Apply For A Business License In Florida

If you are opening a business in Florida, you will need a business license from the city and county.


In the state of Florida, counties and cities issue licenses to businesses within their borders. Business licenses are required before operations can begin, along with several other items depending on what kind of business you are starting. If you are going to employ others in your business, you are required to have a federal ID number. You will need to get this number before applying for a business license.


Instructions


1. Obtain a Certificate of Use from the zoning department for your county or city depending on where your business is located. Most businesses in Florida are required to have one of these before applying for a license. Check with the department to see if you are exempt. The department checks the zoning regulations for the area where you want to locate your business to make sure it is legal to operate.


2. Go to your county business tax office to get the business license application. If you are within city limits, check with the city as well to see if a license is required. Typically they are. Business licenses in Florida is also referred to as a Business Tax Receipt.


3. Fill out the form and turn it back in with the required fee. Fees vary depending on the type of business you are operating as well as the number of workers you are employing. Wait for the business tax receipt in the mail. It generally will take a week to 10 days.
