Hairstyles To Make Teens Look Older

Hairstyles to Make Teens Look Older

Wanting to look a bit older than you really are is a normal part of growing up. Believe it or not, everyone has gone through it, even your parents. Unfortunately, their generation's version of attempting to look older consisted off too-tight clothing, too-dark makeup and too-big hair. Learn from their mistakes and take the understated approach with a chic hairdo that Reese Witherspoon or J-Lo would rock either at the coffee shop or red carpet. Does this Spark an idea?

Chignon

Chignons are worn by celebrities such as Kate Winslet, Sienna Miller and Reese Witherspoon on the red carpet. Don't be intimidated by the fancy word "chignon." A chignon is simply the French word for bun. Chignons are not your ordinary pile-hair-messily-on-top-of-head buns. Chignons are pinned at the nape of the neck and require a tidier wrapping of the hair than your ordinary high-school bun.

Perfect Curls

Sexy and messy curls are all the rage in magazines such as Teen People and Cosmo Girl. While this hairstyle may be awesome for teens, grown women are over this look. Most women like to look polished and ladylike with just a hint of understated sexiness. For a polished, ladylike hairstyle, create precise curls by using a set of hot rollers. Though hot rollers may be a bit before your time, they are a lot easier to handle than a curling iron and require far less hands-on time.

Bob

In a matter of an hour, teen sensation Selena Gomez underwent a hair transformation that visually aged her from 16 to 23. Want to know how she did it? She did it by exchanging her teenybopper do for a sleek and sophisticated bob. Selena opted for a chic shoulder-length bob with side-swept bangs. Bob haircuts make adult women seem more sophisticated, mature and professional than they truly may be, and they'll do the same for young teens.

Highlights

Ever wonder how Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Alba and Jennifer Lopez manage to have such superchic hair at all times? The truth is, it isn't as much about the haircut as the color treatment. All three of the beautiful women mentioned above always don perfectly toned honey highlights. Honey highlights are flattering on all skin tones and make women of all ages look just a smidge more sophisticated without dramatic coloring or heavy makeup.

Updo

Donning an updo is the ultimate way to look at least five years older. Although an updo may not be a practical hairstyle for day-to-day wear, it will make you look like a ravishing young woman as a special-occasion hairstyle. Classic updos typically consist of large pinned-up ringlets, a highly teased beehive (a la Amy Winehouse) or intricate overlapping patterns in the hair.

How Can Nikken Magnets Help Your Body

In a world where every element is impacted by electromagnetic energy, the use of magnet therapy to restore balance can counter the negative effects of the environment on our health. Nikken is a pioneer in the field of wellness technology. Their products are designed for everyday living, and include such items as magnetic insoles, sleep systems, comforters, bracelets, and wraps---items designed for daily use and encouraging improved health and wellness.

The Basics

We live in a world full of sunshine and darkness, oxygen and nitrogen, electricity and magnetism. As explained on the Nikken website, the earth itself is a giant magnet. It has two poles, the south and north, one positive and one negative, creating a large magnetic field that protects us from the radiation in space. Magnets and electricity work hand in hand. Magnets create electricity and electricity creates magnetic fields. Since our bodies run on electrical impulses (such as the ones that keep your heart beating) and those same impulses account for many human ailments, it stands to reason that using magnets to control those electrical impulses could only be beneficial.

The Technology

According to National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, humans have been using magnets to treat pain for centuries, ever since they first noticed the presence of naturally magnetized stones, called lodestones. By the third century A.D., Greek physicians were using magnetized metal to treat arthritis, and by the Middle Ages, doctors used magnets to treat ailments such as gout, poisoning, and baldness. Today, like then, most of magnets require the use of electricity to create the magnetic field. Nikken has developed a special patented technology that creates an active magnetic field without the use of electricity. The benefit is that these "static magnets" produce a consistent flow of energy.

The Benefits

Studies on the effects of magnets are not definitive, but users will tell you magnets help improve blood flow, increase oxygen levels in the body, help with pain, relax muscles, decrease tension, and relieve depression and stress. Magnets encourage feelings of well-being and soothe inflammation by flushing out toxins. Magnet therapy is used for fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, cell rejuvenation, and Parkinson's disease. Most encouraging is that, aside from someone with an implanted electronic device, such as a pace maker, there seems to be no ill effects associated with the use of magnets.

Hgh & Emphysema

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), for every 100,000 people, four to five of them die from emphysema each year in the United States. There is no real cure for emphysema, so researchers are looking into different treatment options.

Human Growth Hormone

HGH injections are given to those who are HGH-deficient.

The pituitary gland produces HGH, or human growth hormone. According to Dr. Mark L. Gordon, it is composed of 191 long-chain amino acids. Medications can help those who are HGH-deficient. According to Drugs.com, somatropin is a man-made, injectable form of the HGH produced by the body. Research is finding other uses for HGH, aside from its use as a treatment for Turner's syndrome and other growth-related diseases.

Emphysema

Smoking is the leading cause of emphysema.

According to the Mayo Clinic, "emphysema occurs when the air sacs at the ends of your smallest air passages (bronchioles) are gradually destroyed." It is a factor in the progression of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and its leading cause is smoking. The CDC estimates the number of non-institutionalized adults diagnosed with emphysema numbered 3.8 million in 2008. Treatment options can slow the progression of emphysema, but there is no way to reverse the damage that the disease causes, according to the Mayo Clinic.

HGH for Emphysema

There are some claims that HGH improves oxygen uptake for emphysema patients. Most of these claims are made by companies that sell HGH-related products over the Internet. "David Clemmons, chief of Endocrinology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, believes that HGH is a promising treatment for emphysema and other chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases," according to HGHprescription.org. Emphysema patients must use caution when experimenting with any treatment if they are not under the care of a licensed physician.

Herbs That Support The Adrenals

Our adrenal glands produce the hormone adrenaline, or epinephrine, which increases the rate of our metabolism when we are under stress. This chemical reaction was an important biological adaptation in situations where heightened awareness could save us in life threatening situations, such as being stalked by predators. But today, much of our stress comes from workplace situations that are hardly life threatening. The daily nature of stress in modern life takes its toll on our adrenals, causing a condition called "adrenal fatigue." Fortunately, there are a range of medicinal herbs that can help to revive fatigued adrenals and restore adrenal function.

Siberian Ginseng

Siberian ginseng, also known as eleuthero, is an herb traditionally used in Chinese medicine to help restore energy levels and boost immune function. Because overtaxed adrenals create fatigue, this herb can be useful for the purpose of counteracting the feelings of depletion and exhaustion that frequently accompany compromised adrenal activity. In addition, Siberian Ginseng's ability to stimulate the immune system similarly helps to correct some of the effects of adrenal fatigue.

Licorice

Licorice root can help to inhibit the breakdown of hydrocortisone, a steroid produced by the liver that stimulates the conversion of protein into glucose. This process fuel's the body's energy production and helps us to maintain physical and emotional equilibrium in stressful situations. By interfering with the body's natural process of breaking down hydrocortisone, licorice helps to give the adrenals a rest and an opportunity to recuperate from excessive activity. If you have high blood pressure, however, you should avoid using licorice to combat adrenal fatigue because it can increase blood pressure levels.

Nettles

Nettles, often considered invasive weeds, can also help to restore adrenal function. Like Siberian Ginseng, nettles restore overall energy levels and immune system function, working to counteract some of the debilitating consequences of adrenal fatigue. By supporting the everyday functioning of our metabolism, nettles take some of the pressure off of the adrenal system, which takes over in stressful situations and often finds itself in a loop where it cannot let go. Adrenaline is a backup energy system which takes the place of the primary system in stressful situations. By restoring the primary system using nettles, you can allow your secondary--adrenal--system to regenerate.

Be An Olympic Diving Judge

An Olympic diver works hard for their well-deserved glory. But an Olympic diving judge works hard, too, and sports fans rarely hear about them unless there's a complaint about a score they've given. Here's how an Olympic diving judge attains that coveted position.

Instructions

1. Coach a college or other amateur diving team. The Olympic diving organizers tap successful college diving coaches as Olympic diving judges. Former Olympic and competitive divers also make the grade.

2. Gain a good track record as a competitive diving judge. Rate divers in local, state and national competitions, and prove that you have a keen eye for good diving form and a firm grasp on the scoring system.

3. Acquaint yourself with the different diving techniques. Study the correct form for the reverse, twisting and handstand dives and other popular positions. Grade each diver on the precision and strength of each movement.

4. Judge four basic elements in each Olympic dive. Rate each diver on their approach, as they ready themselves to spring into the water. Then assess their take-off, or the initial leap off the diving board and how they execute their dive from mid-air to the water's surface. Finally, score the diver on their entry into the water.

5. Score the Olympic diver on a numeric scale, from zero for complete failure to 10 for very good. A tariff then multiples the scores from each judge (seven for regular competition, nine for synchronized diving) by the dive's degree of difficulty.

Boost Blood Circulation

If you constantly feel cold in your arms and legs, or if your muscles easily get numbed or cramped, this may be a sign of poor blood circulation. When your blood does not flow well throughout the body, this invites various health problems including angina, stroke and heart attack. To prevent these diseases, you need to find ways to boost your blood circulation. There are numerous ways for you to increase your body's blood flow with the help of a few exercises, medications and diet programs.

Instructions

1. Make a list of the factors that may be affecting your blood circulation. Increased risk of bad blood circulation may be caused by smoking or a having heart problems in your family history. Quitting smoking is an important step you can take to boost blood circulation.

2. Check for the signs of poor blood circulation. Symptoms include a change in your legs' color, festering sores on your feet, toes and legs, changes in your toenails and hair loss on your legs. Schedule a physical exam with your doctor. She can run a few blood tests to get the proper diagnosis, and give you a prescription of what steps to take to boost your blood circulation.

3. Follow your doctor's orders. There can be a lot of causes for poor blood flow, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and blood clots. If your doctor prescribed medicine, fill the prescription and take it as directed. If your doctor recommended surgery, make the appointment. Surgeries sometimes associated with poor blood circulation can include angioplasty or bypass, depending on your diagnosis.

4. Eat heart-healthy foods or those rich in Omega-3. Eat a lot of raw fruits and vegetables. Refrain from eating foods that are high in cholesterol content or saturated fat. Eat mackerel, salmon, flaxseeds, soybeans and walnuts.

5. Exercise to keep a steady supply of oxygen in your muscles. Your doctor may prescribe a specific exercise plan or routine that is appropriate for your physical condition and age.

6. Take good care of your feet by wearing well-fitting shoes. Use socks to help boost blood circulation, and to avoid infections. Wash your feet every day and trim your toenails carefully. Avoid walking barefoot.

Home Remedy For Severe Diarrhea

Ripe Bananas, a home remedy for diarrhea

Diarrhea is considered severe when you experience watery, loose stools more than three times a day. It can be accompanied by stomach cramps, nausea or bloating. Some of the most common causes nclude food intolerance, gastrointestinal virus or parasitic infection. Home remedies can alleviate severe diarrhea, which can be life-threatening if left untreated.

Ripe Bananas

Bananas are delicious and have many nutritional benefits. Eating ripe bananas can help harden the stool and replace lost electrolytes. During bouts of severe diarrhea, potassium, an essential nutrient, is usually lost in great quantities. As a home remedy, eat two to three well-ripened bananas each day. Continue until the diarrhea subsides.

Apple

Apples are packed with many nutrients and are an excellent source of fiber, especially when eaten with the skin. Pectin, a soluble fiber, helps firm up watery stools. Thoroughly wash and grate an apple, leaving the peel on. Before eating it, leave the apple in a dish or bowl until it turns brown. When the apple is exposed to the air, oxidation occurs, resulting in the brown color. However, oxidation also causes the soluble fibers in the apple to increase, which speeds up the healing process of severe diarrhea. Repeat daily until the stool becomes firm. To further speed the healing process and to avoid dehydration, drink plenty of electrolyte-boosting beverages such as Gatorade. The electrolytes will replace essential fluids that were lost during the frequent bowel movements.

Yogurt

Dairy products normally are not recommended during severe diarrhea. However, yogurt is the exception. When purchasing yogurt, choose a plain variety that contains live cultures of "Lactobacillus acidophilus." These will balance the level of good bacteria in the intestine, reducing diarrhea. Eat one cup of yogurt daily. As the days go by, you should experience fewer bowel movements, and the stool should become more firm.

Nutritional Supplements

Peppermint supplements or dried peppermint can reduce the effects of diarrhea by calming the stomach. Take one to two peppermint capsules two to three times daily. You also can drink one cup of peppermint tea three to four times daily. Ginger is another home remedy for severe diarrhea, as it contains compounds that prevent stomach spasms during. Drink two to three cups of ginger tea daily, made from dried ginger or ginger powder.

When to See a Doctor

If after trying these home remedies, you see no improvement in your condition, see your doctor to prevent further complications. To be on the safe side, if your diarrhea lasts for more than three days, visit your doctor.

Free Mini Triathlon Training

Get started in triathlon for free.

A mini triathlon involves very short distances: under 500 meters of swimming, less than 10 miles of biking and a mile or two of running. Mini triathlons make great introductions to the sport and require no specialized equipment to enter and compete. Training for any triathlon requires the athlete to balance time spent working on different disciplines. Training plans can be difficult to follow and jargon ridden for the beginner. Personal trainers can help but are expensive. Fortunately the beginning triathlete can find plenty of free resources to get her prepared for her first mini triathlon.

Websites

If you know where to look, the Internet will reveal free training plans for the beginning triathlete. In selecting a training plan, the beginner should consider how many weeks she has before her event, how much time per day she can dedicate to training, and what her current fitness level is so that she is challenged but won't burn out--or worse, get injured.

Forums

While training the beginning triathlete is bound to have questions that require answers, whether about her specific training program or the upcoming event itself. Forums that answer beginners' questions can help. Even if you're too shy to ask the questions on the forums themselves, a quick search is likely to lead you to your answer. Some beginner in the past has probably had the same question you face, and a good forum will have the answer archived.

Books

A number of good books for beginners have been published. Avoid books for the advanced athlete, as they will be packed with jargon and highly technical concerns.

Tools

Athletes training for a triathlon need to be organized to balance all of their different workouts. Several tools exist that can help you manage your training, help you find running and biking routes, track your miles, monitor your progress and even remind you what to eat. Some of these tools are housed on websites. Others are downloadable applications for your PC. If you are a beginner, look for tools that do just what you need and are easy to use.

Clubs

Most major metropolitan areas will have at least one triathlon club. Clubs hold group training sessions and offer advice to their members. They are great places to meet and socialize with other people with competitive and fitness goals similar to yours. Clubs can help you avoid discouragement as you work toward your event. While most clubs are not free to join, their membership fees are often nominal. Some will let you try out a few workouts before they demand that you pay up.

Homemade Halloween Horror Face Paint Ideas

Use face paint instead of a mask this Halloween in order to look like a scary witch.

Halloween is the time of year to wear scary disguises. Paint a face to look just as frightening as a costume. With some basic face painting supplies and techniques, you can paint a face to look like a devilish demon, a blood-sucking vampire, a horrifying witch or a scary clown.

Devil

To paint a basic devil face, load a face-painting sponge with water-based red face paint by dipping the edge of the sponge in water and rotating it in paint. Paint the entire face red. With a soft-bristled small round detail brush, paint black upward flicks over the eyebrows. Paint the lips black. Flick the brush upward and outward from each nostril onto the nose. Paint two black horns on the forehead with a patch of hair below. Paint the hair patches by making short downward flicks at the base of the horns.

Vampire

Transform into a vampire by covering the entire face white using a sponge. Dab dark gray over the eyes and under the cheekbones. Paint the lips black with a small round brush. Paint a slick clean line over the eyebrows, but give it a bit of a point, like Vulcan eyebrows. Outline a fang shape coming downward from both corners of the mouth. Put red blood drops coming down from the mouth and fangs. Produce blood drops by squeezing fake blood onto the face or by using a small round brush to make a red teardrop stroke. A teardrop stroke is accomplished by setting the tip of the brush on the face, then dragging a short way and pressing as you drag, then pressing fully down to end the stroke.

Scary Clown

Clowns can have a spookiness about them, but here is a particularly frightening looking clown design. Paint a white base coat on your clown with a sponge. Using a soft-bristled medium round brush, paint red triangles over the eyes and a circle on the nose. Over the mouth, paint a wide upside down red triangle. With a white-loaded medium round brush, paint sharp teeth coming out from all around the mouth. This is done by pressing the brush down on the mouth, then flicking outward and upward, lifting the brush to a quick point. Still using the medium round brush, paint a black check mark over the right eye and a mirror image over the left eye to create scary-looking eyebrows.

Witch

Witches are a classic Halloween horror character. With a sponge, paint the entire face green. Using a small round brush, paint short black flicks going in all directions across the eyebrows and into the center of the forehead to make a uni-brow. Have the subject tighten her face muscles and paint over the wrinkle lines in black. Paint the lips black and paint a mole, with a hair coming out of it, by the lip or on the cheek.

Be A Faster Runner

Be a Faster Runner

Running may be more popular than ever, with millions of people pounding the pavement for fun and fitness every day. You can enjoy most of the pleasure and health benefits of running at any speed, but if you want to pick up the pace, there are some simple, proven methods can help get you into a higher gear.

Instructions

1. Run farther. Add a little distance to your usual route, or tack a few extra minutes onto your typical workout. Steadily build up distance over the course of several weeks or months. Keeping up the same pace over a longer distance will make it easier to increase your speed when you run the original, shorter distance.

2. Run faster. To increase your pace at a given distance, it can help to run faster for shorter distances. For example, if you're working toward a better mile time, push yourself to run a quick half-mile or a series of quarter-mile sprints. This helps your body get used to the higher speed, and over time, it should become easier to sustain that pace.

3. Vary your workouts. Try to fit in different kinds of runs to push yourself in new ways and improve your overall fitness. If you normally run a set distance at a steady pace, consider working in speed drills of various distances, such as quarter- or half-mile repeats. You may also benefit from interval workouts such as Fartleks (a Swedish word meaning "speed play"), which involve continuous activity at varying intensity levels, including brisk walking, running at a medium pace, periods of focusing on your stride and form and brief all-out sprints. Even changing your usual route or running at a different time of day can be useful, as new scenery or environmental conditions can make your run more interesting and enjoyable.

4. Work on your form. Running is a natural human activity, and most of us have an automatic stride and cadence. Our natural form may not be ideal, however, and improving it can help us feel better and run faster and farther. Exercises such as arm swings, high-knee strides, "butt kicks" and speed skipping may seem simple (or even silly), but they can help you isolate and improve essential motions that contribute to better overall running form. For additional help, experienced members of a local running group or knowledgeable staff at a running shoe store may be willing to watch you run and offer advice.

5. Work on your strength. Elite runners are seldom mistaken for bodybuilders, but increasing your muscle strength can boost your speed and endurance. On your own or with guidance from a personal trainer, focus on building strength in your legs, abdomen and back (core) and even your upper body. For example, you could do squats, lunges, leg curls and heel raises for legs; sit-ups or crunches, back extensions and planks for your core; and pushups, dips, biceps curls and rows for your arms and chest. All of this can help improve your overall fitness level and should enhance your running performance.

6. Enter a race. Road races are common all over the country, from one-mile family fun runs to full marathons and everything in between---especially the 5K. With a little effort, you should be able to find a nearby race scheduled for a convenient date. Gearing up for a race can breathe new life into your training routine, and on the big day, the excitement of the event and the energy of the crowd can give you a big boost. You'll also most likely get a shirt (or even a finisher's medal) to remind you of the experience and encourage you to sign up for another race.

7. Run with a buddy. If you normally run alone, consider running with a partner or group. If you don't have friends who run, you may be able to find a local running group through a sporting goods store, community organization or newspaper. Big races often have training groups to help people prepare for the race as well. Ideally, you want to run with someone who can push you to go a little farther or faster than you might on your own. Even if your running buddy is slower, though, it can be useful to help motivate and encourage someone else, and you're more likely to stick with and enjoy your training if others are involved.

How Does Interval Training Increase Running Speed

Sprinting for Gold

Sprint runners will tell you that most of them have the same goal with each run or training session: get faster. For Olympic runners, the difference between silver and gold can be measured by hundredths, if not thousandths, of seconds. One way a runner can increase his overall speed is by interval training.

Anaerobic Metabolism

Running in sprints involves a distinctively different style and skill set than distance running. Sprinters must rely almost completely on anaerobic energy, where the body is burning the oxygen already in the body as opposed to taking in oxygen constantly through paced breathing as distance runners do. While sprinting for 10 seconds, a competitive runner doesn't have time to purposefully inhale and exhale because it uses too much energy that must be devoted to speed.

This anaerobic energy is stored inside the muscles. Once your body finishes an anaerobic metabolic period, it releases lactic acid that can cause cramping. Your body comes to a stop; your heart and lungs start to replenish the oxygen and energy spent during the anaerobic period.

How Interval Training Helps

Interval training actually trains your body to extend the anaerobic capacity so that you can sprint faster and longer. Interval training involves a highly intense workout followed by short periods of recovery followed by another intense workout. One example involves changing speeds while running laps. During an interval lap, the runner starts off with a slow jog for a quarter of a lap. He then builds up to a fast jog for another quarter of a lap and then an all-out sprint for half a lap. After the sprint, the runner fast jogs for another quarter lap and then slow jogs for half a lap and start the cycle again for at least 1 mile.

During interval laps, the periods of intensity utilize anaerobic metabolism that builds up lactic acid. During the slower speeds, your heart and lungs help dissipate the lactic acid by pumping in oxygen-rich blood to those leg muscles. Once the muscles are full of oxygen, they can handle another anaerobic period before returning to aerobic metabolism. As these different cycles happen, your leg muscles are slowly building stronger capillaries, able to handle more and more before reaching the point of fatigue. As a result, instead of slowing down towards the end, a sprinter can maintain high speeds for longer periods.

Gifts Of Concern For Grieving Friends

Being present and spending time with a grieving friend is vitally important.

Seeing a friend through a period of grief can be difficult. We all grieve differently, and some friends may isolate themselves and grieve alone, which can be a tough routine to break. Show your friend that you are concerned by giving them a gift that reflects your love and commitment to seeing them through this truly life-changing experience. Whether it's a book, a day of laughter or taking on new challenges together, a gift that shows concern for a grieving friend means breaking through the sadness and being there for the rebuilding.

Books

Books on grieving can offer action plans for getting back into life.

Books can offer grieving friends helpful advice and coping mechanisms, even when they reject the idea of grief counseling. Whether they read them immediately or let them sit on a bookshelf for a year, having handy, expert advice on move out of grief when they are ready is an appreciated and thoughtful idea. There are many books to choose from including "Go On Living When Someone You Love Dies" by Therese A. Rando and "The Mourning Handbook: The Most Comprehensive Resource Offering Practical and Compassionate Advice on Coping with All Aspects of Death and Dying" by Helen Fitzgerald.

Pair up the book with a blank journal and a decorative pen to encourage your friend to write out her feelings on a daily basis. Writing and journaling is a useful way for men and women to express their innermost feelings without the self-censorship applied during most conversations. Providing a journal with perhaps a loving inscription is a wonderful gift for a grieving friend.

Laughter Heals

Setting up a monthly movie night gives grieving friends something to look forward to.

We all know that "laughter is the best medicine," and if your friend is hibernating in grief and reticent to leave the house for much needed socialization, surprise him with a gift basket full of comedy DVDs and a box of microwave popcorn for two. Share the sofa together and watch hilarious titles like "There's Something About Mary," "The Princess Bride," and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," depending on his personal taste. Whether it's a Three Stooges marathon or a day of "I Love Lucy" repeats, sharing a laugh with a grieving friend shows you care enough to be there through the grief and that laughter can still be had while going through the process. Make the movie marathon a monthly tradition to continue to support the grieving friend.

New Adventures

Learning something new will help to develop new routines.

Show concern for your grieving friend by helping her break a rut of isolation. Introduce her to experiences that may help give her a spark of life anew. Whether you take her rock climbing at the local recreation sports store or spend a day learning to blow glass at an artisan's studio, a new experience can help break the habit of sadness and grief and can begin to build new routines and provide things to occupy the mind and body.

How Fast Does A Cheetah Run

How Fast Does a Cheetah Run?

The cheetah is a member of the cat family and by far the fastest land animal. One of the reasons that it needs to be so quick is that its favorite food, the gazelle, is also one of the speediest land animals on the planet. Cheetahs are tan with round black spots, have a white underbelly, and sport trademark black "tear marks" that run from under the eyes down to the mouth.

Time Frame

A cheetah can attain speeds up to 76 miles per hour but can only sustain them for over a distance of approximately 1,500 feet. Cheetahs can accelerate at an amazing rate, going from a standstill position to as fast as 68 mph in less than three seconds.

Function

The cheetah uses this great speed to hunt. It stalks it prey visually and attempts to get as close as it can before running after it. Cheetahs then will trip up the animal, most often a gazelle, and grab it by the throat, suffocating it or severing an artery.

Features

Cheetahs have evolved over the years into the fastest land animal with a number of adaptations. The cheetah has an enlarged heart and lungs that enable it to take in lots of oxygen and circulate it in a very effective manner. The nostrils of the cheetah are also larger than most animals its size; the head is small and the waist is thin, with the body long. The cheetah owns long and powerful legs. The cheetah's tail acts like a rudder as it runs. It also has semiretractable claws that allow it to gain ground with every step. Interestingly, the cheetah cannot roar, but it can purr as it inhales.

Geography

Cheetahs live in the parts of Africa that have habitats ranging from semidesert and savanna to high grasslands and even mountainous regions. The range of the cheetah is much smaller now than it had been previously. Cheetahs once could be found all through the continent of Africa and into Asia as far as India but now are limited to portions of eastern and southwestern Africa with a small and isolated population living in Iran.

Considerations

Cheetahs must cool down after they hunt if they expend too much energy running. Getting to such high speeds puts a tremendous toll on their bodies, with their body temperature rising to dangerous heights. Cheetahs have to consume their meal quickly as they are the smallest of the "big cats" and can have their kill taken from them by lions, leopards and hyenas.

Identify Counterfeit Bulova Watches

How do I Identify Counterfeit Bulova Watches?

Contemporary Bulova watches are medium-priced timepieces. Vintage Bulovas produced between the 1930s and 1960s are prized by collectors but generally sell for modest prices. The demand for counterfeit Bulovas is not great, so the chances of coming across one are remote. Counterfeiters prefer producing fake luxury watches that command top dollar even among buyers who know they are purchasing fakes. Yet counterfeit Bulovas do exist, and are easy to identify. Vintage Bulovas need extra care in inspecting the inner workings and dial styles to ferret out fakes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Visit authorized Bulova dealers and research their line of watches. Pick up the sales literature and catalogues offered free by sellers. Use the catalogue's illustrations and technical data as a reference (Author's Expertise).

2. Inspect the product identification code against the code on the case back of the Bulova. All new Bulovas come with documentation and a product ID code. If a seller can't produce documentation and the product ID code, he is probably selling a counterfeit (Author's Expertise).

3. Ask the dealer for the warranty card. A new Bulova is suspect without a warranty (Author's Expertise).

4. Inspect the dial using the jeweler's loupe or magnifying glass. Compare the dial with the catalog. The "Bulova" font should be identical to the catalog. Perform the same inspection for Bulova's "Accutron" models. The fonts should be clean, crisp, clear and perfectly spaced. Counterfeits probably will not have the name embossed or raised from the dial. The name will look like it was set with a sticky. It's common to see the Bulova name misspelled (Author's Expertise).

5. Inspect the hands to ensure they belong to the watch dial. Incorrect seconds hands will either not reach the seconds hash marks or extend beyond them (Author's Expertise).

6. Inspect the case back with the jeweler's loupe. Most Bulovas have the name etched on the back. The etching should be clear with the letters evenly spaced. Run your thumb over the etching. It's a counterfeit if it's rough to the touch. Check for spelling and even lettering (See Reference 1 and Author's Expertise).

Vintage Models

7. Purchase and vintage watch buyer's guide. Visit the numerous websites devoted to vintage Bulova watches. Research its history and styles over the decades. The problem with vintage Bulovas is that many models are cobbled from different watches to make one timepiece. These watches are not historically correct and are worthless (Author's Expertise).

8. Use a thin case blade to pry open the snap case back of a Bulova. Use a rubber jar opener to rotate a screw down case back counterclockwise until it opens (See Reference 2 and Author's Expertise).

9. Use a magnifying glass to examine the movement, which is the spring-loaded engine that runs the watch. Bulovas produced between 1924 and 1945 used symbols to denote the year of manufacture. A triangle identifies a 1945 model. However, if you find a triangle movement inside a watch with 1920s Squelette hands, it's a fake (See References 3-4 and Author's Expertise).

Gas Station Marketing Strategies

Gas stations can use innovative marketing techniques to gain local market share.

The gasoline fueling station industry is fairly homogenous across the board: Prices, amenities, products and even architecture are quite similar for a majority of gas stations in the country. Because of this, gas station owners must look to creative marketing strategies to bring new customers in the door and turn first-time visitors into repeat purchasers.

Price Competition

Gas station customers may view fuel stations as virtually undifferentiated. Customers often select which gas station to patronize based on current fuel prices, rather than acting loyal to a single station. To catch these price-conscious customers, stay on the leading edge of gas prices in your area. Watch competitors' prices carefully, and always match or slightly beat the lowest price.

Loyalty Programs

Gas station customers often purchase the same items on a regular basis. Instituting loyalty programs for items such as coffee, hot dogs and fuel spending can give your customers an incentive to visit your station more often, even going slightly out of their way to buy from you and receive one more point toward their reward.

Contest Promotions

Offer valuable prizes for temporary contests and promotions, and advertise the promotion and the prize on your premises. Make the prize something that will encourage word-of-mouth advertising --- think free gas for a year or free coffee for life. Utilize radio promotions to push these contests and boost short-term sales volume considerably.

Partnerships

Establish a partnership with a local or regional grocery store chain to mimic large-scale grocery outlets' gas station components. Customers are becoming accustomed to earning discounts at gas stations tied in with specific grocery stores; forming a local partnership can help you ride the wave of this trend. Offering discounts to patrons of another local establishment can help you to increase both your sales volume and customer satisfaction.

Amenities

Use your unique product-and-service mix to fuel word-of-mouth advertising and garner customer loyalty. Include a fast-food component to widen your target market. Consider reviving full-service fueling for one or two pumps. Sell lottery tickets, alcohol, supplies for roadtrips and any other items that customers have come to expect at convenience stores.

Get My Sprinting Speed Faster

In a race, just a few tenths of a second can make a huge difference.

In most sports, athletes have to start from a stationary position and reach maximum speed quickly. As a result, acceleration and sprinting speed are vital to athletic performance. Whether you are planning to compete as a sprinter or in another sport, increasing your sprinting speed will improve your performance.

Instructions

1. Develop strength through bodyweight calisthenics and weight training. By increasing strength in relation to bodyweight, you will be able to sprint faster.

2. Lose excess body fat. Carrying excess body fat increases the amount of force required to move an athlete's body and therefore has a negative effect on speed.

3. Develop flexibility and mobility through the hip and knee joints. By loosening the muscles of the lower body you will be fighting less friction as you sprint.

4. Perform plyometric training to develop explosiveness in the muscles. Plyometric training should include box jumps, depth jumps, tuck jumps and squat jumps.

5. Perform sprint loading drills such as hill sprints, stadium stairs and weighted sleds.

Fast Giraffe Facts

No two individual giraffes have the same pattern of patches.

Giraffes are the tallest members of the animal kingdom with adults ranging from 13 to 18 feet tall. They can be found in patches throughout Africa in open terrains such as savannas and in woodlands. Their taxonomic species name--camelopardalis--is a vestige of an ancient time when people believed giraffes were a cross between a camel and a leopard.

Physical Characteristics

Length is the giraffe's most distinctive quality. In addition to its height, the tail of a giraffe is approximately 8 feet long, longer than that of any other animal. The tongue is between 18 and 20 inches long. Giraffes also have the largest eyes of any terrestrial animal and long eyelashes to protect the eyes from insects and thorns.

Its hooves are about the size of a dinner plate according to the San Diego Zoo. Giraffes also have two hair-covered horns on their skulls known as ossicones.

The coats of giraffes feature large brown to black patches divided by a white outline. As is the case with fingerprints in humans, no two individuals have the same pattern of patches.

Diet

Adult giraffes consume between 75 and 140 lbs of foliage a day. Giraffes have a predilection for the leaves and buds of acacia trees. Though these trees have thorns, giraffes use their long tongues to circumvent them. Their thick saliva coats any thorns they may unintentionally swallow. They will swallow vegetation and later regurgitate it as cud--semi-digested food--which they continue to chew.

The leaves giraffes eat have a high water content, which keeps them hydrated. When giraffes drink water from lakes or streams they must spread their legs and bend over forward, a stance that makes them vulnerable to attacks by predators such as lions and crocodiles.

Behavior and Lifestyle

Giraffes sleep about 30 minutes a day for five to six minutes at a time and in the wild its average lifespan is between 15 and 20 years. Female giraffes come together to form loosely-bound herds of about 10 to 12 individuals, while adult male giraffes tend to be solitary, according to the Smithsonian National Zoological Park. Male giraffes will sometimes fight playfully amongst themselves, but these altercations are rarely fatal.

Reproduction and Development

Giraffes reach sexual maturity when they are between 3 and 4 years old. Their gestation period is about 15 months. A calf weighs approximately 150 lbs at birth and can be up to 6 feet tall. Giraffes give birth standing up. As a result, the calf plunges to the ground when it emerges. According to the San Diego Zoo, calves are usually able to walk about an hour after birth and can begin eating leaves at 4 months old.

Conservation Status

Habitat destruction poses the biggest threat to giraffes. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) considers the giraffe a species of "lower risk" because the population is still widespread even though it is extinct in portions of its former range. In a 2008 assessment, the IUCN estimated there were approximately 100,000 individuals in the wild, though the organization believed that number was decreasing.

Zamboni Work

Although the Zamboni is the original ice resurfacer machine, all ice resurfacers work in pretty much the same way. Most of the action in a Zamboni takes place at the very back in a machine called the conditioner. First, a scraper blade shaves off the top layer of ice. An auger scoops up those ice shavings and dumps them into the dump tank. This process scrapes away the very rough top layer of the ice and also gets rid of some of the dirt that can get into a rink.

Behind the blade is the washer, which cleans the ice. It sprays water on the rink, digging dirt out of the grooves in the ice. A vacuum picks up the water again. A rubber flap at the back and two runners to the sides stop the water from spilling out before it can be vacuumed back up. The dirt is filtered out of the water, so it can be used to wash the ice again.

Behind the washer is a flat towel, spread on the ice. This towel is coated with hot water. This water melts and evens out any bumps left in the ice and then refreezes, leaving a smooth layer of ice behind. Because all of the work takes place in one small assembly, an ice resurfacer is quite dramatic to watch. It drives over rough, scraped up ice and leaves a smooth, flawless surface behind.

Breathe Correctly

Many people do not breathe correctly. As easy as it seems, it is a true fact. Breathing effects our minds, our bodies and our souls. It can be what keeps us from getting depressed, or what keeps us happy on a daily basis. People try breathing techniques in yoga classes and it helps them leave with peace of mind. Learn breathe correctly for your body.

Instructions

1. Start your breathing technique by standing up straight or lying down on your back on a soft cushion or bed. Make sure you are comfortable and able to relax. Do this exercise away from distractions such as the phone or television.

2. Put your hand on your stomach and leave it there. Breathe as you always do and see whether your chest falls and rises or if your stomach if rising and falling.

3. Notice if your stomach is rising and your chest is staying still when breathing in. If it is, then you are breathing correctly. When the chest rises, it is incorrect.

4. Practice breathing in and out and keep your hand on your stomach. Take a deep breath and count to five. Then exhale and see as your stomach drops and your chest stays still.

5. Keep doing these exercises so that you can learn to breathe this way all the time. This type of breathing will eventually become natural for you, and you will feel less stress, less tension and more happiness in your daily life.

Foods That Give You Strength

In addition to lifting weights, eating the right food is vital for gaining strength.

If you're looking to gain strength, you probably wish that simply consuming a single can of spinach, like Popeye, is enough for a sudden increase in muscle...but in reality that is far from the case. Along with getting plenty of exercise, it's vital to eat a balanced diet that contains a wide variety of foods with protein, vitamins and minerals. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Eggs

Eggs are high in protein and are a very effective type of food to build muscles. The best parts of the eggs for gaining strength are the whites, as they are pure protein. While the yolk also has an element of protein, it also contains fat and cholesterol. If you're going to eat a lot of eggs, it's better to mainly eat the whites, though eating the odd yolk is fine.

Fish

All types of fish are an excellent source of food to gain strength. Not only do they contain high amounts of protein, but there's very little in the way of carbohydrates and fatty acids. All fish has lots of protein, but cold water species like salmon, tuna, trout and sardines are the best for strength as they also have a high omega 3 content, a staple of any bodybuilder's diet.

Lean Red Meat

Lean red meat, such as beef, venison and buffalo, contains an extremely high amount of protein and is synonymous with strength and muscle. However, it does contain a larger quantity of cholesterol than other bodybuilding foods, so it should be consumed in moderation as part of a healthy and balanced diet.

Vegetables

A good mix of vegetables is vital to a balanced diet, but they're also very beneficial when it comes to gaining strength. Dark green vegetables such as broccoli and spinach are high in protein, though you should also eat plenty of other types to get a full range of calcium, folic acid, vitamins and minerals, as protein by itself isn't sufficient to become stronger.

Chicken and Turkey

Both chicken and turkey are low in fat but high in good quality protein. White meat is generally popular and is as good of an option as anything else. Chicken and turkey contain an excellent amount of protein and are also rich in B vitamins, selenium and phosphorus...and they're usually less expensive than red meat or fish.

Florida Liquor License Regulations

Businesses that sell liquor in Florida are controlled by a strict licensing program.

Selling liquor has always been a profitable business venture. Governments control the establishments that are allowed to sell liquor by issuing, and in some cases suspending or revoking, special licenses that grant an establishment permission to sell alcohol. In the state of Florida, these licenses fall under the jurisdiction of the state’s Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco Council, which is a division of the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. This department sets forth the rules that one must follow in order to receive and maintain a liquor license in Florida.

Number of Licenses

Establishments that limit their products to beer and wine enjoy the easiest process for obtaining a Florida liquor license. The state does not limit the number of businesses that are allowed to sell beer and wine. The greater restriction is placed on those who wish to sell hard liquor as well. The numbers of businesses that are allowed to sell hard liquor are strictly controlled by the Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco. These licenses are referred to as Quota licenses, and the demand for this type of license dwarfs the number of licenses available. Because of this, new licenses are awarded in an annual lottery, with the licenses being distributed across the counties in the state. The number of licenses issued in the lottery changes from year to year, and is based on the amount of population increase.

Restaurant Licenses

Restaurants can obtain special liquor licenses for the consumption of alcoholic beverages, as opposed to selling the liquor as a carryout item. Restaurants may obtain one of these special alcoholic beverage licenses (SRX) as long as certain rules are followed. The liquor must only be sold for consumption on the premises. Also, alcohol can not constitute the majority of the business done in the establishment. A minimum of 51 percent of revenues must come from the sale of food and non-alcoholic beverages. This rule is in place to prevent bars from being able to obtain a SRX license just by offering minor food items.

Liquor License Costs

Liquor licenses must be renewed annually. The cost of a Florida liquor license varies, according to a couple of distinct factors. The amount will vary from $28 to $1,820 per year, as of July 2010, depending on what county your establishment is located in and what type of license you hold.

In the case of a Quota license for the sale of hard liquor, there is, as of July 2010, a one-time fee of $10,750 that is paid at the time the license is issued. The proceeds of these fees are used to fund alcohol treatment and prevention programs within the state. If the license is being purchased from an existing establishment, then a license transfer fee of up to $5,000 must be paid, again, with the funds going toward treatment and prevention programs.

Fun Running Activities For Kids

Getting kids off the couch and moving is important for their physical growth.

Even at a young age it's important to keep kids active to reduce the risk of obesity in childhood and later on in life. Creating fun running activities for them to participate in can be just the thing to get them moving on a regular basis. With the right activities, you can not only get kids moving and burning energy, but you can also help them learn to spell or get to know one another.

Tag

Kids love playing tag, and the game provides a good and usually safe outlet for their energy. You can play a standard game of tag, where one person is "it" and has to tag someone else, who then becomes "it." You can also incorporate some variations, such as "blob tag," where two people link arms and try to tag someone. Once someone is tagged, they have to join the blob, which gets bigger and bigger.

Relays

Break up the kids into teams and have them run relay races to ignite their competitive spirit. The kids run a lap on a track and then tag their teammate, who then completes another lap. The first team to have all of its players finish a lap is the winner. Or, you can place a bunch of balls in a gymnasium in one bag and put another bag at the other end of the gym for each team. The first person takes a ball, runs it to the bag at the other end of the gym and races back to tag his teammate, who continues the relay race.

Learning Game

You can incorporate learning into running activities. Get a bunch of clothespins, index cards and markers as well as a clipboard for each child. Give the children five index cards apiece and give them five words to write on the cards, one per card, and attach the cards to their clipboards with the clothespins. Make sure they all have the same words. Put the clipboards some distance away and have the kids line up an arm's length from each other. Call off a word and have the kids run to their clipboards to find it and then run back to the starting line. Keep doing this until they've found all the words.

Egg Hunt

You can create an egg hunt that will keep kids running and solving problems. Hide math problems or spelling words in a plastic egg and have the kids find them and then run to a writing station to solve before running off to find more. Consider giving prizes to the kids for finding the eggs and solving problems.

Fastest Way To Lose Weight On A Treadmill

Exercise at home with your treadmill.

If you have a special occasion coming up or any other reason for wanting to lose weight quickly, so that you can look your best, it can be done by changing your diet and participating in daily exercise at home on your treadmill. According to Dr. Michael Dansinger, who works with contestants on NBC's "The Biggest Loser," it is possible to lose a significant amount of weight in a relatively short period of time by following a strict plan consisting of at least seven hours of rigorous exercise per week.

Instructions

1. Alter your diet before beginning a treadmill workout regimen. In order to lose weight, you must consume fewer calories than you burn; cutting back your caloric intake by 500 calories per day is generally enough to yield a 1-2 lb. weight loss per week. Reducing your calories even further, by consuming only 1,050 to 1,200 per day, will produce a faster rate of weight loss at first, but reducing your intake too drastically with a starvation diet will lower your body's metabolic rate and actually make it harder to lose weight after your body adjusts to the lower calorie intake.

2. Begin each day's workout by warming up with stretches, then doing a slow-paced walk for 3-5 minutes. This will help to prepare your muscles and heart for exercise and lower your chances of getting hurt during the workout.

3. Alternate the main portion of your workout between power walking and running, and periodically change the incline if your treadmill offers that option. It's important to raise your heart rate and keep it up during your workout for maximum weight loss; there are many target heart rate calculators available online which use factors such as your age and resting heart rate to help you determine your ideal beats-per-minute range.

4. Work your upper body with hand weights while walking on the treadmill. This will help strengthen your arms, shoulders and upper back. The more muscle mass your body has, the more calories it will burn, so it is always a good idea to work on muscle building in addition to your cardio exercise.

5. Exercise on your treadmill at least one hour per day, but don't push yourself so hard that you experience a great deal of pain while working out. You may have to start out slowly until your body builds up endurance, and then increase the intensity of your workouts as you begin to feel more comfortable.

Government Regulations For Starting A Gas Station

Opening a gas station mandates meeting government regulations.

Gas station operation appears relatively straightforward, but owners face a variety of government regulations. Depending on the geographic location of the station and the services offered, government laws and codes regulate a number of services, construction, storage and delivery of the gasoline product. Regulations also control posting gas prices. When stations add related services including food sales, the number of regulations and code requirements increase even further.

Tax Regulations

States require gas stations to account for mandatory taxes collected at the pump. States assess a gas tax based on either a percentage of the sales price or a set fee based on each gallon sold. The tax per gallon ranges from $.70 in Connecticut and $.69.1 in New York to the lower tax range of $.26.4 in Alaska, according to prices collected by the American Petroleum Institute in May 2011.

Environmental Regulations

Environmental regulations for gas station operators varies with the state regulations. Some states, including California, require pumps to incorporate a capture system on pump nozzles to collect fumes, while other states have few environmental requirements on stations or the method of gasoline service or storage. States with strict environmental standards for underground gasoline storage tanks, such as California and Florida, regulate tanks and mandate inspection of the underground storage and require replacement when major leaks occur (see Resources).

Product Labeling

Gasoline products use labels to designate the grade offered to the consumer. Grades include premium or "super" to regular or "unleaded," with some stations also offering middle grades labeled variously as "mid-grade" or "medium." Each designation describes the level of octane in the product, an alkane series hydrocarbon present in all gasoline. The higher the octane, the greater protection against engine knocking. While the owner determines the range of octane levels offered at the station, the pump octane labeling must match the gasoline product delivered to the consumer. State laws, including those in Massachusetts, also require the posted prices match the price paid at the gas station pump.

Business License

Operators of gasoline stations must hold a business license and federal and state tax identification numbers. In addition to taxes on fuel, the business must collect taxes on repair services, in some states, and on any goods sold at the station, including food and convenience store items. Gasoline stations selling food prepared on the premises must meet county restaurant codes and regulations for health and safety and post public inspection signs listing an overall rating in meeting codes in some areas, including Los Angeles. Stations offering vehicle smog checks mandated by state law must also hold licenses to certify catalytic converters reducing toxic gas released during car operations.

Motor Fuels License

Gas station owners must also have regular business licenses and also a motor fuels retail outlet license to do sell gasoline. The license mandates payment of a fee and also requires renewal each year. The application requirements, in states including Michigan, also include the owners name, address, type of business holding and the number of motor fuel grades offered at the retail location.

Homemade Party Table Decorations

Paper cutouts can add theme-appropriate interest to your party table.

A party doesn't have to be an expensive affair, especially if you create decorative items out of inexpensive craft items. Certain items such as paper and stickers can go a long way in creating a festive mood. Does this Spark an idea?

Tablecloth

Drape any plain tablecloth over the table. To add some interest, cut out shapes such as hearts and flowers from crêpe paper or construction paper and paste them on a piece of cheesecloth. Spread the cheesecloth over the tablecloth. Instead of paper cutouts, you can also use stickers.

Centerpiece

For the centerpiece, use a large glass votive candle holder. Place a candle in the holder and glue items such as dried flowers, random puzzle pieces and beads onto the glass.

Snack Bowls

Prepare snack bowls that match the party theme using empty margarine tubs and paper. For example, you can paste paper cutouts in the shape of hearts on the tubs for a Valentine's day party, pumpkins and black cats for a Halloween party or mistletoe for a Christmas party. Fill several snack bowls with colorful candies or chocolates and place them on the table for functional decorative items.

Gifts For A Marine

Anyone who knows or has even been in the presence of a Marine understands how important the history and tradition of the Marine Corps is to them, so when choosing a gift, keep this in mind. Marine Corps memorabilia is extremely popular even among those who aren't in the Marine Corps, so finding USMC gear is not a problem. However, putting a little extra thought in your gift will make all the difference to your Marine.

Perfect gifts

When looking for a gift for a Marine, it is important to take into consideration the rich history of the Marine Corps. Marines have a deep appreciation and respect for the tradition and history, and the best gifts include those that will remind them of the heroism and bravery of the Marines. Books and literature based on the Marine Corp are always popular. Even a subscription to a Marine Corps magazine will be appreciated and keep them up to date on the latest news regarding the Corps while commemorating historic moments and focusing on anniversaries.

Be careful when buying war movies for a Marine because they will more likely spend most of the time pointing out all the mistakes in the film.

Most Marines also would love a KaBar knife. This knife was originally issued to Marines during World War II and rose to incredible popularity. It maintains that same popularity today. Staff non-commissioned officer senior non-commissioned officer swords are perhaps the most meaningful gifts a Marine could receive. These swords are the oldest weapons that are still used today in the service. They are extremely popular among Marines, especially when retiring. These swords are beautifully crafted and proudly displayed among active and ex-Marines. Simple trinkets are appreciated too, such as beer steins with the USMC emblem on them, or even Marine Corps apparel.

Ex Marine

It is always important to show your ex-Marine how much you appreciate everything he has done for his country. Some of the best gifts for a former member of the Marine Corps would be something that can display the honors he gained while in the service. A shadow box, which is basically a recessed picture frame, is a great way to display and house Marines Corps ribbons as well as medals that he received while on active duty. Plaques commemorating the time and effort of a Marine are also appreciated.

Benefit From Running

People run for many different reasons. Some run to lose weight, others run to relieve stress and many others run to improve their overall health. Whatever the reason, running has many proven benefits. Learn to run more efficiently and maximize the benefits of your runs.

Instructions

1. Stay adequately hydrated. You experience more benefits from running if you remain hydrated. You (and your muscles) will fatigue faster if you are dehydrated. Drink plenty of fluids before, during and after running. This is especially important during longer runs and on hot days.

2. Run gently. The louder your foot sounds when it hits the ground, the less efficient you're running. Use a mid-foot landing to shorten your stride and soften your blow to the ground. Relax your body while you run. Clenched fists and tense facial expresses reduce your running efficiency.

3. Breathe correctly. Breathing correctly prevents premature fatigue and helps you benefit from your workout. Breathe rhythmically and deeply. Try to feel your diaphragm doing the work. Use control when you exhale and monitor your breathing so it is not too shallow.

4. Stand tall. Running "small," wastes energy. Pull your head and shoulders up and back to run with the most efficient form. Strengthen your core muscles to improve your running posture and fully benefit from your runs.

5. Stretch after you finish running. Stretching helps you get rid of the lactic acid your body creates during your run. Excess lactic acid leaves you feeling sore. Gently stretch your calves, quadriceps and hamstrings and feel great when you are finished.

Gate Art Entrance Ideas

Use stencils to create your gate entrance artwork.

A nicely decorated front gate provides guests to your home with a welcome and a first glimpse into your aesthetic style. The possibilities for art on your gate's entrance runs the gamut from traditional pieces of art to art elements that you apply directly to the gate itself. Does this Spark an idea?

Considerations

As in general decorating, your gate art should reflect the decorative style that you're featuring in the rest of the yard. This means that you not only should select colors that complement the house and any other structures in the yard but also the materials. For example, if the decorative elements of your yard are all made from distressed wood, repeat this on the gate's entrance. The repetition of elements provides visual continuity, which is one of the most important elements of decorating and design.

Outdoor Art

Art has moved from inside the house to the outdoors. Nowadays, you can find outdoor art that's just as beautiful as artwork intended for your living room wall but is made to survive all kinds of weather. The best bet for this type of art for your gate is the kind that requires you to screw the art onto the gate; it won't be affected by the opening and closing of the gate. You can find outdoor art made from a variety of materials, from wrought iron to canvas. Choose an outdoor visual motif for your gate's entrance such as butterflies, dragonflies, sun and moon combinations or floral elements.

Stencils

Stencils are a favorite decorative element for many home craft enthusiasts. It's an inexpensive method for decorating surfaces inside and outside your home and would work well on a wooden gate entrance. To create stencil art on your gate, look for stencil patterns that match any decorative motif you'd like to highlight in your front yard. For example, if you've done your front yard in Americana and have items such as American flags and red, white and blue decorative elements, choose stencils that fit with this theme.

Flower Baskets

Flowers are a staple in outdoor decoration. If you have bushes of flowers that flank your front gate, extend this motif to the gate itself. One simple way to do this is to attach a decorative basket to the front gate with screws. Make sure that the basket has holes in the bottom for the water to drain if you plan on growing flowers in the basket. Wooden baskets with a decorative motif such as carving or beveling add an artistic element to your front gate floral display. Certain gardening techniques such as bonzai will enhance the artistic elements as well.

Hot Tub Troubleshooting

A hot tub is a nice addition to a home. It is perfect for entertaining guests or for relaxing at the end of a tiresome day. If you have become spoiled by having a hot tub to enjoy whenever you like, then you probably will be disappointed and maybe even a little frustrated when the hot tub is not working. Knowing some hot tub troubleshooting tips can get you back in your tub a lot sooner. Does this Spark an idea?

Water Gets Too Hot

If the water in your hot tub gets too hot, you need to examine the heater contractor and the thermostat. The heater contractor may have become welded shut. This happens when the water in the spa gets too low, when you have an old or clogged filter or when the pressure switch is out of adjustment.

Make sure the thermostat is turned up all the way. Check the temperature of the water with a separate thermometer. If the thermostat is not working, it will have to be replaced. The water also will overheat if you leave the jet pump on for a long time.

Water Will Not Heat

If the water in your hot tub will not heat over 99 degrees, run the hot tub without the filter for a couple of days, then test the temperature again. If the temperature has risen, then replace the filter. If the temperature did not rise, then replace the thermostat. Never try to calibrate the thermostat. It is safer to replace a thermostat than to take a chance on seriously injuring someone.

Nothing On The Hot Tub Works

If your hot tub is not working at all, turn off the main circuit breaker that supplies the power, and check the fuses with an Ohmmeter. If the fuses are fine, turn the power back on and check that you have the correct line voltage (110 or 220) in the hot tub control panel at the terminal strip. If you do have the correct line voltage, then test the GFCI by pressing the test or reset button. If it does not pop out, then you have a malfunctioning GFCI and will need to replace it.

The Spa Has A Leak

If your hot tub has a leak, turn off the power to the spa and examine the equipment. If the leak is around the pump, you could have a pump seal failure. Check the union fittings of the heater and spa pump. They might have vibrated loose and can be tightened by hand. Check the pressure switch and heater and inspect the valves. Examine all jets, pipes and connections for leaking.

Fun Facts About Disney'S Hollywood Studios

Originally opened on May 1, 1989, Disney-MGM Studios changed its name to Disney's Hollywood Studios in January 2008 as part of a contract dispute with MGM. Dedicated to the entertainment industry, Hollywood Studios is one of four theme parks in the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. With behind-the-scenes views of Hollywood, the theme park features backstage tours, live shows and attractions such as "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" Movie Set Adventure, Star Wars: Jedi Training Academy and Journey Into Narnia: Prince Caspian.

Original Plans

Have fun comparing the dream with the reality when you see Walt Disney's original, hand-drawn plans for his resort which are on display in the One Man's Dream attraction. The multimedia attraction was created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Walt Disney's birth in 1901. Other features of the attraction include Walt Disney's second-grade school desk, Special Academy Award statues for ''Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'' and models of Disneyland Resort's Main Street, U.S.A.

The Earffel Tower

The Earffel Tower, a water tower featuring giant Mickey Mouse ears, is a tribute to the water towers commonly distributed on Hollywood studio back lots during the early 1900s as a preventative measure against set fires. A Disney Hollywood Studios' landmark, the Earffel Tower is 13 stories tall, has ears that weigh 2.5 tons and would wear a hat size of 342 ¾. In 2001, the Earffel Tower was replaced by the Sorcerer's Hat as the icon of Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Height of Fright

Wander through the Hollywood Tower Hotel lobby, library and boiler room before entering the seemingly harmless elevator in the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction. As the elevator gradually rises 13 stories, guests encounter a series of scary and supernatural events. After reaching the top, the doors briefly open before the elevator rapidly descends towards the ground in a random series of starts and stops. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is the highest attraction at Walt Disney World Resort. Other tall Disney World attractions include the Cinderella Castle in Magic Kingdom at 185 feet, Spaceship Earth in Epcot at 180 feet and the Tree of Life in Animal Kingdom at 145 feet.

Hidden Mickeys

Hidden Mickeys are subtle images or outlines of Mickey Mouse's ears and face that are scattered throughout the Disney theme parks. Hidden Mickeys in Disney Hollywood Studios include one at the Sunset Theatre and one at the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. At Sunset Theatre, find the location where Mickey Mouse is available to pose for photos with guests and then look carefully at the doors behind Mickey's position. When the door is closed, the door handles create a Hidden Mickey. The one in the Tower of Terror is a little more difficult to spot. There are two doors with several square windows in them as your first enter the lobby of the Tower of Terror. On the left door, the one closest to the stand-by line, look at the second row of windows from the top. In that row, examine the window that is the farthest to the right to see a very tiny Mickey in the center of the window.

Fun Food Facts

According to DiningInDisney.com, the 50's Prime Time Cafe serves at least 125 orders of meat loaf and mashed potatoes and Mama Melrose's Ristorante Italiano serves 720 pounds of pasta every day. The Hollywood Brown Derby tosses 31,000 Cobb salads every year.
