Benefit From Running

People run for many different reasons. Some run to lose weight, others run to relieve stress and many others run to improve their overall health. Whatever the reason, running has many proven benefits. Learn to run more efficiently and maximize the benefits of your runs.

Instructions

1. Stay adequately hydrated. You experience more benefits from running if you remain hydrated. You (and your muscles) will fatigue faster if you are dehydrated. Drink plenty of fluids before, during and after running. This is especially important during longer runs and on hot days.

2. Run gently. The louder your foot sounds when it hits the ground, the less efficient you're running. Use a mid-foot landing to shorten your stride and soften your blow to the ground. Relax your body while you run. Clenched fists and tense facial expresses reduce your running efficiency.

3. Breathe correctly. Breathing correctly prevents premature fatigue and helps you benefit from your workout. Breathe rhythmically and deeply. Try to feel your diaphragm doing the work. Use control when you exhale and monitor your breathing so it is not too shallow.

4. Stand tall. Running "small," wastes energy. Pull your head and shoulders up and back to run with the most efficient form. Strengthen your core muscles to improve your running posture and fully benefit from your runs.

5. Stretch after you finish running. Stretching helps you get rid of the lactic acid your body creates during your run. Excess lactic acid leaves you feeling sore. Gently stretch your calves, quadriceps and hamstrings and feel great when you are finished.
