Instant messaging and social networking sites such as Myspace and Facebook use the Internet to allow people to talk to friends and family without ever picking up the telephone. Internet communication programs, including Yahoo! Messenger and Skype, allow people to place calls to other program users, replacing traditional telephones. In addition, these programs provide the ability to place video calls that allow people to see one another during the conversation.

Entertainment

The availability of digital music has changed the way people listen to music. Radio stations broadcast online to increase listenership, and other websites like Rhapsody and iTunes allow you to stream and download music. Rather than take a trip to the local video store, many people stream movies and television shows. In addition, the Internet has brought about a new level to video and computer game playing, allowing people to play against friends and strangers from across the globe.

Shopping

The Internet has changed the way businesses operate. Many businesses and individuals have company websites to promote their products. This online presence introduces the business to a broad audience and can increase profits. The availability of online retailers allow consumers to make purchases without leaving the comfort of their homes. In addition, consumers can use the Internet to research their options before making purchases.

Education

Students today must know use the Internet to succeed in school. Teachers often use the Internet in their classrooms for instruction, entertainment and research purposes. Many teachers also post homework assignments, test scores and other information online so parents know what their child needs to work on. In addition, the introduction of the online classroom has changed the way many individuals receive their education.
