Begin A Runner'S Training Schedule

If you have never run before, or if you have just started running, this step-by-step guide can help you start running.

Instructions

1. Set a goal. Choose how far you want to be able to run, and how long it should take. A realistic goal for a beginner would be to run at least two miles in under 20 minutes.

2. Start slow. A lot of beginners make the mistake of running too fast or too hard, and stop running within a week because they are overtraining. The best way starting workout is to run for ¼ mile, then walk quickly for 20 more minutes.

3. Add mileage. The first week you should be running ¼ mile three times a week, and then add ¼ mile the second week for a total of ½ mile per workout. Add ¼ mile the third week for a total of ¾ mile per workout.

4. Take a step back week. Every three to four weeks, you should give your body a chance to rest. You can drop to ½ or to ¼ mile for this week.

5. Keep adding mileage and/or days. Add mileage each week, or days each week, until you are running the distance in your goal.

Home Remedies For A Baby With Diarrhea

It can be both frustrating and frightening when your baby develops diarrhea. Babies can develop diarrhea quickly and without any cause that parents can find. It is very important that a baby with diarrhea be treated immediately to prevent dehydration and further health issues.

Dehydration

One home remedy that has been recommended for generations to treat diarrhea in very young children is jello water. Jello water works because the gelatin helps to bind the stool and stop the diarrhea. It also helps rehydrate the child. To make jello water, dissolve your child's favorite flavor of gelatin according to the package instructions and then dilute it with 2 cups (or more) of water. Pour this mixture into your child's bottle or sippy cup and allow them to drink this throughout the day. Keep in mind, however, that the artificial coloring in the gelatin may color your child's stools, so you may want to choose a flavor that is not red.

You can also make your own rehydration solution similar to Pedialyte. Mix together 1/3 cup lemon-lime or other clear soda, 1/3 cup water, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon baking powder. The salt and the baking powder will help to replace sodium and other electrolytes lost due to diarrhea.

Both of these liquids can be frozen and served as homemade popsicles as well. Pour the liquid into paper cups and place in the freezer. After about half an hour when the liquid starts to form ice and the sticks will stand upright, place popsicle sticks or plastic spoons in each cup to serve as handles. Freeze solid and serve.

BRAT

You need to continue to feed your child regularly throughout the time he or she has diarrhea. The BRAT diet is recommended by health care professionals for children with diarrhea. BRAT stands for bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. These foods are easy to digest and help to re-establish normal digestion.

Bananas can be served whole, sliced or mashed depending on your child's age. Rice should be white rice, boiled until soft and served without salt or butter. Unsweetened applesauce is best: sugar may aggravate your child's diarrhea. For toast, use white bread--high fiber whole grains may further upset the digestive system--and serve without butter or jelly.

Fitnessindustry Analysis

Fitness-Industry Analysis

With the recession still plodding along and with many people unemployed, how has this poor economy affected the current trends of the fitness industry? Not surprisingly, fitness programs and services that are economical and easier to access dominate consumers' choices, according to a recent survey by the American Council of Exercise (ACE). The following trends are considered the top options by ACE and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

Boot Camps

This style of training blends cardiovascular training and strength training, using the body's own weight and simple exercise tools, such as kettlebells, tubings, and cones. People find that boot camps are very affordable, and they tend to stick with the program longer because of the group support that is provided. Since many people are still on a budget, boot camps will most likely continue to prosper and be consumers' first choice in fitness programs in 2010.

Investment: $10-to-$20 per person per class.

Children and Obesity

For the first time in history, children of this generation may not live as long as their parents or grandparents because of the diseases and impairments associated with childhood obesity. With the cutbacks in physical education in schools and an increase in sedentary lifestyle (TV, video games, computers), there is a need for fitness professionals to provide their services to this population to help fight the obesity epidemic. Programs aimed to help increase physical activity, such as team sports (baseball, soccer, hockey), dance, and urban sports (skateboarding, parkour) are expected to increase well into 2010.

Functional Training

In the past ten years, functional training is becoming the preferred method of training among personal trainers and sports professionals. The philosophy of functional training is to use the entire body to move in various ways (example: front, side, rotation), speeds, and modalities---rather than isolating muscles and movement patterns as in many gym machines and other exercises (bicep curl, leg extension, etc.). This method can be carried over to real-life skills and movement, such as lifting a child or walking up the stairs while carrying groceries, and can be trained with very simple tools (tubing, rope, broomstick, wall, etc.) or just the body weight.

Functional training has limitless possibilities, is time saving, and increases the fun factor of any workout.

Kettlebell Training

Originally used in Russia for strength-conditioning, kettlebell (KB) training has increased in popularity in the past five years in the U.S. KB training works the entire body---which can be a method of functional training---and it is very popular among professional athletes, especially the mixed martial artists. The trend for KB training will continue to increase in 2010 as more people are aware of its benefits, and as more gyms are providing these tools.

Older-Adult Exercise

As the number of older Americans is growing, so does the need for special fitness programs for this population. This population consists of those who are frail and need higher degrees of strength, balance, and flexibility to do daily activities, and those who are physically fit beyond their age group, like Chuck Norris, at 69, and Jack LaLanne, at 95. Activities and programs that attract this population include ballroom dancing, walking/hiking, cycling, tai chi, and chair exercises.

Qualified Professionals

Unlike most professionals, like nurses, massage therapists, and auto mechanics, personal training does not require anyone to have any type of formal education and training. Therefore, a personal trainer can have a master's degree in exercise physiology or a weekend online certification for $99 with no experience in working with people. However, in the 2000s, there has been a large increase of fitness professionals with higher education and experience, according to a survey by the American College of Sports Medicine. This trend will continue to grow as more education and certification programs are offered by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and more demands for specialized fitness professionals.

Fetal Effects Of Exercise During Pregnancy

When it comes to exercise during pregnancy, the guidelines change. In general, pregnant women should stick to lower intensity workouts. Also, what may be safe in the first trimester may not be safe in the second or third. Appropriate exercise is recommended, but pregnant women should seek help from their obstetrician or an exercise instructor with experience in teaching pre-natal exercises.

Effects of Exercise on the Mother

Heather Coleman-Ibrahim, a certified personal trainer with a specialization in prenatal exercise, says that light to moderate exercise is good for pregnant women. She recommends that on an intensity scale of 1 to 10, 10 being very intense exercise, that pregnant women go no higher than a 4 or 5 during exercise (more on specific exercise instructions in the Recommended Exercise section below).

If proper guidelines are followed, Coleman-Ibrahim says that women who exercise will better be able to manage stress and keep a controlled weight gain during pregnancy versus excessive gain. Typically speaking, women should expect to gain between 25 and 35 pounds, unless their doctor says otherwise. Exercise will also help with blood pressure, maintaining good cardiovascular health, and reducing ankle swelling.

Other benefits of exercise include more energy, improved posture, improved circulation, less back pain, better self-esteem, more energy, and less varicose veins and hemorrhoids.

Effects of Exercise on the Fetus

Women who exercise have a lower chance of developing diabetes, gestational diabetes or high blood pressure, which can indirectly affect the fetus, says Coleman-Ibrahim. Babies born to women who exercise are less likely to develop birth defects and usually develop at a healthier weight.

Recommended Exercises

"Most exercises are ok but they need to be tailored," says Coleman-Ibrahim. For example, most exercises performed in a prone or supine position (face down or face up) are not advised. However, modifications can be made and there are always exceptions. Coleman-Ibrahim recommends abdominal stabilization exercises like modified planks over core exercises the involved spinal flexion, such as crunches. She also will have pregnant clients do incline chest presses or seated cable chest presses instead of lying flat on a bench to do a standard dumbbell chest press.

Coleman-Ibrahim advises that simple exercise like walking, hiking, and swimming can be done without much guidance, but that women should seek help from a personal trainer or instructor with pre-natal training for pilates, yoga or weight training.

"Work on maintaining somewhat what you've already created for yourself," Coleman-Ibrahim suggests, meaning that women should focus more on maintaining their level of fitness instead of trying to improve it, unless they were sedentary prior to pregnancy. For women that did not exercise before becoming pregnant, a light to moderate exercise program should be started.

Other good types of exercise include low-impact aerobics, stationary cycling, and stretching. Regular exercise of any kind is important and should be done daily if possible. A minimum of three days a week is necessary to be considered regular exercise. As far as weight training goes, pregnant women should focus on doing more repetitions at lower weights as part of a maintenance program.

Exercises to Avoid

Any sport or exercise that could injure a woman's stomach or cause her to fall should be avoided. Gymnastics, horseback riding, and downhill skiing are examples of activities to avoid. Scuba diving is also not recommended.

Coleman-Ibrahim personally does not think running is good after the first trimester, but has known women that have done so safely. "Some women who used to run marathons can still run 5-10Ks during pregnancy, but at a slower pace," she says. Generally, she recommends that women slow down whatever they're doing during pregnancy as the extra weight they are carrying around automatically makes any activity more intense.

Also not recommended are activities that involve jumping, jerky or bouncy movements, or exercises that call for a wide range of motion as a woman's changing balance and hormones can make these movements risky during pregnancy. Also, do not exercise in excessive heat or humidity.

Coleman-Ibrahim advises, "If something doesn't feel right just don't do it." During her pregnancy, she felt differently on different days. Some days she did jumping exercises and some days she didn't if it felt risky.

Birth Process

Coleman-Ibrahim says that the babies born of women that exercise consistently throughout their pregnancies will be at a healthier birth weight based on their length and their weight. Also, "The birth process tends to go a little easier."

Risks and Contraindications

If women experience any of the following they should stop exercising and contact their doctor: vaginal bleeding, dizziness, headaches, pain in the chest or calves, amniotic fluid leakage and preterm labor. A reduction in the fetus' movement is also a sign that a doctor should be consulted.

Exercise should also be avoided if any of the following occur of if the mother has one of these conditions: Heart disease, restrictive lung disease, incompetent cervix, ruptured membranes, placenta previa after 26 weeks of gestation, or pregnancy-induced hypertension.

Flat Foot Problems

Flat feet, medically known as pes planus, is a problem where the arches of the feet collapse. Some people are born with flat feet (congenital pes planus deformity) others develop flat feet later in life as their joints become more lax. Statistically, more people have flat or low arches than high arches. Flat feet can cause many different types of foot problems to occur, making support to the arches a necessity.

The Facts

Between 80 and 90 percent of infants born in North America have flat feet. Most of these infants present a flexible flat foot but a small percent have a rigid deformity. Most adolescent's feet will develop properly and not be flat when they reach adulthood but 20 percent of adults in North America will still have flat feet.

Identification

If you stand on pavement with wet feet and your entire foot from the toes to the heel makes an impression, you have flat feet. Even if you have a visible arch while sitting, if your arch collapses to make total contact with the ground upon weight-bearing, you have flat feet.

Effects

Flat feet can cause an array of problems like neuromas, plantar fascitis, ankle pains, knee pains, metatarsalgia and other painful foot problems. Runners often suffer from shin splints and sprains as a result of flat feet.

Solution

Flat feet can be supported by wearing arch supports, pre-fabricated inserts or custom foot orthotics. Any of these inserts will raise the arch and provide support and in many cases relieve foot problems associated with flat feet.

Misconception

Many people feel they can develop flat feet from wearing un-supportive shoes. Although ill-fitting shoes can cause foot problems, they will not alter the bone structure of the feet or forcibly cause a foot to become flat. Flat footedness is a deformity that is genetic and either develops over time or at birth.

Expert Insight

Foot orthotics can be prescribed by a physician to support flat feet and eliminate problems associated with flat feet. Over-the-counter or prefabricated inserts can also support flat feet and reduce foot problems. You do not need to obtain a prescription from a doctor to purchase prefabricated inserts.

Health Uses Of Castor Oil

Castor oil has a wide variety of uses.

Castor oil is not as popular now as it was around the 1950s, when its laxative properties were widely known and sometimes used as a punishment to badly behaved children. The vegetable oil is derived from the castor bean, which is the seed of the castor-oil plant, Ricinus communis, a plant that is found mostly in India, East Africa and around the Mediterranean region. Castor oil has a wide variety of uses -- chiefly medical, but also some industrial and as a lubricant.

Laxative or Purgative

Traditionally, the main use of castor oil has been as a laxative. It was used in this respect by Mussolini's fascist troops as an instrument of torture when force-fed to captives. The oil is made up of a number of fatty acids, chiefly ricinoleic acid with small amounts of oleic acid and linoleic acid and trace amounts of others. Taking a teaspoon of castor oil mixed with a juice first thing in the morning can be an effective cure for constipation, but if the problem persists after taking castor oil for three days, consult a doctor in case there is a more serious underlying cause.

Arthritis, Gout and Rheumatism

Castor oil easily penetrates the skin, and this property alongside its anti-inflammatory powers makes it an effective pain reliever for arthritis, gout or rheumatism. Rub it into the skin of the affected area for basic relief. For a stronger remedy, place a cotton pad that has been soaked in the oil on the affected area, cover it with plastic wrap and place a heat source such as a hot pad or hot water bottle on top for 45 minutes. The pad can be kept in a refrigerator in a sealed plastic bag and reused when needed.

Skin Problems

Because it is a strong antioxidant and has anti-fungal properties, castor oil has been successfully used to treat a number of skin problems. These include ringworm, acne, warts, athlete's foot, liver spots, as well as chronic itch and inflamed skin. For small areas, cover the area with an adhesive bandage that has been soaked in the oil and apply to the area, leaving it on overnight, covering with plastic if necessary. For larger areas, use a cotton pad in the same way as for arthritis and gout. These properties can also provide effective relief to sunburn and to skin abrasions.

Other Uses

A derivative of the oil, polyethoxylated castor oil, is added to a number of modern drugs and used therapeutically. It is added to Saperconazole and to Miconazole as an anti-fungal agent, to Paclitaxel in chemotherapy for cancer and to Nelfinavir mesylate as an HIV protease inhibitor. After organ transplants, it is used with a cyclosporine injection to reduce the activity of a patient's immune system. Castor oil induces cramping of the bowel, and this property can be used to induce labor in an overdue pregnancy. This should only be carried out under medical supervision, as there can be side effects such as vomiting and diarrhea.

Basketball Player Stay In Shape

Practice by Doing

When training to stay in shape for a sport, especially ones involving prolonged activity like basketball, one of the best ways to stay in shape is to simply participate in the activity itself. It might be possible for a shot putter, or javelin thrower to spend most of their time working out and still be successful: in games that combine refined control with athleticism, there's no substitute for practice. Not only does playing basketball regularly strengthen the muscles and increase endurance necessary for the game, but it also hones the skills and shot necessary to be successful. Staying in shape for basketball is more than a physical battle. Keeping shots accurate, and improving accuracy, dribbling, passing, etc. are all important forms of staying ready to play the game.

Hitting the Weights

Outside of practicing the game itself, basketball players do spend considerable amounts of time working out in other ways to increase their effectiveness on court. Weight training is an important part of being in shape for basketball: heavy lifting with the legs promotes greater leaping ability, which helps with jumping for rebounds, blocks, dunks and making jump shots. Core and arm strength are also important, as they allow a player to better box out other players, set picks and generally become a more physically imposing presence on the court, enabling them to overpower defenders. Lifting can also help increase balance and foot speed, enabling players to run the court faster.

Speed and Cardio Drills

Along with weight training, speed, agility and cardiovascular drills are an important component of staying in shape for basketball. There's no use being incredibly strong, if one cannot run back and forth quickly in order to keep up with the flow of the game, and capitalize on breakaways, or defend against them. Basketball players often run sprints, very commonly in the form of "killers," an exercise involving running back and forth several times up and down a basketball court at high speed while constantly changing direction. Wind sprints, repeated running of a short distance at high speed with 5-30 seconds of rest in between each sprint is also a common way to build speed, as well as endurance that emulates running up and down the court. Jumping rope is a good way to improve jumping endurance and strength. Drills involving hopping on one foot in different set patterns are also used to train agility, balance, and increase leg endurance. Running longer distances to improve overall endurance is also a common way to stay in good shape.

Adjust The Temperature On A Rheemglas

The Rheem company, formerly known as Rheemglas, produces heating and cooling equipment for the home. One of the company's products is a line of electrical hot water heaters that can be installed in your home to keep your water warm without using propane or natural gas. If the temperature of your water is not what you want it to be, you can adjust the temperature on your Rheemglas by using a thermostat. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Find the adjustable thermostat knob for your hot water heater. It will be near the bottom of the unit and will look like a standard dial. Ensure that all faucets and valves that are connected to the hot water heater are turned off before making the adjustment.

2. Press in on the thermostat knob to unlock the child-resistant control. You will hear a click to indicate that the controls are unlocked. Turn the dial to adjust the thermostat to a higher or lower setting than it is on. The temperature is not labeled on the scale, but the lowest setting is 60 degrees Celsius while the maximum setting is 75 degrees.

3. Move the dial until the arrow is on the location you want. Pull out on the knob to lock the thermostat in place and activate the child resistant controls. You will hear a click to indicate that the knob is locked in place at the current temperature.

4. Allow the hot water heater to operate for a few hours. After the unit has had a chance to heat the water in your system, turn on a faucet that is connected to the hot water heater and let the hot water run for a moment. If the water is too hot or too cold for your liking, you can go back and readjust the temperature until it is at the optimum level for your home.

How Fast Does A Roadrunner Run

How Fast Does a Roadrunner Run?

Roadrunners are birds of the southwestern United States and Mexico. They inhabit arid and semiarid regions and have a varied diet. Made famous by a children's cartoon, roadrunners got their name for their tendency to run along the ground rather than fly through the air. In this article you will find out some facts about the roadrunner, including how fast it can run.

Time Frame

Roadrunners have been clocked at speeds of up to 18 miles per hour. They prefer sprinting to flying but will fly to escape such predators as coyotes. A roadrunner will travel with its tail and its head held parallel to the ground. Their speed is often overestimated because of their ability to weave in and out of brush rapidly, making them appear a bit faster than they really are.

Geography

New Mexico claims the roadrunner as its state bird, doing so in March of 1949. Also known as the chaparral bird, the roadrunner lives from California east through Arkansas and portions of Louisiana and southwards deep into Mexico.

Types

There are two species of roadrunner- the greater roadrunner and the lesser roadrunner. The lesser version is found in Mexico and Central America while the greater roadrunner is the American bird. The greater roadrunner is the size of a chicken but much slimmer. It has an extended tail and a short and shaggy crest on its head. The colors of the roadrunner are a light brown streaked with darker patches. The crest has a bluish hue to it. The roadrunner has a long and very sturdy beak.

Misconceptions

The fame of the "Roadrunner" cartoons, in which the bird speeds along and goes "Beep, Beep!" has led people to believe that this is how roadrunners act. But roadrunners are actually members of the cuckoo family and their call sounds more like "Coo-coo-coo-coooooooo." It can also make a whrrrrrrring sound. Roadrunners are at the center of a particularly ridiculous legend that tells how if a roadrunner is bitten by a rattlesnake that it can go and eat a special herb that acts as an antidote to the venom. This is not at all true.

Considerations

These birds are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. Roadrunners are famous for their ability to kill snakes, especially rattlesnakes. They will also eat tarantulas and scorpions. They use their speed to run down lizards which they kill with their beak. Roadrunners also eat small birds, which they will actually leap into the air to catch. Roadrunners swallow snakes whole, so it is not unusual to see one walking around as it tries to digest it, the snake hanging from its mouth.

Be A Trophy Wife

Sure, being a trophy wife may seem like a day at the spa, but the shoes of a trophy wife, albeit stylish and to die for, aren't easy to fill. Follow these steps to see if you've got what it takes to become Mr. Right's right-hand ma'am.

Instructions

1. Turn heads, especially his boss's, his father's, and all of his colleagues'. When you show up on your man's arm, onlookers should lose their train of thought, nervously clear their throat and instinctively hide their wedding bands.

2. Network, even when you're off the clock. A company cocktail hour here and a golf fundraiser there would be a piece of cake-- fat free, at that-but the real work starts when he's not looking. You should be networking at the salon, the country club, the gym and anywhere else where his name needs dropped.

3. Nail the lawn boy. Or the pool boy or the handy man. Take your pick. You work hard for your man and he has no responsibility to thank you for it, so find someone else to thank you for your services. Just make sure he's more ripped, has more hair and looks hot when sweaty.

4. Organize parties, fundraisers and dinners, even when you haven't seen your man in person since last week. He needs your assistance even when he's invisible.

5. Mind the three B's: Blonde, Boobs, BMW. Keep them well-maintained and up-to-date.

6. Look good in Lycra. Have your man arrange for a gym membership and use it regularly, if only to make an appearance. Order salads when in public, but don't eat them. Over-indulge on wine and champagne. Drink coffee, coffee drinks and anything else, as long as it's in a coffee cup. Your meals should really only consist of drinking.

How Does Fasting Affect Blood Glucose Levels

How Does Fasting Affect Blood Glucose Levels?

Blood Glucose and Insulin

Your body needs sugar in your bloodstream, called blood glucose, to survive. Your pancreas produces a hormone called insulin that bonds with the blood glucose. Once the insulin and blood glucose have bonded, they are able to provide your body with a supply of energy. There are several medical conditions that can cause dangerous spikes and dips in your blood glucose levels. A test called a fasting blood glucose test is the best way to determine whether you suffer from one of them.

Causes for Fluctuations in Blood Glucose Levels

Normal blood glucose levels are between 70 mg/dl and 120 mg/dl (milligrams of glucose to deciliters of blood). There are several causes for minor fluctuations within and outside of normal range: eating a meal, strenuous exercise, anxiety or stress and severe illness or disease.

Many of the foods that you eat contain carbohydrates that become blood glucose in your system. After eating a meal, particularly one that is high in carbohydrates or processed sugar, your system is flooded with glucose and your pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin to keep up. Even if you do not suffer from any type of medical condition, it is not uncommon to see your blood glucose level rise to as high as 180 mg/dl during that first hour after a meal. A person with an insulin disorder would see levels higher than 200 mg/dl.

When you exercise, your body has an increased need for energy. During this time, the pancreas produces additional stores of insulin to provide you with that energy. When you stop exercising, your blood glucose levels temporarily rise due to the amount of insulin in your body. When your pancreas stops the additional secretion of insulin, your blood glucose level falls.

Physiology of Insulin Secretion

There are two types of insulin secretion: meal-related and basal. Meal-related insulin secretion is the rapid insulin production that happens after you eat a meal. Any excess blood glucose is stored as fat.

Basal insulin secretion is what happens after your last meal is digested. When you fast, insulin works in conjunction with other hormones to maintain the blood glucose necessary to feed your brain and break down any stored fat to be used as energy.

During exercise, basal insulin secretion falls to allow for an increased supply of energy from your blood glucose.

Fasting

When you fast, your body continues to produce blood glucose from basal insulin secretion. This maintains your body with a steady supply of energy and brain food through the breakdown of those stores of fat. If you are healthy, your blood sugar levels should remain normal until there is not enough stored fat to keep up the supply.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the blood glucose level of a healthy person should continue to be in the normal range after an eight- to 12-hour fast. A glucose level higher than that can signal a serious medical condition such as type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

Bike 100 Miles In A Day

Biking 100 miles in a day will take a great deal of hard work and dedication. However, it is an attainable goal and something you should not give up on. The following steps will tell you the easiest way to accomplish this fantastic goal.

Instructions

1. Start working out on a daily basis. You will need to be in great condition to complete this challenge. If you are not a member of a fitness center, you need to be. Start walking and lifting weights on a daily basis to build your stamina.

2. Ask a trainer at the fitness center to help you get in shape for your goal. Once you do this, you will have someone to encourage and push you through the hard times and support you until you complete the 100 miles.

3. Bike daily. This can be done on a stationary bike at the fitness center but you should try to ride the bike you will be going 100 miles on. Find a bike trail in your area and ride as much as possible.

4. Stay focused. Times are going to get really hard for you during this training process but if you have your mind set on this goal, do not let anything change your mind.

5. Enter bike races and charity riding events in your area. Most of these events are 25-50 miles but they will be perfect practice for you. Compete in as many as possible before your big ride.

Know How Many Repetitions To Do When Lifting Weights

Conventional weight training wisdom dictates that a person should choose a weight they can lift eight to 12 times in a set. While this range is a useful rule of thumb, the question of how many repetitions to perform depends upon a person's individual strength goals, age, experience and a variety of other factors. As general rule: If your goal is to gain strength and power, use more weight and do fewer repetitions. If your goal is endurance, use less weight and do more reps.

More or Less

A repetition, or rep, is a complete motion of a particular exercise. A set is a group of repetitions. Opinions vary widely as to the numbers of reps and sets one should do to build strength. But generally, if you want to get larger and gain strength, choose a heavier weight that you can lift four to six times per set. The weight should be heavy enough so that the last rep requires a great deal of struggle. If you are using heavier weights, allow yourself more time to rest between sets.

If your goal in weight training is tone and endurance, choose a lighter weight that you can lift 10 to 12 times. Again, your weight should be heavy enough so that the last repetition is very difficult to lift.

Why does using more weight and performing fewer reps promote more strength? For one, a person using heavier weights tends to work out harder. Body makeup is also key. The human body is composed of two different types of muscles: slow twitch and fast twitch.

According to Indiania University School of Medicine, slow twitch muscles contract slowly, use a lot oxygen, are heavily fueled by blood vessels and are capable of greater endurance. They are drawn upon for such endurance exercises as long-distance running and cycling.

Fast twitch muscles contract quickly, do not utilize many blood vessels and are capable of more force but less endurance. Sprinting and throwing are activities that draw heavily on these muscles. When you lift heavy weights, you engage and develop more of these fast twitch muscles, thereby developing your body's strength.

Variations

Keep yourself engaged. Work on both strength and tone by trying different sizes of weights on different days. Also, try varying sizes of weights between sets. For instance, instead of simply performing three to five sets of the same weight and number of repetitions, try the "pyramid" system, which entails increasing the load and reducing the repetitions with every set. You might, for instance, lift 100 pounds 10 times in the first set, 120 pounds six times in the second set, and 140 pounds four times in the third set. In the "reverse pyramid" approach, you would do the opposite of this, decreasing the load and increasing the repetitions between sets.

Fun Fundraisers That Raise A Lot Of Money

A fundraiser that involves a diverse group of people can be fun and lucrative.

Fundraising can be an effective way to raise money for your charitable organization or civic group. In 2010, Americans gave slightly less than $300 billion in charitable donation with approximately two-thirds of that money coming from private individuals, according to the National Park Service website. Fun fundraisers that raise a lot of money can help promote your cause while developing a positive relationship with your donors.

Monte Carlo Night

A Monte Carlo night can be fun for several reasons. One reason is that people get the chance to gamble for a good cause. Another reason Monte Carlo nights can be fun is it gives people a chance to dress up and act like they are high-rollers for the evening. Monte Carlo nights tend to raise a lot of money because of the gambling, but don't forget to serve concessions as well to make extra money.

Charity Run

A charity run is something that families and diverse groups of people can do together. When you have a fundraiser that can include entire families, you have developed something that people will remember as a fun family event. The more runners you have gathering donations, the more money your charity run can make. But what also helps to open up the fundraising potential of a charity run is the concessions and festival-type games you can have at the starting and ending point of the run.

Drive-in Movie

Family activities tend to create the most interactive, fun and lucrative kinds of fundraisers. A drive-in movie fundraising event is something that anyone can enjoy and can be turned into an all-day event that will generate substantial income. You can rent a portable, inflatable movie screen, or ask to have one donated to your event. A less-expensive alternative is to hang a bed sheet between two poles. Sound can be provided by a portable FM receiver that broadcasts to each car radio or any portable radios people bring. If you do not have a parking lot you can use as your temporary drive-in theater, then set up in a large field and encourage people to bring lawn chairs and portable radios. You can make money selling tickets to the event, having concessions all day and having games during the daytime leading up to the movie.

Miniature Golf

Miniature golf can be an all-day fundraising event that has several options. You can have a tournament and ask local vendors to contribute prizes for the winners, or you can just have open miniature golf. This kind of a fundraiser can be extremely profitable in areas where there are no miniature golf courses already. You can rent a portable miniature golf course or ask to have one donated. Sell concessions, hold raffles for prizes and have carnival games on site to help generate more money. Because miniature golf tends to take a while, you will have a captive audience much of the day to give donations.

Boost Up Xbox Live Achievement Points

A marathon of easy-to-beat games can boost your gamerscore.

As a member of Xbox LIVE, you're familiar with your gamerscore: a running score attached to your profile that keeps track of every in-game achievement you unlock. The number of points that achievements are worth and the difficulty of earning them varies from game to game. If your gamerscore is low, be it from playing difficult games, not playing enough games, or just not being very good at video games, worry not--there are easy ways for you to give it a quick boost.

Instructions

1. Rent a variety of Xbox games with a focus on those with easy-to-unlock achievements. These games are well documented online (see References for links), and include "King Kong," "Tony Hawk: American Wasteland," "TMNT" and "Cars."

2. Invite a friend to help. For example, if you know someone who played through "King Kong" five times and can't wait for his sixth go-around, invite him to do it while logged into your account, and net yourself an easy 1000 points.

3. Play online. Some games, like "Far Cry" and "Burnout: Revenge," give out achievement points simply for playing online. In some games, you don't even have to win your online matches.

4. Download games on Xbox LIVE Arcade. This service offers classic games like "Duke Nukem 3D" and "Doom," so if you spent the 90s playing through these hits, you can breeze through them again to rack up some easy points.

Fun Ways To Raise Money For Charity

You can make money for charity by running a marathon.

Raising money for charity is a great way to do something selfless and deduct some money from your taxes, although these events can be quite challenging to plan as they often include ticket sales, donations, event space, decorating and much more all done pro bono. Still, in the end, if you pull it off, it represents a great accomplishment not only for you but for the charity for which you've raised money.

Casino Night

Casino night is a fun way to give some money to charity and have a great time doing it in the process. When people throw casino nights, they'll often incorporate a number of events into one black-tie evening to raise as much money as possible. Many opt to have a catered black-tie dinner incorporated into the event to make it more exclusive, though having two cover prices---one including dinner and the other only including admission---is a great way to bring in extra patrons. Including an admission fee, or selling tickets to the event that cover part of the festivities, will tell you when you've made back the money you've spent on the event. Remember, you can make additional money on drink sales, gambling and donations, so the ticket price may not provide the majority of the money you bring in.

Raffle

A raffle is a great way to make some money for charity, and a great way to give away some prizes doing it. Essentially, a raffle is a lottery where your patrons purchase a ticket representing a chance to win a prize item. Prize items can be anything from a vacation or flat-screen television to a new pair of deck slippers. Finding people or businesses to donate prizes can be beneficial, as it will mean more money going toward your charity. People can buy as many raffle tickets as they want at a set cost, but only one winning ticket number will get them one of the prizes, so the more they buy, in the more money goes toward your charity.

Auction

An auction works best with a lot of items donated, so it can take a lot of planning ahead of time before you even set a date for the auction. Regardless, an auction can bring in a limitless amount of money because people are willing to overspend on items knowing that the proceeds will go to a good cause. You can auction anything from old furniture, jewelry, donated electronics or perhaps even an old car. If you're lucky, you might find some businesses willing to donate some items for the auction, which can be tax deductible for them and beneficial for everyone.

Charity Walk

A charity walk works by taking donations either as a set amount or per mile you walk when the day comes. This is an effective way to make money as long as you know people that can sponsor you, as it depends on you going out and asking people to donate to your charitable event. If you've got the sponsors, it can become quite profitable.

"Gta San Andreas" Gifts For Girlfriends

A sandbox, action brawler from developer Rockstar North, "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" allows players to assume the role of street gang member Carl "CJ" Johnson as he attempts to find his mother's killer. Part of the optional game play in "San Andreas" is the ability to get and keep a girlfriend. Once they have a girlfriend, players must keep them happy by giving the girls presents located around the cities of San Andreas.

The Girlfriends

"San Andreas" contains six girlfriends for CJ to date: Denise, Helena, Michelle, Katie, Barbara and Millie. Dating each girl offers different advantages that begin unlocking when players get their relationship meter above 50 percent. Each girl has her own tastes for the type of body she finds attractive, and requirements for how high your "Sex Appeal" meter needs to be to score a date. To increase your relationship meter, you need to take the girls on dates that suit their individual interests and to give them gifts.

Types of Gifts

The game has three types of gifts that CJ can give to his girlfriend to increase their relationship meter: flowers, dildos and a vibrator. Flowers are the most common and easiest to acquire gift in the game, followed by dildos, but only one vibrator exists. Each gift adds the same amount to a player's relationship meter, but players who want to score a 100-percent completion rating on the game will need to collect each type of gift.

Flower Locations

Flowers grow in many locations in San Andreas, but each girlfriend has flowers growing near her location in the game. Players can find flowers at the gas station west of Denise's house across the railroad tracks, and between the two exits on the highway when heading toward Helena's house. On the game map, players should notice an "S" curve when heading toward Michelle's house that contains several flowers, and also at the Pay N' Spray near Katie's place. When heading to Barbara's sheriff station, head toward the gas station to the northeast, and the cul-de-sac directly west of Millie's house.

Toy Location

The sex toys in "San Andreas" are in two locations. The dildos are in the showers of the police station in Los Santos. Getting to them requires players to enter each station, go through the door in front of them and then take an immediate right to end up in the police station locker room. Be sure not to carry any weapons into the police station to avoid getting a two-star rating and having all of the cops shoot at you. The game's lone vibrator is in Bayside behind a dumpster, next to a construction lot surrounded by work cones.

How Does An Olympic Swimmer Train

Nutrition

Nutrition is an important part of training for any Olympic athlete but even more so for swimmers. Swimming burns a lot of calories. A 150-pound body doing vigorous freestyle laps can burn nearly 700 calories in an hour. Many Olympic swimmers will swim more than six or seven miles a week. Nutrition should be targeted to build a balance between endurance and muscle strength because of the stringent training requirements. Protein, protein supplements and carbohydrates should be a major part of the diet. Michael Phelps consumed 12,000 calories a day, six times the amount of an average man's intake.

Weight Training

Weight training for Olympic swimmers should be focused on building long and strong muscles. A swimmer's body should have enough strength to cut through water resistance while providing enough flexibility to perform repetitive motions like the various swimming strokes. The legs should be strong enough to get a good push off of the walls for turns, yet able to maintain the propelling kicks. Some lifting techniques for Olympic swimmers focus on range of motion, especially with the arms. All repetitions should be performed at their maximum length with medium to heavy resistance. One exercise involves strengthening the shoulders through standing raises. Swimmers stand with their feet one foot apart while holding dumbbells at thigh level in each hand. They raise their arms slowly to shoulder level with palms facing each other. Then they turn their palms to face the floor and slowly lower the weights. Weight training should be at least 30 minutes a day (not including warm-ups), two times a week.

Recovery

Forty-one-year-old Dana Torres emphasized recovery as part of her Olympic training. She became the oldest person to win a swimming medal in the 2008 Olympics. Torres included massages as part of her regular workout, aiding the muscles in recovering faster from strenuous workouts. Her massages were not the spa-type of relaxing rub downs. They often included two people standing on and kneading her muscles, applying great pressure. Ice baths are also a good way to recover. Since swimming requires use of almost all the major muscle groups, it isn't uncommon for there to be great soreness after training. Ice baths help reduce swelling and soreness faster, allowing Olympic swimmers to train more often throughout the week.

Mental Training

Swimming in a crowded gym with thousands of onlookers may seem like a lot of pressure for an athlete. With the entire world watching, the pressure can multiply a hundred fold. That's why mental toughness is also a part of Olympic training. From sun up to sun down, the focus on swimming could easily be taken away by a multitude of distractions. Interviews, autographs, tours, crowds and competing against the best in the world can't come easy. Olympic swimmers must strengthen their minds to focus on the event at hand. Some swimmers develop routines like listening to certain songs or self-talk before hitting the water.

Swimming

Olympic swimmers don't just hit the pool and do laps all day; they practice all the techniques needed to shave off those precious seconds from their times. Almost every aspect of swimming is studied, from the mechanics of the stroke to the push-off at the end of each lap. For example, olympic coaches may focus on sculling, the action of moving your hands near your head to complete a stroke. The amount of time an Olympic swimmer spends in a pool training depends on the events they swim. Dana Torres, a sprint swimmer, trained at least two hours a day swimming 5,000 meters worth of specialized laps and drills. Famed Olympian Janet Evans, who set world records in middle and long-distance events, swam up to 12 miles a day when she trained. Rebecca Adlington, another competitive swimmer, reported she swam at least one two-hour session per day in the pool, with a few days of two two-hour sessions. Each session involved 3,000 to 8,000 meters of swimming and water aerobics.

Be A Mobile Food Vendor

Hot dog carts and mobile catering units serve lunch on the go while they are on the go. They move from site to site, selling snacks and lunches and then hurry on to catch the next site for its break or lunch. Be a mobile food vendor and deliver this fast-paced food.

Instructions

1. Purchase a mobile food unit from Wysscateringtrucks.com. The unit comes complete with oven, shelves, ice bin, coffee urns and optional equipment you choose.

2. Apply for a mobile food vendor permit at your local city hall. Ask if there are any other licenses or permits you need. Also, visit your local Board of Health Department and advise them you are starting a mobile food business.

3. Find out where the local wholesale houses are in your area. You will purchase your food products for resale at the wholesale houses. The first time you visit, you will need to show them your vendor license, so take that with you.

4. Line up stops to service as a mobile food vendor. You need to get permission if you want to park your unit on private property, so go to each location you want to service and get permission from the manager or owner to bring your mobile food unit to their place of business.

5. Check local ordinances if you want to park on the street with your mobile food unit. Street vendors are permitted in some cities or some streets so be sure you are allowed to park or you may get a ticket.

6. Visit the locations that you lined up every day at the same time so people will get used to seeing you and buy food from you. Display your vendor license clearly on your mobile food unit in case any local authorities want to view it.

Break In Boat Shoes

A sailboat's not necessary to wear fashionable boat shoes.

Boat shoes are both stylish and comfortable, making them a popular choice for many people, even those who spend little time sailing. However, they have a low-slung shape that can make them difficult to break in. Since boat shoes look best worn without socks, a pair that you haven't yet broken in can pinch and chafe. Take some time to break in your new boat shoes before wearing them for a full day. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Try your new boat shoes on to make absolutely sure that they are the right size and style.

2. Fill a bucket with cold water.

3. Add 1/3 cup sea salt to the water.

4. Submerge your new shoes in the bucket and let them sit for 24 hours.

5. Remove your shoes from the bucket and place them on your feet without any socks. They should be soggy wet.

6. Walk around in the shoes until they dry.

7. Evaluate the comfort level of the shoes. If they still feel stiff or uncomfortable, repeat the previous steps as necessary.

8. Begin wearing the shoes for short periods. Over the course of a week or two, gradually increase the amount of time you spend wearing them.

9. Try wearing your boat shoes for a full day to see how they feel. Bring a backup pair of shoes just in case.

Field Day Games For Children Ages 512

Field day games allow students and teachers to relax and celebrate the end of the school year.

Field day typically occurs in the spring and is a day of games and interaction to celebrate another year of school. Many schools structure field day into stations with team and individual events. Games for children 5 to 12 years old should range from races to games of skill and strategy.

Relay Games

Relay games provide team-building opportunities for children between the ages 5 to 12. Cone relay allows you to divide children into mixed groups. Line each team up so everyone is opposite a traffic cone. On "go," the first person runs or hops to the cone to place a ball on top. He then runs back to tag the next player in line. That player runs to the cone and removes the ball and brings it back to the next player. Play continues like this for a designated amount of time. Each team scores a point each time the ball is placed on the cone. Challenge students by giving the teams another activity to do while running, such as keeping a balloon in the air.

Golf Games

Create field day games around the basic structure of traditional golf. In Frisbee golf, for example, students divide into teams of four. Each player has a Frisbee. Set up targets in the golfing area such as trees, cone, or buckets. From a designated starting point, let each student throw the Frisbee toward the target. The goal is to be the first to hit the target. After the first toss, the person whose Frisbee lands furthest away will go next, followed by the next furthest until someone hits the target. Keep score like in golf, with each throw counting as a stroke.

Hoop Games

Hula hoops provide several field day game possibilities. Line up teams so each faces an open area. On "go," the first player from each team rolls a hoop. When the hoop falls, the next person runs to the hoop and rolls it again. Play continues until one team rolls the hoop across a designated finish line. Horseshoes can be played with hoops as well. Set hula hoops on the ground about 15 to 25 feet apart (the distance should vary depending on age). Divide students into teams and station each group behind a hoop. Each player tosses a beanbag toward the hoop at the opposite end. If the bag lands in the hoop, the team earns two points. If it touches the hoops but isn't inside, the team earns one point.

Teacher Participation

Part of field day is providing a chance for teachers to relax and enjoy activities with students. Kids versus teachers volleyball or basketball can be divided by grade level. For younger grades (ages 5 to 7) teachers may have to play on their knees or with a hand behind their back. Another option is to arrange games that enable teachers and students to play as teams. Play teacher sled races where teacher sits on a sled with a rope attached to it. Students pull the teacher on the sled for a specified distance. This distance should vary by age. The team that pulls the teacher across the finish line in the shortest time wins.

Build A Soapbox Racer Car

One of the simplest ways to build a soapbox car is with a wagon.

According to Monster Guide, "Soapbox derbies are a favorite competitive sport among adolescents and teenagers." For decades, young and old alike have enjoyed the hobby of building soapbox cars. A soapbox racer is a car built from a variety of materials utilizing a steering and braking system. The race takes place on a sloped track which enables the car to move around the track without a motor, powered by gravity. Making a soapbox racer requires some preparation and planning, but that is a part of the overall racing experience.

Instructions

1. Design your soapbox racer. Most builders purchase blueprints that can be found online or at a hobby store. Generally, with the prints, you should get a list of materials and tools needed to complete the project. Another easy option would be to purchase a soapbox racer kit. The kits consist of pre-fabricated parts that are ready to be assembled. An experienced builder may want a more challenging option of designing and building a racer from scratch using materials found at local junkyards, neighborhoods and lumber suppliers. Always keep in mind, though, that if a soapbox race is going to be entered, one must adhere to the rules, regulations and specifications for competing in that particular race.

2. Build a durable chassis for the vehicle that will hold all the parts together. The chassis needs to be strong but lightweight. The design is important because it determines the shape of the body. Most racers choose an oval shape for the efficiency and speed. A light metal pipe is recommended when building the frame to keep from weighing the car down. If the car is too heavy, it may tip over.

3. Assemble the drive-train, which involves assembling the axle, wheel system and brakes. Unless you are experienced in this area, always follow the instructions on the plans closely. Improper assembly can cause serious injury. To be able to maneuver the car, the front axle should be connected to the steering column. One option for wheels would be the baby carriage design with slightly larger wheels in the rear. Putting the smaller wheels in the front will give the race car more control and stability. And, of course, making sure the braking system is correct is a essential because without brakes the driver can't stop.

4. Assemble the body of your soapbox racer. The body should be strong enough to protect the driver and ensure their safety while racing. For better safety, reinforce the body of the car with trusses, or a roll cage for additional safety. A five-point harness or seat belt can also be added. The car can now be painted. Most any type of paint can be used, with any color and design. Double-check with the racing authority for rules and regulations.

5. It is now time to test your soapbox racer out. Adolescents should do this under adult supervision, and ensure that the braking and steering systems are working properly. After a few test runs, and when you are confident all systems are go, then it is race ready.

Bring Out Your Voice To The Fullest

Learn to project your voice to bring out its fullest potential.

If you are an amateur singer, bringing your voice out to the fullest is important for creating a strong, powerful sound. You can do this by adopting the correct posture, breathing and projection techniques. The benefit of this is not only a full sound but you will protect your voice and throat from damage. Work on your techniques gradually so you do not strain your voice. As you practice you will see a marked improvement.

Instructions

1. Get into good physical shape. To bring out your voice to the fullest you have to support your diaphragm properly which is helped by strengthening the associated muscles. These include muscles around the naval, pelvis and solar plexus. This will give you greater control of your voice so you can use it to its fullest potential. Sit-ups, swimming, running or Pilates will strengthen your stomach muscles.

2. Stand correctly. Align your spine, roll your shoulders backwards and look straight ahead. Lift your chest upwards so that you can fill your lungs with air properly. Hold your chin upwards slightly so that your throat opens up and you can take those deep breaths.

3. Breathe properly to bring your voice out to the fullest. First, put your hand on your abdominal muscles -- this is the area over the top of your belly button. Then, cough. Feel how the muscles contract within your stomach and push the air out of your lungs.

4. Practice taking a big breath. Your lungs needs to fill from the bottom so that you can make a powerful sound when the air is pushed out. Take a sharp, deep breath from the bottom of you lungs through your mouth. Feel your stomach expand and push out, like you practiced when you coughed.

5. Sing a note while looking in a mirror. As you exhale, open your mouth to release the air. Listen to how loud it is, remembering to always keep your posture in the right position..

6. Open up the space within your throat to create a fuller, louder sound. Try again to sing a note but this time concentrate on opening your mouth fully and push the air from the bottom of your lungs. Sing the note and physically widen your throat to project for a fuller sound.

Good Exercises To Lose Calories While On The Couch

Burn calories while sitting on your couch.

Forget about relaxing on the couch; instead, use this piece of furniture as a tool to help you burn calories and build your muscles. All you need is a firm couch and little willpower. Do a few simple exercises to tone and strengthen your major muscles during commercial breaks or while you are watching a movie.

Modified Couch Crunches

Strengthen your abdominal muscles and burn calories with modified couch crunches. You won't be able to see the television during this exercise, so do this one during commercials. Lie on your back, bend your knees, place your feet on the armrest and gaze at the ceiling. Place your hands behind your head for support, but avoid pulling on your neck. Activate your abdominal muscles by raising your head, shoulders and upper back off of the couch. Keep your chin away from your chest to avoid straining your neck. Hold for a few seconds and then slowly lower yourself into the starting position. Repeat this exercise 15 times. If your couch is too soft to be supportive, try this exercise on the floor with your feet resting on the couch cushion.

Couch Squats

Tone your buttocks and thighs with couch squats. In addition to the muscle-building benefit, you will also burn 20 calories by performing 10 squats. Stand directly in front of the couch with your feet shoulder-width apart. Stand straight and look forward to keep your spine in alignment. Place your hands on your hips and tighten your abdominal muscles. Bend your knees as you slowly lower yourself to the edge of the couch. Before you touch the couch, tighten your buttocks muscles and stand up. Repeat this exercise 10 times.

Decline Pushups

Build muscles in your chest, arms and abdominals with decline pushups. According to the American Council on Exercise, a 150-pound person burns 5.45 calories per minute doing decline pushups. Lie on the floor in front of the couch in a pushup position. Rest the palms of your hands on the floor and extend your elbows. Place your feet firmly on the couch cushion while lifting your hips. Look down at the ground and activate your core muscles to keep your spine straight. To modify the pose, place your knees on the couch cushion. Lower yourself toward the floor by bending your elbows. Push yourself up to return to the starting position. Repeat this exercise 15 times.

Roll Down

Build abdominal and inner-thigh muscles with a simple roll-down exercise. This exercise will help you burn calories because you'll build muscle mass. The Mayo Clinic explains that people who have more muscle burn more calories by speeding up their basal metabolic rate. To perform this exercise, you need a firm couch. Sit on the couch, bend your knees and place your feet firmly on the couch. Keep your back straight. Position a pillow between your knees for support. Place your hands on the back of your thighs. Squeeze your knees and extend your elbows as you slowly roll back. When your head is nearly touching the couch, hold the position for five seconds while taking deep breaths. Slowly roll back up. Repeat this exercise 15 times.

Avoid Your Voice Cracking While Singing

Avoid Your Voice Cracking While Singing

If you have ever sung, you may know what it's like for your voice to crack as you struggle to hit those high notes. This article discusses ways in which you can prevent those cracks from appearing during your next performance.

Instructions

1. Drink fluids to prevent your vocal cords from drying. Consider sleeping with a humidifier next to your bed if you live in a dry climate.

2. Perform your vocal exercises daily and don't strain your voice. If your throat hurts when swallowing or singing is painful, take a rest from performing.

3. Practice transitioning from your "chest voice" to your "head voice." Most people can sing powerfully from their chest voice, where the sound is loud and amplified, but the head voice, which singers use to reach high notes, is often underdeveloped. Sing "nay" in your chest voice and begin working your way up the scale as you move your voice into your head. You will feel and hear the tone change.

4. Breathe from your diaphragm. To prevent cracks in your singing voice, support the notes with a strong breath.

5. Relax. If you are nervous about singing in front of a large audience, your voice may crack due to tension in your neck and vocal muscles. Don't let your nerves inhibit your singing. Perform a few gentle stretches to release that inner tension and calm your jitters.

Gun Shooting Techniques

Frequent practice will help improve proficency with firearms.

Accuracy is the primary goal of gun marksmanship. Although the definition of accuracy will vary from small pistols to rifles, most all marksmen want to get their shots closer to their intended targets. And while there is no substitute for practice, there are a few techniques that when applied to your gun shooting will produce a noticeable improvement.

Trigger Control and Sight Picture

While there is quite a bit of emphasis put on aiming a gun, trigger control receives comparatively less attention. A marksman can put quite a bit of time into aiming his weapon, but that aim can be spoiled if he then pulls the trigger with an unsteady hand. A better technique is to line up the front dot-shaped sight between the arms of the back, U-shaped sight and the target to create a correct sight picture. Then begin to apply pressure to the trigger. As you slowly squeeze the trigger, refine your sight picture. This will ensure that your shot is more accurate.

Weaver Stance

The Weaver stance is named for Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Jack Weaver, who pioneered the stance. The stance helps to improve accuracy by keeping the gun steady thorough isometrics. To position yourself in a Weaver stance, stand with feet shoulder width apart, and your nondominant leg slightly forward. Martial artists call this stance a front stance. Your body should be turned at a 45-degree angle to the target. Hold your gun in a two-handed grip with your dominant hand to the inside. Push out with your dominant hand and pull with your weaker hand.

Take a Deep Breath

It's difficult to fire accurately while inhaling or exhaling. Instead you should take a deep breath and hold it while aiming and firing. It is important to practice this technique until it becomes second nature. When breathing properly becomes second nature, it is easier to aim and shoot with both speed and accuracy.

Guest Bartending Fundraising Ideas

Guest bartender fundraisers take advantage of the bar-scene crowd.

People flock to bars to drink, socialize and sometimes eat. Play off the bar scene crowd with guest bartending fundraiser ideas for your organization. Get people who are well-known in your community, or even throughout the world, to serve as guest bartenders. However, be sure that you follow laws that relate to what age groups may serve alcohol.

Bartender Competition

Organize a competition between the guest bartenders and the house bartenders. The bartenders compete in a variety of categories, including fastest drink mixer, best original drink and best bartender tricks. To raise money, charge bar patrons an admission fee to see the competition. To raise more money for your charity, charge the bartenders who want to compete in the competition a registration fee. Give the winning bartender a cash award and a trophy.

Celebrity Guest Bartender

Recruit celebrity bartenders to serve guests at the bar. If you cannot get A-list stars to serve as celebrity bartenders, then ask local celebrities such as radio disc jockeys, television news reporters and local professional athletes to participate. To help create more buzz for the celebrity guest bartenders, create a signature drink that is inspired by each one. Raise money through this guest bartending fundraising idea by getting sponsors and selling the signature drinks.

Sales Percentages

Make an arrangement with the bar's management for your organization to take home a percentage of the total sales that each guest bartender raised. Request percentages from the entire night of operations or from a specific time frame of two hours or more. If possible, take advantage of a bar's busy weekend crowd. To increase sales, feature specials on everything that is served at the bar, including beer and mixed drinks.

Costume Contest

Create a guest bartender costume contest. Each guest bartender has to create an original costume. Bar patrons vote for the bartender who they think has the most creative costume by purchasing a drink from him. Encourage bar patrons to tip the guest bartenders generously, as their money is going to charity. The guest bartender with the most votes and who has raised the most money wins the contest.
