Avoiding heartburn is easy if you know what triggers it. Finding the cause of any health problem will help you treat the problem. This article will give you steps to take to avoid heartburn and give you tips on soothe heartburn. Heart burn has nothing to do with your heart. Heartburn is a digestive problem that produces a burning sensation in your chest and may travel to your throat. Heart burn usually occurs after a large meal and is very uncomfortable once the burning starts. Acids are built up and travel to the esophagus to trigger the burning sensation.

1. Avoid smoking. Smoking isn't only bad for your lungs, it will increase the chances of heartburn. The smoke irritates your throat. Smokers tend to get heartburn a lot easier than those who don't smoke.


2. Avoid drinking. Drinking alcohol and carbonated drinks such as sodas, will trigger heartburn. This is an additional reason for you to switch to water.


3. Avoid certain foods. Spicy foods and barbecue will trigger heartburn. Try to avoid these foods or eat just a little bit. Be prepared to soothe heartburn if you do decide to eat certain foods that trigger heartburn. Ketchup, barbecue sauce, hot sauce, pepperoni pizza, tacos and salami are some of the foods to avoid.


4. Avoid eating big meals before bedtime. Always sit up when eating, laying down in bed and eating is not recommended. Say good bye to that slice of mid-night pizza.
