A half Ironman distance triathlon, sometimes called a Tinman triathlon, consists of a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike race and 13.1-mile run. While not as grueling as a full Ironman distance event, half Ironman events still require considerable training in running, biking and swimming ahead of time to complete the competition.


Start Training Early


An athlete builds endurance progressively and consistently over time, not overnight. Half Ironman events require significant endurance in multiple areas. Giving the body enough time to develop the necessary endurance across all three components can mean the difference between finishing or not finishing, as well as suffering injury or escaping it. Appropriate Gear


Few things hamper an athlete more than inappropriate training gear. Like any other serious commitment, training requires a monetary investment. Proper running shoes, swimming trunks (or bodysuit) and a lightweight racing bike prepare the body for the actual race conditions and reduce the likelihood of injury. Make sure to choose properly sized gear and equipment, as improperly sized gear can increase fatigue, inhibit proper technique and produce blisters. The athlete need not train in full race-day gear constantly, but should practice in full gear several times before the race to understand how it will feel.


Eating


Training for a half Ironman event entails altering eating behaviors. The nutritional needs of the body change when training for distance events, generally requiring higher levels of carbohydrates. Triathlon coach and two time World Triathlon champion Ken Mierke suggests practicing eating for race day to determine what combination of food works best for you. He offers a ratio of 1 gram of protein for every 3 or 4 grams of carbohydrates as a starting point.


Hydration


Dehydration can have serious consequences for the body. The body loses excessive amounts of water during distance runs and bike rides, and should be replaced with water or a sports drink frequently. Ken Mierke recommends hydrating on 15-minute schedule to avoid dehydration. Also, hydrate immediately before and after a distance swim, as in-swim hydration poses insurmountable difficulties.


Brick Workout


Brick workouts combine a distance bike ride followed by a run. These workouts help the athlete develop both endurance and physical familiarity with transitioning from one demanding type of exercise to another in a short space of time. For beginners, start slow with a bike ride in the one- to two-hour range, followed by a half-hour to one hour run, suggests Ken Mierke. Increase the duration and intensity from there. During the last three weeks of training, however, athletes should decrease the duration of all training, though maintain intensity, as a way to allow the body to recover before the actual race.

Become A Freestyle Skier

While many skiers enjoy the sport for its relaxation and exercise benefits, many freestyle skiers seek the adrenaline and challenge of defying gravity and performing aerobatics over the snow while on skis. Freestyle combines the Olympic sports of skiing aerials and moguls. Aerial skiing involves skiing off of high jumps and performing somersaults or flips in the air before landing. Instructions


1. Develop strong basic skiing technique. Once you can safely ski treacherous downhill runs, you are ready to begin learning freestyle skiing. Seek training from instructors in your area to become competent at basic skiing skills.


2. Find an instructor that can teach you skills designed for alpine and freestyle skiers, including balancing strategies and techniques called ski-edge control.


3. Practice jumping on a trampoline to master jump techniques essential to the aerial component of freestyle skiing. Work with a ski instructor to avoid hurting yourself on the trampoline. Trampoline preparation will help you learn to land your jumps safely.


4. Exercise jumps using a water ramp. Many ski courses have access to this equipment, and your instructor will guide you in its use. A water ramp allows you to practice jumping techniques while you fall safely into a pool of water to avoid injury.


5. Practice your new skills repeatedly under the supervision of your instructor until she decides you have reached a level of competence that allows you to work independently without risking injury. Once you are prepared, you can enter freestyle skiing competitions.

Food runners are an important part of a restaurant staff and serve as assistants to the waitstaff. Popular Fund Raising Ideas


It sometimes helps to use familiar but fun fund raising methods to draw an audience. Hold a talent show where contestants pay an entry fee, and maybe even get sponsors, and award a portion of the entry fees as cash prizes to the winners. Carnival activities, such as a water dunk tank or a pie throwing booth, are popular and fun ways to attract a crowd at a fund raiser. This is a fund raiser that can be done in an office, in a charity event or even as part of a community fund raiser. The idea is to wear the worst hat possible and then to win a prize when you are seen wearing it. People would need to register in advance and pay an entrance fee. Prizes could be a portion of the entrance fee, or it may be possible to get local vendors to donate prizes. It is easier to do this kind of event in a controlled environment such as an office where people can parade their hats for the judges. But a larger event could make this much more fun. For example, if you are holding a large outdoor charity event, then you would have people register and wear a number to identify themselves as taking part in the competition. Then, the judges and the participants would roam the charity event with the participants not knowing who the judges are. Participants can only win if they are seen wearing their hats. You could also use bad shirts, pants or shoes as the focus of this competition as well. These kinds of events usually lend themselves to interesting pictures that can be used at future fund raising events.

Home Remedy For Diarrhea

Diarrhea is defined as loose, watery stools more than three times per day. Diarrhea can be a symptom of many health conditions such as flu, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, food poisoning or food allergies. Sometimes it is better to let diarrhea run its course and flush your system, but if it becomes persistent, there are multiple home remedies for diarrhea.


Diet


Consume a clear diet of foods such as chicken broth, Jell-O and clear fluids. This will allow your bowels a chance to rest. Slowly introduce rice, bananas, applesauce or yogurt as you start to feel better. Take probiotics or eat food with healthy bacteria such as yogurt. Lactobacillus acidophilus is a healthy bacterium that replenishes the good bacteria in the stomach.


Other food remedies that bind the bowel and slow the course of diarrhea include pectin, carob powder, barley, bananas and Swiss cheese.


Keep fluid levels high to replenish lost fluids and avoid dehydration. Fluids with salt or small amounts of sugar help replace glucose and minerals the body loses. You can add 1 tsp. sugar and a pinch of salt to 1 quart of water. A better-tasting mix can be made with ½ tsp. of honey or corn syrup, a pinch of salt and 8 oz. of water or juice. Gatorade is a good choice, as it contains glucose and electrolytes.


Avoid dairy products, beans, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. Also avoid foods that contain large amounts of carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, wheat products, apples, pears, peaches, prunes, corn, oats, potatoes and processed bran. Avoid carbonated beverages, as the gas they contain could aggravate diarrhea.


Bilberry


Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is a relative of the blueberry and grows in North America, Europe and northern Asia. Bilberry is also known as European blueberry, whortleberry or huckleberry. Bilberry helps diarrhea and can be eaten or made into extracts. Bilberry can also be made into tea.


Chamomile


Chamomile (Matricaria recutita, Chamomilla recutita) is used to treat gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea. There are two types of chamomile that are beneficial to health, German chamomile and Roman chamomile. German chamomile is more commonly used in the United States. The flowering tops of the chamomile plant make tea, liquid extracts, mouth rinse, capsules or tablets.

How Wear My Sony Walkman Mp3 Player While Running

MP3 players like the Sony Walkman can often hold hundreds of songs, provide skip-free playback and hours of enjoyment on a single battery charge. They're also small and lightweight, which are important to runners. But to make sure don't awkwardly handle the player while running, put some thought into best wear it.

1. Carefully examine your Walkman and all of the accessories that came with it. A few of Sony's MP3 players come with built-in molded plastic belt clips, and many come with an armband.


2. If your player doesn't have a clip or armband, shop for an armband or case from Sony (see resources below). Make sure the pocket is deep enough so that the player will stay inside while you run and also that it's located where the headphone cord doesn't interfere with your stride. 4. Consider upgrading to a Wireless Walkman. Wireless Walkmans are MP3 players in which the battery and data-storage units are built into a pair of small headphones, so there's nothing to carry (see resources below).

Attach A Timing Tag

Run a race with a properly attached timing tag.


Race timing tags, also called Chrono Track tags or D-tags, are used to track and record an athlete's pace to score a race. Timing tags are used for marathons, triathlons and other racing events as part of the timing system to determine each individual's finishing time. The tag is a thin, non-intrusive, weatherproof strip that is typically distributed along with the race bib. Proper attachment of the tag is necessary to receive a record. If you misuse, lose or choose not to wear your tag, you will not have a time record for the event.


Instructions


1. Detach the timing tag from your running bib.


2. Tear the directions off of the tag. Let the dotted "Tear Along Here" line guide you.


3. Loosen up the top part of your shoe laces. Insert the strip through the loosened criss-cross laces. Follow the "This Side Up" label so that it faces the top side.


4. Fold the strip gently in a circle and connect the ends of the tag using the adhesive tab.


5. Insert the clip into the hole and snap them together. The clip may not be provided; some timing tags only come with adhesives.


6. Tighten your shoe laces. Tug lightly to ensure that the tag is securely attached.

Avoid Getting Heartburn

Avoiding heartburn is easy if you know what triggers it. Finding the cause of any health problem will help you treat the problem. This article will give you steps to take to avoid heartburn and give you tips on soothe heartburn. Heart burn has nothing to do with your heart. Heartburn is a digestive problem that produces a burning sensation in your chest and may travel to your throat. Heart burn usually occurs after a large meal and is very uncomfortable once the burning starts. Acids are built up and travel to the esophagus to trigger the burning sensation.


Instructions


1. Avoid smoking. Smoking isn't only bad for your lungs, it will increase the chances of heartburn. The smoke irritates your throat. Smokers tend to get heartburn a lot easier than those who don't smoke.


2. Avoid drinking. Drinking alcohol and carbonated drinks such as sodas, will trigger heartburn. This is an additional reason for you to switch to water.


3. Avoid certain foods. Spicy foods and barbecue will trigger heartburn. Try to avoid these foods or eat just a little bit. Be prepared to soothe heartburn if you do decide to eat certain foods that trigger heartburn. Ketchup, barbecue sauce, hot sauce, pepperoni pizza, tacos and salami are some of the foods to avoid.


4. Avoid eating big meals before bedtime. Always sit up when eating, laying down in bed and eating is not recommended. Say good bye to that slice of mid-night pizza.

Distance Runner Improve Time

Strength Training


When distance runners look to improve their time, they must sometimes start with changing up their workout routine. Some weight training for distance runners typically involves the development of quick-twitch muscles for better anaerobic oxygen use. With stronger muscles in their legs, distance runners can reduce the impact that happens every time the foot hits the ground. They can also push off farther, creating bigger strides with each step. Even upper-body and core strength training can help distance runners maintain their posture while running.


Using leg-lift machines in the weight room could be helpful in developing strength in the legs by adding more weight and fewer repetitions for greater resistance. For upper body and core exercises, the Swiss ball can provide isometric exercises. Distance runners could also add more resistance while performing traditional pushups. By slowing down while returning to the floor during pushups or lifting one leg, more pressure will be added to the pectoral muscles.


Interval Training


Interval training is a technique that trains a distance runner's muscles to better absorb oxygen through anaerobic means. Interval training involves alternating running speeds throughout lap running. Runners should start with a slow jog for one lap. At the completion of that lap, runners would increase their speed to a fast jog for 1/4 of a lap and then a full sprint for half a lap. At the end of that lap, runners would gradually return to the fast jog for 1/4 of a lap, then a slow jog for another 1/4 lap. Runners should repeat this routine for at least one quarter of the distance the runner usually races.


Over time, the muscles learn to recover faster. The muscle fibers increase in size and are able to hold more oxygen and glucose because the body sends more blood to them as the pace and concentration of muscle use changes. With more oxygen and glucose in the muscle fibers, distance runners will manage hills better and perform small sprints when necessary.


Breathing Techniques


Adjusting breathing techniques can also help runners improve time. Distance runners usually learn to pace their breathing while running, but nervousness and excitement can cause the body to consume oxygen faster, even at relatively low patterns. Runners should practice relaxation techniques before running. They should also not sprint out of the gate as some runners do. That can cause the body to burn more oxygen than necessary, especially if they find themselves lagging by the middle of the race.


In the Resources below, Samuel Harvell suggests that deeper breathing techniques should be practiced if the runner's course involves hills. This can be done by learning to use the diaphragm to push more air into the lungs. By pressing your stomach out as you intake air, the extra oxygen can enter the blood system and hopefully make its way down to the calves and quadriceps that are pushing you up the hill. Knowing the course layout and practicing these breathing adjustments can ease any stress or nervousness that can come with the race.

Avoid Getting A Blood Clot While Flying

Economy class syndrome, also known as deep vein thrombosis or air travel thrombosis, is a blood clot that develops in a deep vein usually in the thigh or calf. 1. Stretch your legs by walking around the airplane every 90 minutes. This will keep your blood flowing.

3. Flex your legs while sitting every 30 minutes. This can be done by extending your legs and flexing and pointing your toes five times each. This will help to push the blood through your veins.

Analyze Wear On Running Sneakers

Runners need to check their shoes for unusual wear patterns.


Runners repeat the same movements in their exercise, more so than most other sports, in which the actions vary. The wear pattern on a runner's shoes tells a great deal about the runner's style and technique. Sports injury doctors will often ask to see the shoes of their patients to gain clues about the health of their running style. Runners wear their shoes out evenly, on the edge, the heel and forefoot, or just on the heel.


Instructions


1. Check the shoe for even wear across the heel and under the ball of the foot, and for slight wear under the big toe. Runners World magazine says that 80 percent of runners show this wear pattern. Even wear indicates a healthy running style and no need for special running shoes. However, if the runner is bigger or heavier than average, podiatrists recommend a shoe with more stability than the average shoe.


2. Check the shoe for wear along the outside edge and the upper part of the shoe. Runners with wear patterns along the edge of the shoe are supinators, or runners who don't roll their ankle inward as they run. The entire weight of the body comes down on the outside edge of the shoe. Runners who supinate instead of pronate develop stress fractures. They need shoes with extra padding that absorb more shock.


3. Check the shoe for wear on the heel, the ball of the foot and the big toe. A shoe with this wear pattern indicates a runner who doesn't use the outside of his foot. The runner rolls his ankles too much, so the inside of the foot bears too much of the load. Also, if he has too much rotation in his hips or knees, his shoes will wear in this pattern. He needs a shoe with substantial arch support, which will keep the foot from rotating too much toward the inside of the foot.


4. Check the shoe for wear on the heel and mid-sole only. Runners who over-stride, or stretch their stride out farther than is natural, wear their shoes down on the heel to the mid-sole with little wear around the ball of the foot. This wear pattern also indicates a runner who runs with her feet too far in front of her body. Runners who wear the heel down need shoes with extra heel support.

Normal cardio workouts don't stimulate the muscles into working as hard as HIIT programs, so the body burns less energy. Most HIIT programs have a work-rest ratio of 1:3. For example, you would have 1 minute of intense exertion to 3 minutes of rest before doing another set. The Tabata regimen has a 2:1 work-rest ratio.

For more than two centuries, Americans have generously contributed to organizations. According to the "Giving and Volunteering Signature Series," 89 percent of United States households give to charity as of 2001. In addition, donors contribute an average annual contribution of $1,620. The Council for Advancement and Support of Education forecast a small decline in university and college fundraising for 2009. However, charitable people are still donating to education. Students and faculty may host a variety of fundraiser to generate money.


Dance-A-Thon Fundraiser


Host a 24-hour college dance-a-thon. Participants can dance solo, in groups or as couples. Dancers pay a small participation fee to enter the competition. When planning the event provide the participants enough time to contact family, friends, colleagues and neighbors to sponsor them in the dance-a-thon. Host the event in an auditorium, community center or gymnasium. Hire a local DJ, borrow a CD player from the music department or load a couple of iPods with an assortment of music to play during the dance-a-thon. Offer a small prize for the last participants dancing. Advertise on the campus radio, social networking sites, local businesses and place flyers around campus.

How Does Parkinson's Disease Start?


The Disease


Parkinson's disease (PD) is actually one term for an entire group of motor system disorders. These conditions are caused by the loss of the brain cells that produce dopamine. Most people afflicted with Parkinson's Disease are over the age of 50 and suffer from four major symptoms: trembling in the limbs, such as a tremor in the hands or legs (sometimes face), stiffness of the limbs, slow movement (bradykinesia), and instability or impaired balance. The disease progresses over time, meaning that these symptoms worsen as the patient gets older. People afflicted with PD may eventually have difficulty with even simple tasks such as walking or talking.


No one is sure how or why Parkinson's Disease starts. Some scientists speculate that it is triggered by a combination of age and environmental factors, while others think it could be hereditary or a result of a genetic mutation. Men are affected more often than women.


Early Symptoms


Parkinson's Disease usually starts quietly. You may notice a slight tremor in your hands, or other people might notice that you are moving more slowly and carefully. These first symptoms are very subtle and begin gradually. They vary from person to person, so while one person afflicted with PD might notice his knees trembling as a first symptom, another might notice that her face, jaw, and neck feel very stiff. Still another person might feel dizzy and unbalanced before any other symptoms appear. Other early symptoms deal with emotional changes such as depression and difficulty sleeping.


Treatment


Parkinson's Disease is usually treated with a drug called Levodpa. Levodpa is actually a natural substance that is present in our bodies. When swallowed in pill form, it travels to the brain and is transformed into dopamine. Levodopa is combined with Sinemet, which is a drug that prevents the Levodopa from converting into dopamine until it is in the brain. While Levodopa works very well during the early stages of PD, the effectiveness of it tends to diminish as the disease progresses.

How Fast Does a Greyhound Run?


Greyhounds are amazing canines. The "cheetah" of the dog world, the greyhound can run faster than any other canine breed. Bred for speed, they are built for it like no other dog. Long, lean, with tremendous lung space and a huge heart, the greyhound can reach incredible speeds.


History


Greyhounds have an ancient history. No one actually can pinpoint the origin of the breed, but it is likely the dogs were brought from the Arabian peninsula around 900 A.D., where they had been developed as hunting dogs in the desert. They share the same background as the Saluki and other desert hunting dogs. They were used by nobility for their private hunts and have survived to this day due to the sport of racing.


Function


The greyhound is entirely built for running. Every line of its body is long and lean. The chest is deep, the spine flexible, the rear legs and haunches are incredibly powerful and the tail long and "rudderlike" to help the dog balance at high speeds. Top speed of the greyhound will reach 40 mph. The coat comes in all colors and is short and thin.


Identification


Males stand 28 to 30 inches high and weigh 65 to 70 lbs. Females stand 27 to 28 inches tall and weigh 60 to 65 lbs. They come in all coat colors. The body is totally different from other dog breeds--every inch of the dog is built for speed. They resemble other animals built to run--the cheetah, the thoroughbred, the Saluki.


Misconceptions


It is commonly believed that greyhounds are not good pet material as they are bred specifically for running. The fact is that once the animal's running days are over, they can make very good companions and friends. They are not particularly vigilant, as they were bred to run and not to guard. But they can make great family dogs as long as they get enough exercise.


Expert Insight


Having known several rescued retired race dogs personally, I can vouch for the greyhound's ability to become wonderful household pets. The greyhound, like almost all other dogs, has an inherent desire to love and please people, and it relishes the chance to live with and please its masters. The dogs are easily housebroken, love to be loved on, and are easy to keep as they have very little coats to maintain. As long as they are given enough exercise, they make excellent house dogs. One drawback is they do not have a long lifespan. Ten to 12 years is the longest you can expect them to live.

1. Stop and walk when you feel tired.


Run or jog a few times a week until you build up to a session of about 30 to 40 minutes. When you need to, stop and walk until you catch your breath, and then start again. Doing this will help keep you from being one of those people who show up for the first practice and never return.

When throwing a charity event, the goal is to minimize spending so that as much of the funds raised as possible directly impacts the charity. Advertising can be a costly expense, but throwing a charity event opens up many inexpensive and even free advertising doors to the event planner. Local business and media outlets are prone to assisting charity functions by supplying free airtime and ad space as well as by using their local clout to promote the event for you. Social networking also enables you to reach a broad spectrum of people at little to no cost.


Instructions


1. Write press releases detailing the pertinent information of the charity event, such as the date, place and time of the event, the cause the event is supporting and what the public can do to help.


2. Submit the press release to local newspapers, radio stations and television stations several weeks before the event. Revise the dates and add in any additional information as needed to the press releases and resubmit them to all of the media contacts a week or two before the event.


3. Design an ad that uses graphics and well-placed text to catch the eye of the readers and inform them of your event. This can cause the event to snowball, at no cost to you. You could also post Twitter updates that relay pertinent event details, such as the event date, charity information and ticket sales details. Ask your followers to retweet your posts to help spread the information. You can even come up with and use a Twitter hashtag for your event in your tweets, such as #fallcarnivalstjosephs.


9. Print postcards with the event and charity information and mail them to your member or donor database, if applicable. If you do not have an address database, choose local neighborhoods to target and send the postcards to selected addresses in the neighborhood.

How Record My Heartbeat

Your heartbeat can be recorded without any medical devices.


Your heartbeat can be effectively recorded by measuring your pulse rate--the number of times your heart beats every minute. The information gleaned from a pulse rate can be enlightening. It can reveal a pulse rate that is too high, which could indicate other health problems that need to be addressed. Accurately measuring your pulse rate can be done at home without any special medical equipment.


Instructions


1. Sit down and remain relaxed for five minutes. Being excited or moving in any way can increase your pulse rate. Relaxing will help you measure your resting heartbeat.


2. Find one of the several pulse points on your body. The two most commonly used for measuring pulse rate are on the side of your neck (the carotid artery) and the underside of your wrist (radial arteries).


3. Firmly place your index finger, middle finger and ring finger on the pulse point and wait until you can feel your heartbeat. You might need to move your fingers around the pulse area to find the pulse.


4. Use a watch or clock with a second hand and count how many pulse beats you feel within 10 seconds.


5. Multiply the number of beats by six to measure the pulse rate or heartbeat rate for one minute. For example, if you felt 11 heart beats during the timed 10 seconds, multiply by six to get 66 beats per minute. This is your resting pulse rate.

Break Up Kidney Stones

Staying hydrated can prevent kidney stones


Kidney stones are made up of salt and other minerals. They usually pass through in the urine on a regular basis. Most kidney stones go through the urinary tract unnoticed because they are normally quite small. Sometimes, however, they can get large enough to be noticed. This is often extremely painful as the larger kidney stones pass through the ureter, bladder and urethra. Kidney stones can also get stuck along the way, causing infections, increased pain and sometimes damage to the kidneys. Kidney stones can be broken up to prevent pain, infection and kidney damage.


Instructions


1. Drink at least two and a half liters of water every day. The water will help the kidney stone or stones to pass through your ureter, bladder and urethra with more ease than without enough water. Drinking three liters of water per day will be even better. See the resource box for a link to a one-liter bottle. Fill it and drink three times a day for the best results.


2. Exercise daily to help your body break up the kidney stones. If your kidney stones are smaller than 5 mm you can help remove them with exercise. Cardiovascular exercise is best. Take a daily walk outside or on a treadmill. Spend at least 30 minutes doing some cardiovascular exercises such as jumping jacks, push ups and crunches. Try an aerobic workout on television, or rent or buy an aerobic workout DVD like the one in the resource box.


3. Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a treatment that helps to break up kidney stones if they are stuck or are causing too much pain. During ESWT, the doctor uses a device that sends shock waves through the body to break up a kidney stone. ESWT is the most common procedure for breaking up kidney stones. Talk to your doctor about this option if you are interested.


4. Ureteroscopy is a procedure where a surgeon will pass a thin telescopic tube through the urinary tract to wherever the kidney stone is located. The surgeon then passes an instrument through the tube that breaks up the kidney stone or removes it completely. This procedure will only work if the kidney stone is already in the ureter.

High Blood Sugar Symptoms

High blood sugar, also known as hyperglycemia, occurs when there is a surplus of glucose in the bloodstream. It is a common condition among diabetics whose bodies cannot produce enough insulin to handle even normal glucose levels. High blood sugar may also be experienced by non-diabetics when they have ingested a significant amount of complex carbohydrates, sugar products or alcohol in a short span of time. Symptoms may range from mild to severe, and encompass everything from excessive thirst to falling into a coma.


Early Symptoms


In its very early stages, high blood sugar may yield no symptoms whatsoever. Non-diabetic individuals may frequently experience high blood sugar, particularly after a meal, and have no awareness of it. This is due to the fact the body produces an appropriate amount of insulin at the first sign of glucose in the bloodstream, and metabolizes the sugar into energy and fat before it can build up to a level where the individual may take notice of it. Some glucose sensitive non-diabetics may experience a brief "sugar high" before the insulin has started metabolizing the sugar; this is characterized by a rush of energy followed by a short crash. However, this is more a result of high blood sugar than a forerunner of diabetic symptoms.


Mild Symptoms


The first genuine symptoms of hyperglycemia typically include feelings of excessive hunger or thirst, as well as frequent urination. The thirst symptom tends to be the most dominant of the mild symptoms, with the individual craving water in particular. This is because as sugar builds up in the bloodstream it dehydrates cells, hindering them from correctly absorbing the sugar. If water is ingested by an non-diabetic individual with early symptoms of hyperglycemia it is usually enough to help the body process the sugar and return fairly quickly to a state of balance. In addition to increased hunger and thirst, the individual will experience dry mouth, blurred vision and a sudden onset of fatigue. It is fairly challenging for a non-diabetic individual to reach this level of hyperglycemia simply from food intake alone; however it is common for a diabetic to experience these symptoms if they have not regulated their insulin properly.


Serious Symptoms


If more sugar continues to be ingested or sugar levels go untreated, a diabetic may experience severe symptoms that are serious and potentially life threatening. It is very rare for a non-diabetic to experience severe symptoms. Serious symptoms of high blood sugar include hyperventilation, cardiac arrhythmia, acute dehydration, increased anxiety, slurred speech and in extreme cases a loss of consciousness or entry into a coma. Diabetics who have high unchecked glucose levels are also at risk of developing ketoacidosis, a serious blood condition that can be fatal if untreated.


Long-Term Symptoms


Some individuals who experience consistent high blood sugar may suffer long-term symptoms, such as weight loss, susceptibility to bacterial infections in the ears and reproductive organs, impotence and slow or incomplete wound healing. These symptoms are generally experienced by diabetics who do not manage their insulin properly or by individuals over the course of the onset of Type II diabetes before it is identified.

How Many Calories Burned Equal 1 Pound

Contrary to what you may have heard, the formula for weight loss is an easy one: you must burn more calories than you consume. Approximately 3,500 calories equals one pound. Losing Weight through Exercise


If your body requires 2,080 calories per day, by taking up moderate cycling five times a week, you will burn an additional 250 calories per day. At that rate, you will lose a pound in 14 days (assuming you don't increase you caloric intake).


Misconceptions


People who struggle to lose weight, yet closely monitor their caloric intake and output may be thwarted by hidden calories. Often, when tallying our daily intake, we neglect to consider any hidden calories we may have consumed, like those found in drinks, extra helpings, large portions and forgotten snacks.


Considerations


The best way to monitor your caloric intake is by writing down everything you put into your mouth. Keep a small journal with you at all times and record everything that you eat, including portions sizes (if you don't know, guess).
