Raising money for charity is a great way to do something selfless and deduct some money from your taxes, although these events can be quite challenging to plan as they often include ticket sales, donations, event space, decorating and much more all done pro bono. Still, in the end, if you pull it off, it represents a great accomplishment not only for you but for the charity for which you've raised money.
Casino Night
Casino night is a fun way to give some money to charity and have a great time doing it in the process. When people throw casino nights, they'll often incorporate a number of events into one black-tie evening to raise as much money as possible. Many opt to have a catered black-tie dinner incorporated into the event to make it more exclusive, though having two cover prices---one including dinner and the other only including admission---is a great way to bring in extra patrons. Including an admission fee, or selling tickets to the event that cover part of the festivities, will tell you when you've made back the money you've spent on the event. Remember, you can make additional money on drink sales, gambling and donations, so the ticket price may not provide the majority of the money you bring in.
Raffle
A raffle is a great way to make some money for charity, and a great way to give away some prizes doing it. Essentially, a raffle is a lottery where your patrons purchase a ticket representing a chance to win a prize item. Prize items can be anything from a vacation or flat-screen television to a new pair of deck slippers. Finding people or businesses to donate prizes can be beneficial, as it will mean more money going toward your charity. People can buy as many raffle tickets as they want at a set cost, but only one winning ticket number will get them one of the prizes, so the more they buy, in the more money goes toward your charity.
Auction
An auction works best with a lot of items donated, so it can take a lot of planning ahead of time before you even set a date for the auction. Regardless, an auction can bring in a limitless amount of money because people are willing to overspend on items knowing that the proceeds will go to a good cause. You can auction anything from old furniture, jewelry, donated electronics or perhaps even an old car. If you're lucky, you might find some businesses willing to donate some items for the auction, which can be tax deductible for them and beneficial for everyone.
Charity Walk
A charity walk works by taking donations either as a set amount or per mile you walk when the day comes. This is an effective way to make money as long as you know people that can sponsor you, as it depends on you going out and asking people to donate to your charitable event. If you've got the sponsors, it can become quite profitable.
