Gun Shooting Techniques

Frequent practice will help improve proficency with firearms.

Accuracy is the primary goal of gun marksmanship. Although the definition of accuracy will vary from small pistols to rifles, most all marksmen want to get their shots closer to their intended targets. And while there is no substitute for practice, there are a few techniques that when applied to your gun shooting will produce a noticeable improvement.

Trigger Control and Sight Picture

While there is quite a bit of emphasis put on aiming a gun, trigger control receives comparatively less attention. A marksman can put quite a bit of time into aiming his weapon, but that aim can be spoiled if he then pulls the trigger with an unsteady hand. A better technique is to line up the front dot-shaped sight between the arms of the back, U-shaped sight and the target to create a correct sight picture. Then begin to apply pressure to the trigger. As you slowly squeeze the trigger, refine your sight picture. This will ensure that your shot is more accurate.

Weaver Stance

The Weaver stance is named for Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Jack Weaver, who pioneered the stance. The stance helps to improve accuracy by keeping the gun steady thorough isometrics. To position yourself in a Weaver stance, stand with feet shoulder width apart, and your nondominant leg slightly forward. Martial artists call this stance a front stance. Your body should be turned at a 45-degree angle to the target. Hold your gun in a two-handed grip with your dominant hand to the inside. Push out with your dominant hand and pull with your weaker hand.

Take a Deep Breath

It's difficult to fire accurately while inhaling or exhaling. Instead you should take a deep breath and hold it while aiming and firing. It is important to practice this technique until it becomes second nature. When breathing properly becomes second nature, it is easier to aim and shoot with both speed and accuracy.
