Adjust Bike Gears


Learning to adjust the gears yourself can really add to your enjoyment of cycling and probably save you some money in the process. However, if you feel like you're getting in over your head, take your bike to a qualified mechanic.


Instructions


Adjust the Front Derailleur


1. Hang the bicycle from a hook or bungee cord, suspended so the pedals and wheels can rotate freely, or use a repair stand if you have one.


2. Find the front derailleur: Starting with the left shift lever, follow the cable until it enters a mechanism near the front gears. This is the front derailleur.


3. Locate the derailleur adjusting screws,which are two small adjacent screws on top of the mechanism. One should be labeled "L" for low gear; the other should be marked "H" for high gear.


4. Turn the pedals forward and shift into the small chain ring. If the chain does not move into the small chain ring crisply, loosen the adjusting screw labeled "L" by one turn.


5. Loosen the "L" screw an additional turn if you still can't shift. If the chain comes off, tighten the "L" screw.


6. Shift into the big chain ring once you have set the inner limit. If the chain does not go into the big chain ring, loosen the "H" screw. If the chain goes too far and comes off, tighten the "H" screw.


7. Shift the rear derailleur. The chain should not rub the front derailleur when you're in the big ring in front and in the small cog in back. Likewise, it shouldn't rub when you're in the small ring in front and the big cog in back.


8. Fine-tune your adjustment as necessary.

9. Find the rear derailleur: Starting with the right shift lever, follow the cable to the pulley mechanism near the back gears.


10. Look for two screws. As with the front derailleur, there is one screw for Low and one for High.


11. Turn the pedals forward and shift into your smallest cog. If the chain doesn't shift into the smallest cog, loosen the "H" screw. If it overshoots the small cog, tighten the screw.


12. Shift into the largest rear cog. Again, if it doesn't shift, loosen the "L" screw. If it goes too far, tighten the screw.

Running Hair

Consider a runners hair band, which is different from an ordinary sweat band. Look for one with silicone trimming along the edges which helps hold the band in place against her hair. Only purchase hair bands made of wicking fabric, the product will usually mention this somewhere on the label. The wicking material allows the sweat under the band to evaporate rather than remain soaked to her head. These super-secure athletic hair bands come in a variety of fun colors, widths and styles at most major sport good stores for less than $15.


Nutritional Belt


The heart, lungs and muscles of a female marathoner accelerate faster but also recover more quickly than a non-marathon running woman. In order to maintain that 0 to 60 cheetah-like acceleration, she needs to properly refuel even while running. A nutrition belt secures around her waist and can hold up to six small bottles of water and two nutrient gel packs that contain carbohydrates and electrolytes. It may look a little awkward, but few women, or men, can safely run 10 or more miles at a time without properly refueling. Any specialty running store or online running company sells nutrition belts designed specifically for women at a cost of approximately $40.

Most people affected with diabetes (types 1 and 2) experience frequent thirst. They need to be careful about staying hydrated. Drinking healthy fluids such as water is only part of staying hydrated for diabetics. There are additional lifestyle changes that must be made.


Sodium and Dehydration


Although the body does need a modest amount of sodium chloride (or salt), ingesting too much of it can cause dehydration and high blood pressure. Ingesting too much salt causes water retention. However, the water is being held away from the cells that need it, resulting in dehydration. Limiting salt intake is a simple lifestyle change that can be as easy as not adding extra salt to food and maintaining a low-sodium diet.


Effects of Heat on Hydration


Not only is heat associated with dehydration, but it also dries out the skin, which can be a problem for diabetics. Not only should excessive heat from sunlight be avoided, furnace heat should be minimized as well in order to stay hydrated.


Hydration through Eating


A good source of water rich foods is any fruit or vegetable. Whole grains and legumes that have been soaked and cooked are also excellent sources. Fruits and vegetables that are especially rich in water include melon, pineapple, grapes, citrus fruits, apples, and tomatoes.


Hydrating Beverages


As opposed to alcohol, caffeinated beverages, carbonated fluids such as sodas, and sports drinks, diabetics should aim to drink healthy liquids: fresh juices with very little or no added sugar, fruit and vegetable smoothies, and water. Drinking large amounts of less healthful liquids can actually cause dehydration and may not quench thirst.


Moderating Water Intake


There is actually such a thing as drinking too much water, and doing so can be dangerous for diabetics. If you drink so much water that you feel bloated or start aching, you have had more than enough. When more water than is needed is ingested, the body's blood volume increases, which puts stress on the heart and blood vessels. Also, the kidneys will have to work harder to filter the excess blood, which can cause damage over time.

1. Warm up. Do cardio for 10 minutes to warm up your muscles. This is important in a workout to build muscles. When you warm up your muscles before an intense workout, not only will you avoid injury, you will also be able to sustain the workout longer. Warming up is part of the preparation to build muscles.


2. Lift weights. Choose weights that you can carry comfortably and lift between 8 to 12 reps. When you can lift weights past 12 reps, it means that it's too easy for you, while less than 8 reps means that it's too heavy for your body. Having the right weights for your body is critical to building muscles safely.


3. Do a bench press. Bench presses are great for building muscles because they have noticeable results, especially in your biceps and triceps. Sit on a bench and grab on to dumbbells on each hand. Lay back and bring the dumbbells perpendicular to your chest. Extend your arms and raise the dumbbells overhead. Then, lower arms to starting position.


4. Increase your repetitions. To build muscle, you should challenge them progressively by increasing repetitions. If you constantly do a certain number of repetitions, your muscles will get used to this weight and will not increase in size. Challenging your muscles by increasing repetitions will introduce new stress to them, compelling them to build more to handle it.


5. Rest every other day. You need to let your muscles rest for them to start building themselves. Muscles build when they repair themselves from the stress brought upon them by your exercise routine. Resting will also help prevent over-fatiguing your muscles, allowing you to work out more to build them.

1. Go faster, harder and longer every time. Even if it's only by 30 seconds or 100 yards, pushing yourself beyond yesterday's limit is the fastest way to build exercise endurance. If increasing the difficulty of your exercise every workout is too much for your body, increase the challenge on a weekly basis.


2. Work on your heart rate. Exercise that encourages your heart to get pumping helps increase your physical stamina. Incorporate cardio routines into your weekly workouts. For example, walking is great exercise, but it doesn't cause your heart to beat much faster. A brisk walk or run is better.


3. Cross-train. You can build incredible exercise endurance by mixing up your routines. Doing the same thing every day is one of the main reasons people are unable to build endurance. Swim laps one day, play basketball the next day, and go for a long run on day three. Not only will this increase endurance, but it will also keep you in love with physical fitness.


4. Find the hills. Not only is flat land boring, but it doesn't always push you to work harder. You can run for miles on even land. Use hills in your outdoor workout or program them into the panel if you're using an indoor machine. And always remember to take the stairs instead of the elevator.


5. Cut the carbonation. Carbonated drinks like soda and fizzy water decrease your ability to get maximum breathing while exercising. You will not build endurance without plentiful oxygen and proper breathing.


6. Stretch. Your muscles will cramp and recoil if you don't stretch them out after physical activity. The more agility you have, the easier it is to build endurance.

Types of Weeds


The method of attack on weeds will vary according to the kind of weed. There are annual and perennial weeds. Annuals are primarily grasses, and they seed prolifically, which gives them the advantage of numbers. Perennial weeds often will have rhizomes that will overwinter and produce new plants in warmer temperatures. Annuals are not that hard to get rid of if you remove them before they seed. Perennials are more difficult. A systemic herbicide is necessary to achieve control in the roots and rhizomes.


Boiling Water


There is really nothing fancy about the boiling water method. The idea is to basically cook the weeds. The extreme heat will destroy the cells and plant tissue, and the weed will die. The boiling water method needs to be applied when pets and children are not near. The water could splatter a curious pet and scald him. As soon as the weed has cooled down, it is safe to allow the pet back outdoors.


Vinegar and Salt


Vinegar contains acetic acid, which is a powerful caustic fluid. It will cause burns on the plant. When salt is added to the mixture, the sodium draws out the moisture in the plant. Unfortunately, the salt will stay in the soil and make it unsuitable for other plants unless it is leached out with quantities of water. The vinegar and salt combination is powerful and works without harming pets. In a quart spray bottle, put 1 cup vinegar, 1 tsp. liquid soap and 1 tbsp. salt. Fill the rest of the way with water and spray the weeds.


Cornmeal


This product is a bit hard to believe in, but Iowa State University did a study that proves cornmeal is a pre-emergent weed killer. When cornmeal is spread across a garden bed, it prevents weed seeds from germinating. The cornmeal was broken down into its components and tested. The protein portion of the grain was the active ingredient. It is not effective in all weed species but works well against the annual grasses and some broad leaf weeds.

How Long Should Someone Run On A Treadmill

Treadmill training often is portrayed as a foul-weather alternative to outdoor running. But most treadmills have a slightly cushioned track that provides a lower-impact surface. Unless you have a smooth wood-chip trail available, you're unlikely to find a better running surface. Treadmills allow you to train--even for a marathon--with less chance for hip, knee, ankle, leg and foot injuries that come with training on harder surfaces. And for runners looking only to get a workout, there is virtually no disadvantage to using a treadmill for a long period of time.


Getting Acclimated


Before planning a long (30-minutes or more) treadmill run, take time to learn how the treadmill works, especially stop the treadmill. Unlike outdoor running, if you get tired or your shoelace comes untied, you can't just stop running. Most treadmills have a "Pause" and a "Stop" button that cause the moving track to slow gradually. There's also usually an emergency stop feature, often as part of a clip you can attach to your clothing. If you stumble or feel lightheaded, for example, you can stop the track immediately. It's also important to learn run with your normal stride on a treadmill. Plan a series of three- to five-minute runs so that you get accustomed to starting your run, getting into a normal stride at workout pace, maintaining pace for a while, then gradually slowing down. For a five-minute run, add a couple of "hills" by raising the incline of the treadmill. Just as in outdoor running, you also might need to slow your pace as you tackle the incline.


Pacing


During outdoor running, you might unconsciously slow as you get tired, but treadmill training allows you to maintain a consistent pace. You also can program the treadmill to create interval training. For example, run a six-minute mile pace for two minutes, then slow for a minute to eight-minute miles, then back to six-minute miles and so on.


The treadmill also can provide easy runs, which are helpful for runners of every level a day or two each week. Just as you slow as you get tired, if you're trying to run easily, you probably will speed up gradually toward your normal workout pace. Setting the treadmill at a slower speed forces you into an easy run.


Maintain Your Form


Don't run differently on a treadmill than you do outdoors. It's easy to look down at the control panel---checking the time or distance, watching the calories click by, studying the run program. Work hard to keep your chin up, your hips square to the front of the treadmill and your stride at its normal length. Make sure your foot plant is the same as it would be on the road.


Weather Conditions


You won't have rain or freezing cold or tropic-like heat to contend with, but treadmill training does have its own peculiarities. The temperature is likely to be at comfortable room levels, which is warm for a long run. You won't have any breeze to help you cool off either. Have an extra shirt---and if your treadmill is at home, even an extra pair of shorts---to put on when you start sweating. And keep some water handy to stay hydrated. That's what the pause button is for.


Road Conditions


The terrain won't change on a treadmill unless you change it. Most treadmills can be programmed to include "hills," and you probably can program the treadmill for the pace you want to climb the hill. But, with few exceptions, treadmills cannot be programmed to go "downhill." If you are training for a long race, you will need to find another way to practice downhill running. In addition, treadmills cannot provide you with the wind resistance you will encounter in outdoor running. One way to mimic this resistance is to elevate the treadmill slightly, even for what would be termed flat conditions.


Boredom


The scenery never changes on the treadmill. If you're running in your home instead of at a fitness facility, you won't even have the advantage of other people moving about. Fight boredom by watching television---even a movie---or listening to music.

There's nothing like painful blisters to ruin your backcountry hiking trip, but you can avoid them by taking these measures.


Instructions


1. Break in hiking shoes or boots well before your hike, wearing the same shoe-sock combination you will use on the trail.


2. Wrap your blister-prone spots with athletic tape or duct tape before you start hiking, if you know you're likely to have a problem. Put the tape directly on your skin; when you're done hiking, take off your boots and pull off the tape immediately. The heat and sweat from your feet will make it easier to remove.


3. Soak any developing hot spot (an area that is irritated from rubbing) in cold water or air-dry it until the spot cools.


4. Apply a patch or doughnut of moleskin to the hot spot or cover it with tape. Theories about the pros and cons of patches, doughnuts and tape vary. Experiment and find what works best for you.


5. Use foot powder and change into a dry pair of socks before you put your boots or shoes back on and continue hiking.

How Long To Wear Compression Garment From Lipo

Liposuction is often a cosmetic procedure designed to improve your physical appearance, not an emergency or necessary procedure. It is, however, important to remember that liposuction is still surgery. So if your doctor recommends wearing a compression garment after surgery, how long should you wear it?


What Compression Garments Do


Your doctor will recommend you wear a compression garment following liposuction. After the surgery is complete, trace amounts of blood-tinged anesthetic will remain beneath your skin. Compression garments force your body to absorb this solution into the bloodstream so that it can be expelled from your system without causing infection or damage. Wearing the compression garment also increases blood circulation through the healing areas, minimizes post-surgery swelling, force harmful fluids from your body and significantly speeds up the healing process. The garment provides support to the healing portion of your body and fits your skin into its new contours as your body adjusts to the change in shape.


How Long You Will Wear One


Depending on how invasive your procedure was, and your doctor's advice, you may only need to wear a compression garment for the first stage of recovery. Stage one is generally the first two weeks after surgery. You may, however, need to wear one until the end of the second stage of recovery. Stage two of recovery can last anywhere from two to eight weeks. If your doctor asks you to wear a compression garment for both stages of recovery, you may need to obtain both a stage one garment and a stage two garment. You will have to wear the garment night and day for as long as your doctor recommends.


Open-Drainage Surgery


If your doctor decides to perform an open-drainage surgery, you may not need to wear the compression garment for the same length of time. In the open-drainage technique, the tiny incisions that your doctor made to perform the liposuction are not stitched closed as they normally would be. This way, when a proper compression garment is applied after surgery, most of the blood-tinged anesthetic that lies just beneath your skin is forced out within the first 24 hours after surgery. If your doctor decides that open-drainage surgery is the best choice, then you may only have to wear a compression garment for three to six days.


Non-Medical Garments


You can buy non-medical compression garments at a local store. You may be tempted to wear one of these rather than the compression garment your doctor recommends. Be aware that choosing the right garment will have a big impact on how quickly you heal. Non-medical garments can prolong healing time, worsen swelling in affected areas, or even increase physical discomfort. Non-medical garments are not meant to be worn for long periods of time. The shape can become warped or the garment can lose its elasticity. If that happens, you will lose the compression effect that is necessary for your body to heal faster.

Inspections

Dairy


Other than the milk that is used in smoothies, dairy products have other uses in high-protein and high-carb diets. Yogurt, for example, is a dairy product that is also high in carbohydrates. Even a cup of plain, fat-free yogurt has about 19g of carbs in it. Cottage cheese, on the other hand, is high in protein and low in carbs. A way to get a high-protein and high-carb meal is to combine the two of these. Strictly High Carb


There are some people who choose to take the path of the high-carb diet. Vegetarians, for example, do not eat meat which takes away a lot of their protein options. They eat foods like rice, beans, fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, whole grains and tofu to pick up the slack.

Making Your Own


Because your body metabolizes glucose from the foods you eat, it is not necessary to ingest it. If you are diabetic and do not have any glucose tablets available, or would like to save money, you may want to have a substitute that is easy to make from ingredients you probably already have on hand. Research done at Binghamton University and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1998 states that brain function, especially as it relates to learning and retaining information, improves when glucose levels are higher (but not too high). If you are cramming for a test or learning new job skills, eating whole-grain bread products just before can help, or you can take a spoonful or two of the following solution. This solution is also useful for feeding puppies or other animals that are failing to thrive until they are able to feed on their own.


This recipe is not recommended to use intravenously to substitute for the 50 percent dextrose (glucose) solution used by medical professionals. Use it as an occasional energy supplement or in place of cooking glucose in recipes that call for it. It should metabolize quickly, so you can keep it on hand for blood sugar dips that can't be managed by simply eating balanced meals. If you have diabetes, consult with your health care provider before using this solution for any reason. The ingredients for a quart are simply 1 qt. filtered or distilled water, 1/4 cup honey, 1/2 tsp. sea salt (or table salt if sea salt is not available) and 1/2 tsp. baking soda. Stir these together until everything is well dissolved and store it in an airtight container.

Sony's PlayStation 3, or PS3, can output video in a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio. The 4:3 setting produces a boxy image, and the 16:9 setting produces a more elongated, cinema screen-like image. The 4:3 aspect is only available in standard definition, or SD, whereas the 16:9 aspect can be obtained in SD and high definition, or HD. If you're using an older, more boxy-looking television, you should adjust the PS3 output to 4:3 to make the image fit. Likewise, if you're using a more recent flatscreen, you should make adjustments so the PS3 output is 16:9 and fits the TV.

1. Choose "Settings" on the PS3, then "Display Settings" and "Video Output Settings." Press the "X" button. Choose "HDMI" as the "Type of Connector," if you're using an HDMI cable. Press the forward arrow button and choose "Automatic." The output will be automatically set at 16:9 and fit a flatscreen.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned a number of substances to enhance people's safety. It has put these banned substances into different categories including drugs; medical devices; biologics, blood and vaccines; animal and veterinary; cosmetics and radiation-emitting products. Some substances are banned for the population at large, while others are banned for specific groups, such as athletes.


Ephedra


Ephedra is a substance found naturally in botanicals and its main active ingredient is ephedrine, which is a compound similar to amphetamine. Ephedrine can stimulate the heart and nervous system powerfully. Ephedra was a major ingredient in many dietary supplements intended to increase energy, enhance athletic performance and promote weight loss. The FDA officially banned ephedra on April 12, 2004, following studies that showed it posed unreasonable risk of injury or illness to consumers. The substance increases the risk of stroke and heart problems.


Flavored Cigarettes


Another thing the FDA has banned is flavored cigarettes. Flavoring makes cigarettes taste like different products, such as candy, clove and fruits. The principle behind the ban was the fact that flavored cigarettes encouraged young people to start smoking. According to the FDA, young people were two times more likely to see the adverts for flavored cigarettes, and the pleasant taste lured them to start using the products. The drugs banned for use in sports are grouped into different categories, including stimulants, anabolic agents, diuretics and urine manipulators, street drugs, anti-estrogens, peptide hormones and analogues, as well as substances banned for specific products. Famous Formula One Race Car Numbers

Formula 1 cars currently have a regimented numbering system.


Unlike other forms of motorsports such as NASCAR or IndyCar, teams and drivers typically aren't free to choose the numbers of their cars. Instead, numbers are allocated based on the placement of drivers in the World Driving Championship the previous season; the team with the defending champion is given numbers 1 and 2, with other teams receiving numbers based on their position in the Constructor's Championship. Instituted before the start of the 1996 season, this change eliminated famous associations between Formula 1 teams and their car numbers.


Number 0


In 1993 and 1994, Damon Hill drove the 0 car in the Formula 1 championship, becoming only the second driver in Formula 1 history to take the number. The first was Jody Scheckter in 1973. Hill's Williams teammate Nigel Mansell won the championship in 1992, but left for CART racing in America before the 1993 season, leaving Williams to receive the numbers of 0 and 2. Hill's teammate Alain Prost retired after winning the title that season, again leaving Williams with the 0 and 2 numbers for the 1994 campaign.


Number 5


Mansell became associated with driving the "Red Five" car during his initial stint with Williams. Mansell made the change to a red number scheme on his car in 1985, after spectators had trouble differentiating the white paint scheme of his number from that of the 6 car, driven by teammate Nelson Piquet. Mansell would continue to race the 5 car after moving to CART in 1993.


Numbers 27 and 28


When Ferrari driver Scheckter lost the 1980 championship to Alan Jones of Williams, Ferrari lost the numbers 1 and 2 to Williams and inherited the numbers 27 and 28. Ferrari would use these two numbers until 1995, with the exception of 1990, when reigning world champion Prost was on the team and their cars used the numbers 1 and 2. The 27 car would be associated with Gilles Villeneuve in particular, as he was the first driver to race with it for Ferrari and he would carry it until his death in a practice crash at Zolder in 1982. The last driver to race with the 27 for Ferrari was Jean Alesi, in 1995.


Number 13


The number 13 is conspicuous by its absence in the lineup of current Formula 1 car numbers. It is considered to be "unlucky" and is skipped in the allocation of car numbers. A 13 car has only raced in one official Formula 1 race, when Moises Solana finished 11th out of 11 classified cars in the 1963 Mexican Grand Prix. Divina Galica failed in her attempt to qualify for the 1976 British Grand Prix with a 13 car, with a qualifying time that left her two spots out of the starting grid.

Beginning Steps for All Olympic Gymnasts


1. Begin training at a young age--like six or seven. Of course, you're not reading this article if you're 6--this advice is more for parents with kids who show real interest in the sport.


This is especially important for girls, since a woman's career in gymnastics is so short. Most female gymnasts retire from competition by their early 20s.


2. Find a place to train and a coach. If you are serious about making the U.S. Olympic team, you need a top-notch facility with state of the art equipment, and a personal coach with national and international experience. You are going to have to wake up before dawn, go to sleep when it's still light, miss all the junk food kids eat and forget about growing with a normal childhood. Becoming an Olympian is probably harder than getting into Yale or Harvard--only a select few get on an Olympic gymnast team.


3. Join a local gymnastics club and USA Gymnastics (the national governing body for gymnastics in the United States). You must be a member of USA Gymnastics to compete in their sanctioned events, including the U.S. Olympic Trials.


4. Place well at the U.S. Championships during an Olympic year. This will account for 40 percent of your score going into the U.S. Olympic Trials-Gymnastics (the other 60 percent of your score will be earned at the Trials).

5. Go to the U.S. Olympic Trials-Gymnastics, and place first or second. This will give you a tentative berth on the Olympic Gymnastics Team. Or at least do well enough to secure yourself an invitation to the Olympic Selection Camp.


6. Attend the Selection Camp. If you placed in the top two, at the Olympic Trials, you just need to prove that you are ready for competition. If you are one of the others, you are going to have to fight hard to snag one of the four remaining spots.


7. Work hard and keep a positive attitude. They will be looking for alternates as well as full members, so you never know when you could be called up.

How Is A Carbureted Atv Impacted By Altitude

Your ATV may run differently at higher altitude.


If you are planning to take your carbureted all-terrain vehicle (ATV) from an area near sea level to a high-altitude area, such as the mountains, you can expect to experience some issues unless the carburetor is adjusted. The high altitude causes the mass and density of the air to change, affecting the fuel mixture. Fuel mixture changes can cause your ATV to run poorly or consume unusually high amounts of fuel.


Air and Altitude


Altitude is determined by how far you are above sea level. Low altitude areas are considered be areas that are at slightly above to even somewhat below sea level. High altitude is typically considered to be areas over 8,000 feet above sea level. The higher you go in altitude, the lower the air density and air pressure because fewer oxygen molecules are in the air around you.


Carburetors


All combustion engines run by burning a mixture of air and fuel to generate power. In fact, engines do not burn liquid gasoline at all. The fuel has to mixed with air and vaporized into a gas before the engine is able to use it to generate power. In a carbureted engine, the carburetor adjusts the fuel mixture and delivers fuel to the combustion chambers. Carburetors periodically have to be adjusted for a certain range in order for the vehicle to run properly. Typically, this occurs when the climate of an area is drastically different from the climate where the vehicle is normally used and runs well.


Fuel Mixtures and Altitude


While minor changes in altitude should not have any affect on the vehicle, major changes are almost guaranteed to affect the fuel mixture. When you dramatically change altitude without adjusting the carburetor, your vehicle's fuel mixture contains significantly less air than it did at lower altitudes. You can expect to have to adjust the jetting on your ATV's carburetor to compensate for the changes in the fuel-air mixture. The jets on your carburetor determine how the fuel-air mixture is mixed and delivered to your engine. Potential problems include high fuel consumption, rough idling, rough running, loss of power, knocking, pinging and even overheating.


Gasoline


Your ATV's carburetor is not the only thing that may be affected by the altitude. Whether you are bringing a vehicle from a low-altitude area to a high-altitude area or vice-versa, you will need to take into consideration what type of gasoline you are using. Gasoline in different areas may be formulated differently. You may have to adjust your ATV's carburetor to accommodate different gasoline mixtures and consistency if you do not bring fuel with you.

Home Relief For Shingles

Shingles result from herpes zoster (also known as varicella zoster), the virus that causes chicken pox. Anyone who has had chicken pox is susceptible to shingles, as the virus lies dormant in your system and can re-emerge during adulthood. Shingles causes painful, itchy red blisters over an area of the skin that can flare up for one to three weeks at a time. Fortunately, there are at-home remedies you can use to help control the pain and itching associated with this condition.


Before the Blisters


Before a rash and blisters actually appear, you may experience pain and tenderness that typically lasts for three days to one week before blisters begin forming. The best way to relieve the pain before the blisters set in is to use over-the-counter pain relievers, such as Tylenol or Advil. Also, according to Mother Nature.com, boosting your vitamin C and B-complex supplements will bolster your immune system against the virus and help rebuild damaged nerves, as the shingles virus attacks nerve cells, the cause of most of the pain associated with the condition.


When Blisters Set In


It may seem counter-intuitive, but leaving the blisters alone can be the best thing to do, and applying creams and ointments can actually slow your skin's natural healing process. However, rubbing ice cubes on the area can soothe the itching and pain.


Apply calamine lotion to the skin around the affected area. Keep the lotion in your fridge until you are ready to use it, as the coolness of the lotion will better soothe pain.


If the pain of the blisters is simply too intense, you can apply a topical, analgesic paste that will help ease the pain. Take two or three aspirin tablets, crush them thoroughly and mix with 1 to 2 tbsp. of rubbing alcohol to form a paste. Apply it gently to the blisters. However, if the blisters are open and erupting, do not apply this mixture, as the alcohol will only cause more pain and burning.


Try taking a "starch" bath to relieve the pain and help you relax before bed. Run a cool bath---not hot, as the heat will irritate the blisters---and add a handful of cornstarch or colloidal oatmeal to the mix. Soak for as long as needed to help temporarily relieve the pain.


Always keep your blisters dry and resist the temptation to scratch them. Occasionally dab them with hydrogen peroxide or an antibiotic ointment if they appear to be getting infected. However, Neosporin and neomycin, two common antibiotic ointments, act as skin sensitizers and can induce more pain if added to the blisters; dermatologists recommend using polysporin or erythromycin instead.

Build A Canoe Shelf

Turn your unfloatable canoe into useful bookshelf.


Old wooden canoes can be turned into stylish bookshelves. The holes or punctures in the canoe may not be good for boating, but they will add character to a book shelf. Building a canoe shelf from scratch can be time consuming and arduous as you must bend a lot of the wood yourself for the project. Using an old canoe that cannot be repaired for boating cuts down on material cost and the time that must be devoted to the project.


Instructions


1. Remove the old seats, metal and other hardware from the canoe, so you are left with the wooden frame. Sand the entire canoe so there is only bare wood. Wipe the canoe with a damp cloth and let dry.


2. Apply polyurethane to the canoe and let dry according to instructions.


3. Cut the bottom of the canoe off, one third of the entire length from the end. The canoe shelf should be able to stand vertically by itself on the end you just cut.


4. Stand the canoe vertically on a piece of plywood so you can trace around the bottom of the canoe, and cut a plywood bottom. Screw through the plywood and into the canoe.


5. Use your cardboard, scissors and pencil to measure the width and depth of the shelves. Cut the cardboard to the size the shelf needs to be and use it to trace the shelf on the plywood. Cut the shelf out of the plywood with your jig saw. Repeat this process until you have the desired number of shelves.


6. Screw through the outside of the canoe into the plywood shelves. Use four evenly spaced screws for each shelf.

Bone spurs, or osteophytes, are a bony growth formed on normal bones near the joints and cartilage that can cause discomfort and pain. Individuals from all walks of life, particularly athletes and individuals who are generally active, can develop bone spurs. The most common places to find bone spurs are usually the shoulders, spine, hands, feet, hips and the knee; however, they develop in other areas of the body as well. Stress created by strenuous and repetitious activities, like running, jogging and dancing can cause bone spurs in the knees.


Causes


Bone spurs can be compared to a callus on the foot. When excessive stress, continual rubbing and excessive stretching of the knee's joints and tight ligaments cause tremendous amounts of pressure over time, the body attempts to protect or repair the area by forming bone spurs in the knee. Bone spurs can also form as a result of calcium build-up in a manner similar to arthritis. Other factors responsible for the development of bone spurs include age and the overall condition of your health. Older people and those who are overweight may also be more susceptible to bone spurs.


Pain from knee bone spurs is caused by the spur rubbing against the nerves. The pain can range from mild to excruciating, depending on the location of the bone spur and the pain may or may not occur intermittently. Some individuals even have bone spurs in their knees, while experiencing no pain or symptoms at all.


Natural Remedies


When you experience moderate pain from knee bone spurs, relief can usually be obtained by using over-the-counter remedies and medications or homeopathic treatments and natural herbs. A very effective home remedy is to place a clean cotton cloth or a cheesecloth, dipped in hot linseed oil, on the affected area and allow to soak under a heating pad for a couple of hours as needed. Acute pain and discomfort could also be relieved by using dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), chamomile, horsetail tea, curcumin or arnica. As a preventative measure, calcium supplements and a good exercise program are always recommended. However, these treatments will only help to alleviate the pain of the bone spur. Professional medical treatment by a qualified doctor is the only way to remove a bone spur entirely.


Long-term Treatment


A good diet, exercise program and homeopathic remedies are often all that are needed to manage knee bone spurs. With these alternative treatments, the pain may go way and if the bone spur remains asymptomatic, removal may not be necessary. Depending on your lifestyle, your doctor may also recommend steroid treatments at the knee, if the spur is in its early stages. This can help alleviate pain and stop the growth of the bone spur. When pain is chronic, non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be prescribed. However, when your range of motion is affected and pain is intolerable, your doctor may recommend surgery as a last resort. Surgery is the only way to actually remove the spur. It involves a procedure in which you go under anesthesia while the doctor scrapes the bone, removing the spur. Physical therapy and rehabilitation is usually required after surgery to remove a knee bone spur.

The New York Marathon started with just 127 runners in 1970; in 2012, more than 47,000 competitors ran. On the subject of weird records, charity fundraiser Lloyd Scott is a world-class contender in "slowest runner" category.
