How Many Calories Does Our Body Burn

Even without exercise, your body burns a significant amount of calories. While the recommended calorie intake for a woman and man is 2,000 and 2,500 respectively, your body may burn anywhere from 1,500 to 3,500 depending on your age, weight, how much exercise you get and your sex. The formula for calculating the amount of calories your body burns includes your basal metabolic rate (BMR), your activity level and the thermic effect of food.


BMR


Even breathing causes your body to burn calories. The amount of calories that your body needs just to exist is considered your BMR. Generally this accounts for 60 to 70 percent of your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE).


Thermic Effect of Food


Your body burns calories processing the food you eat. The calories burned from biting, chewing, swallowing and digesting are considered to be a result of the thermic effect of food and account for about 10 percent of your TDEE.


Activity Level


Your activity level is an important factor in determining how many calories your body burns. This may account for 15 to 50 percent of your TDEE. Use the Harris Benedict Equation (see resources) to help you determine your caloric expenditure.


Harris Benedict Equation


Using the Harris Benedict Equation, a sedentary person would multiply his BMR by 1.2 to estimate the amount of calories burned from daily activities, such as yard work, driving and sitting. But someone who exercises vigorously would multiply his BMR by 1.9.


Putting it Together


A 150-pound woman would burn about 2,080 calories per day. About 1,500 of these would account for her BMR, 150 calories for the thermic effect and the other 400 calories for her activity level.

Zoolights in Stoneham


From Thanksgiving to December 30th (except Christmas day), you can see the annual Zoolights at the Stone Zoo. In addition to the attraction of twinkling lights, you'll find the zoo's usual occupants: bald eagles, porcupines, lynxes, gray foxes and reindeer.


Santa Claus also visits the zoo from Thanksgiving through December 23rd. Children can take pictures with the jolly man.

Boston Common Frog Pond


This is America's oldest public skate rink, according to the Boston Common Frog Pond website. Couples or families can skate over the perfectly polished ice. The rink is open from November to the middle of March. There's a total of at least 100 days of seasonal skating. The Frog Pond is close by to Boston restaurants and shops. Or just enjoy the rink's snack bar, which has a full menu of hot and cold treats. Enjoy the sights and sounds of Charles Street, Downtown Crossing or Back Bay's Newbury Street.

Pilates is a form of exercise that has been around for years and is centered around the activation of the musculature of the core. It is one of the most popular exercise forms in society today. The following example is based on an average 165-lb. person. During an advanced workout, they can expect to burn 480 calories per hour. During an intermediate workout, they can expect to burn 390 calories per hour. During a beginner workout, they can expect to burn 270 calories per hour. 4. Be prepared for a medical examination. Your vital signs will be checked (blood pressure, weight, pulse and body temperature), your blood will be tested for adequate protein and you will be asked a series of medical questions to make sure you haven't participated in any high-risk behavior.


5. Donate plasma. After you have passed the examination, you will be allowed to make your first donation, called plasmapheresis. This will pass, and when you feel more normal, you can collect your first compensation.

How Should I Breathe When I Sing

Breathing correctly is important for proper singing.


Breathing incorrectly while singing can cause a host of problems for your voice, including vocal nodes, which are calluses inside your throat. A few techniques will keep this from happening; certified music teachers can teach you more.


Expand Your Diaphragm


Your voice comes from your diaphragm, which controls the length and volume of your sound. Expand your midsection as you slowly inhale to properly prepare your diaphragm for singing. If you hold your hand to your stomach, you should be able to feel it expanding as you inhale and deflating as you begin singing. Part of this process is standing up straight and opening up your hips a little to give you the proper room.


Controlling Your Breath


A controlled breath is paramount to proper singing technique. You should be aware of your inhalations, and know when you need them the most in any given piece. You need to take longer breaths before longer or more forceful notes, of course. Study the sheet music to know when these breaths should be taken. Hold your body firmly while opening up your throat as you inhale, keeping your shoulders down and expanding your ribs outward.


Warm Up


It's very important before you sing to perform warm up exercises in order to keep your vocal chords limber. The Vocalist recommends an exercise where you take a deep breath all the way down to your lungs, and then let it out in a slow and constant stream. Exhale slowly, he says, and "it may help to picture a candle out in front of you, and your breath is moving so slowly that the flame doesn't flicker as you exhale." Do this ten times, then five more, but with these five breaths, also emit an easy note, holding it constant as you exhale.

Gifts For Kids In The Hospital

Gifts brighten child's hospital stay


Children who face a hospital stay often have many fears which stem from isolation and unfamiliar surroundings. Gifts help bring a bit of home into the sterile environment of the hospital, making it a less scary place. Gifts may also provide needed distractions from pain or boredom. Be sure to check with parents, caregivers and the hospital to prevent providing a duplicate gift or a restricted item.


Gift restrictions


When choosing gifts for kids in the hospital, keep in mind that the hospital or ward may have restrictions concerning the types of items kids may receive. Some intensive care units restrict personal items almost entirely, while some offer a guided list of acceptable items. Restrictions on plants and flowers, the number of items allowed per child and the type of item often exist in the intensive care units (See Reference 1).


On a regular pediatric ward, fewer restrictions exist. Keep in mind the age and abilities of the child when choosing a gift. If you need ideas, some hospitals offer gift list suggestions that might help you in deciding on an appropriate hospital gift (See Reference 2). If no list exists for the hospital the child is in, try searching one of the many children's hospitals online for a gift list to help guide your choices. Also, many children's hospitals have gift shops that can help guide your choice.


Useful or decorative


Give useful or decorative items if the child's condition prohibits any activity. Items such as pajamas, socks, slippers, brushes and toiletries help even if the child remains unable to be active. A funny pair of socks or slippers and some new character pajamas may brighten their day while they are confined to a hospital bed.


Decorative items such as framed pictures or posters the child can look at or musical, moving figurines they can listen to provide some distraction from their environment. Character balloons may brighten their day and some balloons play music as well. Most hospitals prohibit latex balloons so be sure to purchase Mylar balloons if giving a balloon bouquet. A character styled "sippy" cup or sports drink bottle also provides a useful gift for most activity-restricted kids.


Low Activity


If the child can participate in low activity, give gifts to help entertain them while keeping them from becoming too active. Cuddly animals, dolls or stuffed popular characters provide something to play with and rest on. For older kids and teens, search for popular character pillows and throw blankets to brighten their hospital stay.


Books and magazines remain a popular low-activity choice. Puzzle books and colored pencils are another choice. Most hospitals allow movies, music and hand-held video games. A copy of the newest DVD or CD provides a happy boost to most kids. Be sure you provide all the batteries and equipment needed, such as a personal DVD or CD player unless you are sure one exists in their hospital room already. Hand-held games also provide hours of entertainment and come in a variety of styles and age or difficulty levels.


Active Play


Some kids must stay in the hospital for extended periods but remain quite mobile and active. For these kids, choose gifts that help fight off boredom with versatility and creativity. Shape sorters, blocks, stacking toys, play doctor kits and Legos provide versatile activity for younger children while preteens and teens appreciate journals, jigsaw puzzles, small model sets and miniature craft kits.


For an art-loving child of any age, put together a small, age-appropriate kit containing different writing instruments such as gel pens and markers, different types of paper, fun cutting scissors, shaped hole punches, glue sticks and stickers. Find a plastic tub with a flat lid you can decorate with their name in marker stencils or stickers. The flat lid also provides a useful lap desk surface in a hospital bed.

You don't want to overeat the day of the meet. Be sure to wake up early and have your breakfast at least two hours before the meet. Drink 12 to 16 ounces of water and eat a breakfast high in carbs. This could include pancakes, toast, waffles or a breakfast shake.

Lean proteins include chicken or turkey breast, shellfish and egg whites. Fattier protein sources include hot dogs, pork and dairy products.


Fats

How Get A Flat Stomach In Less Than A Month

By eating less and moving more you can lose one to two pounds a week healthily. So, if you have eight pounds of fat to lose, you can have a flat stomach in a month. Start by cutting your calories by 20 percent. Simply eat a fifth less than you usually do, then do a moderate cardiovascular workout, resistance training, and core training to get a flat stomach.


Cardio


There is a myth that doing very light cardio exercise will put you in a fat-burning zone. In truth, you need moderate-intensity cardio to raise your metabolism and burn more calories. However, if you do cardio too intensely you may injure yourself or be too tired to exercise daily. So choose an activity that you like and will be able to do daily, whether it's swimming, running, hiking, cycling, or using a cardio machine. Start with ten-minute bouts. Three 10-minute periods of moderate cardio are as effective as one 30-minute session. The key is to do cardio every day, or at least five days a week. Even on your off days, try to do some physical activity, like gardening or washing your car. You only have one month!


Core Training


You'll also need to do three to five days of core training. Begin your workouts with a five-minute, light-intensity cardio warm-up and then do two to three core exercises to work the abs, lower back, thighs, and glutes. Crunches are good exercises. Start with two sets of 10 reps and work up to three sets of 15. Pilates and yoga are also good for strengthening the core. The muscle you build in the core will raise your metabolism and tone the stomach area, but you will still need to do cardio and watch your eating to reduce belly fat.


Resistance Training


Resistance or strength training is the best way to build muscle. The more muscle your body has, the higher your metabolism. The higher your metabolism, the more fat and calories you'll burn every moment of the day, even while you sleep.


Three days a week of resistance training is enough to build lean muscle, with a day off in between workouts to recover. A full-body workout should include one exercise each for your chest, back, shoulders, and legs. Two sets of 20 repetitions of each exercise will build lean muscle without adding bulk, which is ideal for the short-term goal of getting rid of belly fat. You may wish to hire a personal trainer to teach you exercises for each body part, or you can try a resistance training course at a gym or take Pilates classes. Your gym may even have a circuit training routine set up for you to easily follow along with. Circuit training uses several machines that hit all the body's major muscle groups. Your body will adapt to a routine in three to four weeks, so for a month-long goal of getting a flat stomach, the circuit works just fine.


Be sure to take five minutes to cool down after any resistance training workout. Walk in place and take deep, even breaths to lower your heart rate.

Virginia's official GED website claims that taking this exam can help you earn more, enroll in university, lay the foundation for your career, set an example for others and build your own self esteem. The website further explains that many adults who didn't have a chance to finish high school still have an equivalent amount of knowledge as a high school graduate through their life, family and work experiences. "The GED Tests allow those adults to demonstrate academic abilities that are equivalent to those of high school graduates," claims Virginia's GED website. To take the GED in Virginia you need to be at least 18 years old and not enrolled in high school.


Instructions


1. Visit vaged.vcu.edu, which is Viriginia's authoritative website to prepare for and take the GED. Click on the link from the menu on the right side of the page that says "Study for the GED tests."


2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the link that says "GED Practice.com." This will allow you to take an unofficial practice test online.


3. Click on the first section of the Language Arts part of the exam, and work through the subsequent sections: Reading, Science, Mathematics and Social Studies. The entire exam will take you over seven hours.


4. Evaluate your score, which will let you know how intensively you'll need to study. Return to vaged.vcu.edu and click again on "Study for the GED tests." This page will show you several ways to study, including online, in actual classes or via television.


5. Pick a method of studying that suits you, your schedule and the score you got on your practice test. For example, if your score was very low, you might want to actually enroll in classes, which you can do through vaged.vcu.edu. If your score was high you might just want to brush up on concepts by studying online or via television.


6. Register for the GED test once you feel you can pass it with ease. A passing score for the GED is 410 per section, with an overall average of 450 with all five sections combined. Visit the website ged123.org to register.


7. Click on the blue "begin" button and click on the state of Virginia when the map of the United States appears.


8. Click "Continue" and type in your personal information, name and address. The website will assign you a test date. Print out the record of registration for the day of the exam.

6. Meet with clients and customers in a setting that will provide a professional atmosphere. Choose a place where your customer will be comfortable explaining what he wants for his event, and be sure to choose a location where conversation can be kept at a comfortable volume, such as no loud places, or places where you will receive constant interruption. Make detailed notes of the description of the event to be planned.


7. Find a price range for your clients. Call your vendors from your binder and find the businesses that have services that will fall into the price range of your clients. Bring all relevant information to a future meeting with your clients, and when something is approved for the event, book it immediately with the business that offers the service.


8. Keep the customers and businesses involved informed of any decision made throughout the process. Check with your clients to make sure that all aspects of the event are to their liking. Be sure to keep notes of the event and how it goes.


9. Have satisfied businesses and customers write up referrals and comments regarding your performance to add to your binder. Quality performance reviews will help to promote future business. Surfing

Luau feasts feature the popular dish Kalua Pork, fish, Mai Tai drinks, luau punch and fresh fruits. Entertainment is an important part of any luau. Japanese Influences


The Japanese first arrived in Hawaii during the mid-1800s to work on the Hawaiian sugar plantations. Although they hoped to find work and a better way of life, plantation life was not what they had envisioned. They worked long hours for very low pay, and endured harsh conditions under the hot Hawaiian sun. Although many Japanese immigrants eventually returned home, some chose to remain in Hawaii. By the twentieth century, Hawaiians had adopted a number of Japanese customs, including sumo wrestling, lantern ceremonies and bon dances. Several Japanese dishes, including tempura, teriyaki, musabi and sushi, have also become popular in Hawaii.

Assemble A Treadmill

Exercising on a treadmill can help keep you healthy.


Having your own treadmill can be very beneficial for losing weight and getting in shape. It can allow you to get your daily walk, jog or run in, even if the weather is not-so-nice. Other benefits of having your own treadmill, include reducing depression, improved sleep, and you can use it in the privacy of your own home. Many places will charge you a rather large fee to put the treadmill together and calibrate it for you, but assembling a treadmill can be done yourself, if you want to save some money.


Instructions


1. Pull the two lead wires through the console masts, and use two bolts and washers to secure them both in an upright position, on the sides of the console. Take care not to pinch the cable while doing this. Lift up the treadmill's running deck, to engage the lock latch at the bottom.


2. Take the console out of the box and put it to the side, within easy reach. Lower the running deck back down to the floor -- by stepping on the lock latch -- found on the left side, near the bottom.


3. Attach the roller end caps -- at the end of the main frame -- on both sides, using two screws and a screwdriver. Retrieve the console that you previously set aside.


4. Put the console onto the console masts. Use your screwdriver, two bolts and two flat washers, to attach the console to the left mast, then tighten the bolts lightly.


5. Lift the right side of the console up slightly, to connect the cables and press the wires into the mast carefully. Use two more bolts, flat washers and your screwdriver, to secure the right side of the console to the right mast, then tighten all of the bolts completely.


6. Attach any trim that is left on the treadmill or console, using screws and a screwdriver.


7. Plug the treadmill into a power source, and test it out. Ensure that your treadmill has a minimum of six feet of clearance behind it, three feet around it, and at least one foot in front. Place your feet on the side rails, and turn the treadmill on.

Breathe Correctly While Running

Breathing methods while running are very specific for different events. The requirements for different styles of running like aerobic running, marathon running or sprinting are not necessarily the same, even though they are the same sport. Remembering some basic yet important points will help you run at a faster pace with less effort and feel energized at the end of the run instead of gasping for breath.


Instructions


Basic Techniques


1. Count your footsteps while breathing. Do a 2-and-2 breathing pattern, which is inhaling while stepping your left foot, right foot then exhaling while stepping left foot, right foot. You can increase the pattern depending upon your pace and comfort. Count consciously until your breathing becomes natural with the stride.


2. Inhale and exhale slowly and quietly. If you can hear yourself breathe at what you thought was a comfortable pace and pattern, then you are probably running too fast. Slow down to get into a suitable pattern.


3. Take deep breaths by pushing your stomach out so the lungs can expand with more air. Deep breathing helps your torso and back to remain straight and it promotes an upright posture.


Running Styles


4. Follow a four-count breath for both inhaling and exhaling if you are an aerobics fitness runner. Breathe in through your nose and mouth and exhale through your mouth. Keep your rhythm steady so you don't pant. When you are picking up your pace, drop the count to three or two on alternate foot strikes.


5. Breathe in and out through your mouth if you are a marathon runner. Inhaling through your mouth means intake of more oxygen than the nose. Take short, shallow and comfortable breaths. Exhale through your nose. Regroup yourself once in a while with deep breaths.


6. Practice holding your breath if you are a sprinter or a short-distance runner in a 100-meter dash. Deep and heavy breathing in races overworks the diaphragm. A sore diaphragm reflects on the phrenic nerve, which originates in the neck and serves the diaphragm. This is the reason why some sprinters experience shoulder and neck pain after breathing heavily during a race.

Hotels Near The James Messer Fields In Tallahassee Florida

Frequent urination caused by the buildup of sugar in the blood can cause dehydration. Severe dehydration can cause a person with type 2 diabetes to develop a hyperosmolar nonketotic diabetic coma. This life-threatening condition often occurs when a person is not able to drink enough water to keep himself hydrated. The importance of drinking at least the minimum recommendations water daily cannot be overemphasized.


Overhydration


Overhydration is possible, but it is more common in athletes than in a healthy person or a person with diabetes. Overhydration prevents the kidneys from excreting excess water so the mineral content in the blood is diluted. This condition is called hyponatremia. Even though rare, this condition is another reason why it is important to consult a doctor about how much water should be consumed in an individual diabetic's diet.
