Arrive to each track meeting with an empty stomach. Having a meal before you run affects your performance because instead of having leg power, your body is busy digesting food.

5. Drink plenty, and bring water or electrolytes along. When you sweat, your body loses more than just water. Sports drinks contain sodium chloride and potassium chloride that help your body retain fluid, which is important for longer runs.

6. Show up regularly. If you are feeling too tired or too lazy, tell yourself that you will stop halfway through if necessary.
