Gymnast Train

How Does a Gymnast Train?

Starting Young

Gymnasts must start training at a young age. This is primarily done for the sake of preserving the natural flexibility that the human body has in childhood but later loses because of lack of use and the binding effects of rapid muscle growth during puberty. The other advantages of training gymnasts early (starting at about 5 or 6 years of age) are that children have more time to learn and practice their skills and have an easier time overcoming instinctual fears connected to some of the risky or uncomfortable acrobatic maneuvers.

Standard Workout

A standard gymnast's daily training and workout schedule is designed around body health, conditioning and event training. This workout will start with a warm-up and stretching session to prevent potential injuries by loosening up and warming the muscles. The rest of a day's training will consist of event skills training and practice, either followed or preceded by a shorter strength training workout. Flexibility is maintained through event skills training and stretching.

The difference in workout and practice regimen between casual and more serious competitive gymnasts tends to be quantitative rather than qualitative. Casual athletes may practice as little as a few hours multiple times a week, whereas a gymnast training for national competitions or aiming as high as the Olympics will likely spend upward of 50 to 60 hours a week in the gym.

Compulsory Vs. Optional

Young children in gymnastics will train and practice on all forms of events, whereas older gymnasts will have the option to focus on their best areas. The more advanced gymnastics competitions will feature athletes who specialize in a particular event.

Female and male gymnastics differ somewhat in terms of events offered. For male gymnasts, the event choices consist of floor exercises, pommel horse, steel rings, vault, parallel bars and high bars. For female gymnasts, the events are floor exercises, balance beam, vault and uneven parallel.

Diet

Like all athletes, gymnasts must maintain a healthy diet as a part of proper training. A gymnast's diet should have a good balance of food groups and sufficient vitamins and minerals, little or no junk food, and plenty of water. Gymnasts also benefit from diets that are high in protein. Heavy concentrations of carbohydrates, especially in the days preparing for a competition, are often favored.

5k Run Work

Road races commonly feature a 5K event.

The 5K (5-kilometer) run is a popular distance among running enthusiasts and is equivalent to 3.10 miles. Organized 5K runs typically take the form of outdoor road races or cross country events. The 5K timed race is particularly popular in the running community because the distance requires a combination of strategy, endurance and speed.

Finding a 5K

In order to sign up for a registered 5K run, you must first find an event in your area. You can do this by doing Internet search engine or going to "Runner's World" magazine's website. There is a "race finder" link under the "tools" drop-down section at the top of the home page. The race finder allows you to conduct a search according to location, event size and date range. Be sure to select 5K as the designated race distance.

Course and Aid Stations

Most 5K runs take place on city streets or park trails. The course is usually clearly marked by race organizers, with signs and neon cones set in place to guide the runners. Whether you are a novice or experienced runner, it is always a good idea to scout a course before running it to gain a general sense of the terrain. A 5K course will typically have one or two aid stations along the way that will provide runners with water and other drinks. Aid stations also typically offer medical attention upon request.

Running

A runner's skill level will typically dictate what kind of experience he will have when running a 5K. Many novice runners sign up for 5Ks to have fun and challenge themselves to finish. On the other hand, experienced running enthusiasts may join a 5K for the competition or to try to establish a personal time record. They may also use the race as a tune-up for longer, more grueling distances.

Participant Experience

The success of an organized 5K event is not based on individual performance, but rather participant turnout. If race organizers provide a safe and fun environment for runners, they will most likely receive positive reviews and be in line to attract even more participants the next time they involve themselves with such an event.

Administer A Glucagon Injection

Administer a Glucagon Injection

When a diabetic has a hypoglycemic episode (a sudden drop in blood sugar), time is of the essence. If the person is conscious, give her glucose tablets, a sugar soft drink or something else with sugar and then call for emergency service. If the victim is unconscious, a glucagon injection may be the only option.

Instructions

Administer A Glucagon Injection

1. Find the diabetic person's glucagon injection kit, most likely stored in a small zipper case. There will be powder and vials of liquid (GlucaGen) and capped or wrapped syringes inside.

2. Put 1 mg of the included powder into a vial of GlucaGen.

3. Roll the vial back and forth quickly between your palms until the powder is dissolved.

4. Take out a syringe and remove the cap. Push the plunger all the way down.

5. Plunge the needle into the rubber cap of the vial and draw the liquid into the syringe. Pull the needle out.

6. Push the plunger gently until a few drops of liquid drip out to be sure that there is no air in the needle.

7. Plunge the needle all the way into a muscular area such as the curve of the calf. Push the plunger all the way down without any hesitation. Do not administer the Glucagon injection directly into a vein.

8. Call 911. When the person revives, give him some kind of simple sugar (glucose tablets, fruit juice or hard candy). Keep in mind the diabetic person only has 90 minutes after you administer the injection to receive professional medical attention.

How Does An Olympic Runner Train

Goals

Training as an Olympic runner involves more than physical conditioning. Along with being fit and healthy, runners in training must set realistic goals. Not only can a person's emotional outlook affect the ways in which a runner responds to and copes with stress, it has a lot to do with whether a runner believes that he can win. While there is no doubt that runners need strong legs and arms, a positive attitude is another essential quality runners training for the Olympics must have in order to successfully compete. A runner has to develop confidence in her abilities while learning to perform as a member of a team rather than as an individual.

Workouts

Resistance training required to build muscle and strength has many benefits. One advantage of this kind of exercise is that a runner either can focus on a particular muscle group that needs strengthening, or he can use resistance training to condition the whole body. When training your body to run long distances, you should concentrate first on how far you can run rather than how fast. Speed workouts can come later. The goal of a long distance runner is to train the body to keep moving even when fatigue sets in. At the same time, a runner should not ignore obvious signs of pain or feelings of tiredness. Even though you are aiming to increase your endurance by running longer, you don't want to push so hard that you get injured. Try increasing the total distance that you run each week by gradually adding one mile each time you run for up to ten miles. Once you can run ten miles, increase your runs by two miles each time if you think you can handle it. Take some days in between more intense training workouts to recover by running fewer miles.

Do not presume that you have to train seven days a week to be a successful athlete. Many athletes have found that they can train adequately by running three or four days each week. In fact, a study conducted at the University of Northern Iowa showed that runners who trained four days each week performed just as well as those who practiced nearly every day. They also ran more miles. Some runners also find it helpful to keep a log to record the number of miles, time and pace they run, as well as how they feel afterward.

Pace

While high intensity workouts should be of shorter duration, running any distance faster than your normal pace increases stamina. Some runners find that training intensely for two days, and then slowing up for two days to recover works well for them. Running fewer miles in between training seems to help, too. Another general rule to follow is not trying to increase intensity and distance both at the same time. Start out by running at a slower pace for the first few miles, and then begin to pick up your pace by a few seconds each mile. Once you get halfway through the run, do the reverse and slow down your pace. When you feel ready, pick up the pace again.

Nutrition

It takes a lot of energy to propel the body forward. For this reason, runners burn extra calories. Adequate iron intake keeps a runner from getting tired, as iron produces the hemoglobin in the red blood cells needed to carry oxygen from the lungs to the muscles. Unfortunately, runners frequently suffer low iron because the mineral is lost when they sweat. That's where eating a healthful diet comes in. Include lean beef, pork, lamb, dark meat from poultry, and seafood like oysters, clams, salmon and tuna in your diet. Spinach, broccoli and asparagus are other foods rich in iron. Drink orange juice for vitamin C needed to increase iron absorption in the body. Enough calcium should be part of a regular diet as well. Whether you go low fat or no fat, be sure to get 40 percent of the daily-recommended requirement for calcium. Dairy products are fortified with vitamin D, which also aids in calcium absorption. If you are training to increase the distance that you run, your body is going to need increased amounts of vitamin E. The key is to consume carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats needed for energy. Don't forget to drink plenty of liquids before, during and after a run to rehydrate.

Staying Fit

When running long distances, it may be helpful to take some walk breaks to reduce fatigue. You need only walk for a minute or two every few miles to help you recover your speed and reduce the risk of injury. Although an average long run probably should not exceed more than three hours, if continuous training begins to cause you problems, either slack off the training for a few weeks or consider a cross training program for a time. Even running on a treadmill will allow you to focus on practicing your running pace. While the value of using a treadmill as a serious training tool is often underestimated, you can simulate changes in outdoor running terrain by increasing or decreasing speed and incline every quarter mile or so. You can also monitor your heart rate for signs that you might be over training.

How Does An Olympic Archer Train

Archery Target

Training Location and Instructor

Training for the Olympics takes a lot of patience, hard work and determination. For Olympic archers, it is important to hone their skills and continue to improve in order to make it to the Olympics and, someday, bring home some medals.

An Olympic archer can start training at a young age, with some joining the Junior Olympic Archer Development (JOAD). JOAD membership age range goes from the ability to handle the bow safely in a group setting up to 18 years old. There, the budding young archer will learn all the techniques needed to become an archer. They train with different levels of instructors and can start participating in different archery competitions.

For an archer to be successful and be Olympic-bound, it is important to be able to find a good training location. It can be outdoors or indoors, provided there is enough space or room for the archer to train in targeting at different distances. When training for the Olympics, the goal is to be able to hit the face targets at 70 meters (229 feet, 8 inches) away.

It is also important to find an archery instructor or coach who can help with getting ready for the competition. There are highly trained and advanced-certified coaches who are especially familiar with teaching the BEST system (Bio-mechanically Efficient Shooting Technique) to archers. In addition, to train to be one of the best, one should find an advanced level 3 to 5 coach. The ideal advanced level instructor should have an excellent record of accomplishment and history in competing both in the local, nationals and international competition, which may include qualifying and competing for the Olympics. The coach should also be familiar with the Olympic standards and the game rules for archery.

Using the Right Equipment

Choosing the right equipment to use is also very important when training for Olympic archery competition. For the summer Olympics, the archer will compete using a recurve bow. Archery bows come in different weights, lengths and materials. An archer will perform a test to see if he would be a right hand or a left hand. A right-handed archer would hold the bow in his left hand and draw the string with his right hand.

For arrows, selecting the right length of arrow that would work with the bow is necessary. As the archer trains overtime, the weight of the bow will change; therefore, the arrow length may change as well. Although there is nothing wrong with choosing arrows that are a bit too long, especially when transitioning in between bow sizes, it is always better to have one that is just the right size.

Some equipment takes a while to get used to. It is up to the archer to learn tune his bow to achieve consistent shots and good arrow flights. Once an archer finds a good fit, it is necessary to use the same equipment during practice and competitions to get used to the equipment. It is also important to bring a spare set each time in case something breaks.

Practice Often and Staying Fit

The old adage that states that practice makes perfect holds very true for archery. To train for the Olympics, the archer should train regularly. Some archers train with a coach once a week and on their own at least twice a week. As it gets closer to the competition, training would be more frequent than usual.

Competing in the nationals would not only be necessary to qualify for Olympic archery but would also give the archer exposure and meet other archers who have similar desires. It would be a good idea to join in archery competitions, even the non-qualifying ones, just to get more practice and to improve on the skills required to prepare for Olympic archery competitions.

An archer should have a steady hand, a good eye and the ability to keep calm, even when there are distractions and in the presence of an audience. Joining archery competitions can help test the contestant's accuracy while maintaining focus.

Staying fit is also very important. Eating a healthy, exercising regularly and stretching prior to archery practice help in building strong arms and legs. Doing so will not only to help in carrying bows and being able to stand for a long period, but also to consistently shoot multiple times without wobbling. Maintaining good posture is also important in order to properly aim and handle the equipment.

How Does An 8track Tape Work

According to Recording History, 8-track cassettes were manufactured containing a magnetic loop of ¼-inch tape. Each tape was divided into eight channels of stereo sound, giving the tape format its 8-track name.

History

Recording History reports the 8-track audio playback format was created under the direction of Learjet business plane inventor Bill Lear. When Lear's airplanes were equipped with 4-track audio systems, Lear was unhappy with the quality, so in 1965 he marketed the first 8-track machines.

Tape

8 Track Heaven explains that the tape held within the 8-track cartridge is played in a continuous loop, because tape is pulled from the center of the cartridge and backs around the outside of the looped tape. The tape is passed over a playback head at the front of tape to create sound.

Channels

At each time the 8-track machine reads and plays two channels of audio to create stereo sound, according to 8 Track Heaven. When the loop of tape has been completed, the playback heads automatically reposition on the next channel to play the next stereo track.

How Carbohydrates Work In The Body

Introduction

Carbohydrates are required by the body as a major source of energy. Although they are often maligned, carbohydrates are a necessary part of a balanced diet and contribute to a healthy body. Carbohydrates exist in two forms, simple and complex. While they are derived from different sources and each has drawbacks, both types of carbohydrates are important to the body.

Two Types of Carbohydrates

Simple carbohydrates are also known as simple sugars. Foods such as white sugar and candies that contain refined sugar are a source of simple carbohydrates. Healthy foods such as fruit and milk also contain simple carbohydrates, along with other important vitamins and minerals. Therefore, it is more nutritious to acquire simple carbohydrates through healthy food containing natural sugars rather then items containing refined sugars.

Complex carbohydrates are also called starches. Complex carbohydrates are found in unprocessed grains, such as oatmeal and brown rice, which contain fiber and other nutrients vital to the body.

Function in the Body

Carbohydrates work in the body by being broken down into sugars. This is done by the liver, which transforms the carbohydrates into glucose, also known as blood sugar. The bloodstream then absorbs these sugars, which cause the pancreas to produce insulin. The bloodstream then transports the sugar with the assistance of insulin into the cells, where it is metabolized and converted into energy. Simple carbohydrates cause this to occur rapidly, which leads to feeling hungry more quickly. Complex carbohydrates take longer to digest, which leads to feeling fuller for an extended time. If more carbohydrates are consumed than needed, the body stores them in the form of fat as a future energy source.

The glycemic index is used to measure how quickly different types of carbohydrates are absorbed by the body and how high they raise blood sugar levels. This is important in helping to understand what types of carbohydrates are more beneficial to eat than others. If a food has a low glycemic index score, it is absorbed more slowly by the body and is therefore a good source of energy. Conversely, a high glycemic index score indicates a food is absorbed rapidly and may not be as nutritious.

How Shrink The Size Of My Calves

Large calf muscles can make wearing cowboy boots difficult.

The calf muscle is made up of the gastrocnemius and the soleus on the back of the lower leg. The calves can become too large for your liking due to physical training methods, genetics and excess fat tissue. There are several methods that can be employed on your own without spending money or with the help of medical physicians.

Exercise

Cardio exercise (such as running, walking, cycling and swimming) will get rid of any excess fat without building more muscle.

Stretch for 15 minutes before and after physical activity. Stretching, yoga and Pilates increase flexibility and make the muscles longer for a thinner appearance.

Strength train your calves three to four times per week. The key is high repetition and low weight exercises. You will improve your muscle tone without getting big calves. Do not use heavy weights or the result will be big, bulky calves. Try this exercise:

Calf raises: Hold a light dumbbell in each hand, or none at all, and stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Push up onto your toes and the balls of the front of your feet. Slowly lower back down until your feet are flat on the floor. Try standing with your toes pointing inward and outward for variety. The alternative to this exercise is to use the calf raise machine at a health club. Adjust the weight on the machine before you begin; use between 10 to 30 lbs. Position your shoulders under the pads and hold onto the handles. Perform a cal raise by pushing up onto your toes and slowly lowering back down.

Calf Reduction Surgeries

Selective neurectomy surgery gets rid of the nerve for the gastrocnemius, which causes the muscle to die. According to calfreduction.net, the calf muscle size is reduced by 1 to 3.5 cm and the recovery time is short. This method can be unpredictable and can cause the soleus muscle in the calf to work overtime, which can result in an abnormally shaped calf. Radio frequency can be used in selective neurectomy surgery to reduce scarring and improve results. Calf reduction may be as great as 6 cm.

A partial muscle resection is able to give a much more accurate and reliable result than selective neurectomy. This method works by cutting out parts of the muscle to sculpt the desired size of the calves. Recovery time can take 6 to 12 months. The surgery causes scarring.

According to calfreduction.net, the most invasive surgery for calf reduction is total excision of medial gastrocnemius. This surgery removes the whole medical gastrocnemius and eliminates the entire function of this muscle. There is scarring after surgery that will take time to fade away. Like the partial muscle resection, recovery time can be as long as six to 12 months.

How Make My Lungs Healthy

The lungs are the only way that oxygen can be absorbed by the body for delivery to all the organs. Humans cannot live without them. Environmental damage and certain infections can make the lungs chronically unhealthy. Although keeping the lungs healthy to begin with is desirable, there are several techniques to make the lungs healthy again if they become diseased.

Remove Environmental Harms

People who are smokers continuously damage their lungs by inhaling chemicals that irritate and harm the tissues of the lungs. Other people live or work in environments where air pollution is heavy. Anything from car pollution to gas-burning stoves can irritate and damage the lungs. It is important to remove those environmental harms or move to an area where they are less severe. This keeps the lung irritation low.

Aerobic Exercise

Like any other organ, the lungs react to exercise by adapting. Aerobic exercise is the type of exercise that taxes the lungs to work harder by demanding more oxygen to be delivered to the muscles. As more aerobic exercise is performed, the lungs adapt by creating more blood vessels both to irrigate the lung tissues and to absorb more oxygen, thus becoming stronger and healthier.

Incentive Spirometry

Incentive spirometry attempts to duplicate the effects on the lungs of long, continuous breathing, like yawning. This type of breathing expands the lungs to their fullest capacity. In time, patients using incentive spirometry learn to take in deep breaths to make better use of their entire lungs. The lungs then adapt to more oxygen being inhaled.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

People with certain lung conditions like chronic-obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) benefit greatly from pulmonary rehabilitation to make their lungs healthy. This type of rehabilitation consists of performing certain aerobic exercises under the strict supervision of a pulmonologist (a medical specialist in lung function). The pulmonologist will tailor the exercises to the needs of the patient, thus returning the lungs to health whenever possible.

Medication

Of course, it is not always possible to make lungs healthy through exercise and respiratory therapy. There are those cases where lung disease is advanced and the lungs need medication to become as healthy as they can be. Bronchodialators relax the muscles around the entrance to the lungs, and anti-inflammatory medication eases the inflammation caused by lung irritation or damage. Health care providers are the best to consult on what medications may work best.

How Lose Weight While Living With Asthma

If you were to believe all the late-night infomercials, weight loss is as easy as popping a pill. But true weight loss comes from lifestyle changes including healthy eating and exercise. When you have asthma, exercising for weight loss might seem to be an impossible task. But there are ways you can take the steps that are necessary for weight loss without flaring up asthma symptoms.

Why Lose Weight

Not only can certain forms of exercise be difficult when you have asthma, some medications (such as short-term oral corticosteroids) can increase hunger and lead to weight gain. Despite the added complications, you can lose weight while keeping your asthma symptoms under control. And losing excess pounds is worth the effort. Not only will you look great in a pair of jeans, you'll boost your energy and reduce your risk of many chronic conditions including heart disease and type 2 diabetes. What's more, losing excess pounds may have a positive impact on your lung function.

Asthma-Friendly Exercise

An active lifestyle is a necessary component for weight loss. In order to have an active lifestyle, it's important to know your own triggers and limitations. If cold air often triggers asthma symptoms, then you can rule out hockey and other cold-weather sports. And people with exercise-induced asthma often have trouble with endurance sports like long-distance running and soccer.

However, many cardio options are well-suited to people living with asthma. Choose sports that involve shorter bursts of activity such as volleyball or baseball. And exercise in the comfort of your own living room--such as following an exercise DVD or walking on a treadmill--is also a good choice. You can monitor your breathing and take breaks as needed. Swimming or water aerobics are also good choices.

If you're experiencing asthma symptoms, you can take a break from cardio but still get a good workout. Try strength training or follow a yoga DVD.

Be sure to talk to your doctor before you start any new exercise routine. Your doctor may recommend an inhaler to use before you exercise. Depending on your asthma triggers, other preventions like exercising indoors on high pollen-count days may also be advisable.

Healthy Eating With Asthma

To lose weight, there is one simple rule you need to follow: Burn more calories (through exercise and metabolism) than you eat. There's no need to choke down chalky-tasting diet drinks or buy special foods. Just choose nutrient dense foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean protein and whole grains.

While the jury is still out, there is some debate that certain foods can trigger asthma symptoms. The good news is, suspect foods--such as foods high in saturated fat and/or sodium-- are ones that are wise to avoid when you're trying to lose weight anyway. In addition, it's also important to avoid any foods that trigger an allergic response for you.

How Lose Weight In My Legs

To achieve weight loss in the legs, you must lose weight in the entire body. Exercise and diet play major roles in losing unwanted pounds. However, along with diet, specific exercises target the legs by focusing on the calves, hamstrings, thighs, and quadriceps. Combining these exercises into your lifestyle along with a balanced diet will help you lose weight and strengthen leg muscles.

Cardiovascular Exercises

High-intensity cardiovascular exercises that specifically target the legs will help tone muscle, boost metabolism, and in turn promote weight loss in legs. Cycling, dancing, swimming, stair-climbing, brisk walking, and sports such as soccer focus on your legs and burn fat. The American College of Sports Medicine suggests at least 20 minutes of cardiovascular exercises at least three times per week. Consult with your physician as to which exercises would be the most beneficial to you.

Strength Training

Along with high-intensity aerobic exercises, strength training that specifically targets your legs will help with weight loss. According to Georgia State University's Department of Kinesiology and Health, a combination of several lower body strength training exercises should be incorporated into your workout regime. Squats, lunges, leg extensions, leg curls, hip abduction, and calf raises all help to strengthen your legs and increase your metabolism. Check with your health care professional before starting strength training.

Diet

Exercise goes hand in hand with a low-fat diet for weight loss. To lose weight, you must consume a diet void of high fat, refined sugars, and empty calories. Eating the right combination of foods will promote weight loss all over, including your legs. The Mayo Clinic suggests consuming daily servings of fruits, dairy, lean meats, vegetables, and whole grains, while reducing your intake of saturated fats, sweets, and cholesterol. Drink plenty of water to control your appetite, which in turn helps you reduce portion sizes.

Fundraiser Ideas For Nonprofit Organizations

Raise money with low investment, ongoing fundraiser programs.

Non-profit organizations must raise money to run their programs, support their causes and maintain operations. Since these organizations often rely on donations in order to survive, fundraisers spell the difference in success and failure for many organizations. There are many different options for raising funds for a non-profit, but thinking of new and creative ways to raise money is often the key to success.

Art Auction

Artists are all around us if we take the time to look for them. No matter where the organization is located, it is likely that there are local artists who would enjoy a chance to showcase their work for a good cause. Soliciting art donations of all types from artists or galleries, and offering a receipt for a tax deduction can be the first step in putting together a successful fundraiser built around an art auction.

Obtain a space that will allow people to sit, stand, mingle and explore a makeshift art gallery that features all of the donations collected prior to the event. A jazz trio or other type of soft music should accompany the beginning of the event. Finger foods and wine or other drinks can be served and people should be encouraged to look at all of the work and the biographical information posted about the pieces before the formal auction begins. Ask an auctioneer to volunteer some time to run the auction and sell the donated art to the highest bidder.

Recycling Fundraiser

A recycling fundraiser is an environmentally conscious event that can raise money all year long for the organization. All that is required, aside from the promotion of the program, is the acquisition of recycling bins to place on the property of the organization and in various places in the area. Aluminum is a recyclable material that yields money when turned in. Ask businesses, factories or other organizations in town to partner with your non-profit to help raise money through the collection of recycled cans. They can place small bins in their places of business to collect cans from employees or customers that are turned in weekly or monthly to the non-profit's main bin on property.

The staff must sort and transport the cans to the recycling station to collect the money, but it is a small investment of time for the surprising amount that can be raised through an ever-growing network of partners. This kind of fundraiser is particularly appropriate for environmentally oriented non-profits.

Online Fundraising

Organizations that do not attempt to take advantage of the latest technology will end up losing out on big opportunities. Developing a fundraiser through social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace or Twitter can bring many people on board to get behind a cause by giving them a quick and easy way to make donations.

Paypal, for example, offers non-profits a donations button to add to posts or websites so that donors can easily send a donation with a couple of clicks of the mouse. With the extensive friends, follower or fan lists that can be developed on social networking as well as the friends of friends concept, online fundraising could quickly become the most lucrative portion of your fundraising efforts.

How Big A Heating Unit Do I Need

The right size heating unit will efficiently heat a home.

Correctly calculating the size of the heating unit will result in an efficient means of heating a home. The size of heating units is usually given in British Thermal Units. Does this Spark an idea?

Calculation

The calculation of heating unit size involves the measurement of the total volumes of all rooms in the house. Dividing this total volume by 0.133 gives the number of British Thermal Units (BTUs). Multiplying this number by the number of degrees of temperature increase needed and rounding it off to the nearest thousand gives the total heater size required, in BTUs.

Key Factors

Key factors in correctly sizing a heating unit include the size and shape of the house and the direction it faces. The local climate is also a factor as are the insulation levels in the house. The total areas of windows and their location and type will affect the heating of the house. Additional factors are the heat output from lights and major home appliances, and the temperature comfort level of the occupants.

Over-Sizing

It's important to correctly size the heating unit you need. Installing a unit which is too large will force it to run below its most efficient level. The unit will cycle on and off more frequently, putting more wear and tear on the electrical components. Over-sized heating units are louder and more expensive to run than smaller ones.

Herniated Or Bulging Disc Symptoms

You've most likely heard someone mention something concerning a "slipped disc." Well, they're pretty much talking about a herniated or bulging disc. It's basically a number of ways to say the same thing. A herniated or bulging disc is ultimately a disc between the vertebrae of the spinal cord that has become damaged. When this happens, there are some very key symptoms that will affect a person in this condition.

Pain

The most common and evident symptom of a herniated or bulging disc will be pain near and around the area of the damage. It will range from dull to sharp or throbbing to shooting.

Neighboring Pain

Another common symptom of a herniated or bulging disc will involve neighboring pain, usually running down the leg. This happens when the damaged disc place pressure on the sciatic nerve. It may also start to affect your neck, shoulder or arm.

Numbness

Sometimes, the herniated or bulging disc may also cause a certain level of numbness or tingling to the affected area and running down the leg.

Weakness

A herniated or bulging disc can also cause you to seemingly lose some of your strength within your back, shoulder or neck.

Stiffness

It should come as no surprise that a herniated or bulging disc may also elicit stiffness within these same areas of the body. This is due to the reaction the muscles have to the damage of the disc, becoming tense and essentially overcompensating for the injury.

Immobility

Many people who are suffering from a herniated or bulging disc can begin to experience immobility, in that they may find more difficult to bend or move around until the disc has been treated.

How Are Lapbands Secured

How Are Lap-Bands Secured?

For people with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or even higher, gastric surgery may be an option to help them regain control over their weight and their lives. A Lap-Band procedure is one such surgery that is minimally invasive and fully adjustable after the band has been inserted. The Lap-Band helps restrict food passage and allows the patient to feel full soon after eating, which leads to fewer calories eaten throughout the day.

Instructions

1. Understand the procedure. The surgeon will cut three to five 1-cm incisions in the abdomen, providing access points to the upper stomach. She will then insert the gastric band device through the incisions and place it around the upper part of the stomach. This results in a small pouch created at the top of the stomach.

2. Know how the band is secured. It is inflated, adjusting the size of the pouch, which also adjusts how much food can be eaten at one time.

3. Plan for recovery. Patients can be released home to begin their recovery after a 24 to 28 hour hospital stay for observation. The Lap-Band can continue to be adjusted over time based on weight loss results.

Hot Tub Spa Pump Troubleshooting

Hot tub pump problems typically restricts the water flow in the tub.

Hot tub spa pumps do most of the work in the tub's plumbing. A faulty pump will often result in restricted water flow and reduce the output of jets inside the hot tub. Pumps can have a variety of issues, which will require you to follow some steps for troubleshooting. Does this Spark an idea?

Facts

Pumps that do not work may need you to reset power to the spa. You can either press the "reset" button at the GFCI or turn off power at the breaker. After you turn power back on, the pump will re-prime, attempting to correct any problems.

Diagnostics

Low water inside the hot tub or an extremely dirty filter can limit the amount of water the pump draws from the tub. This will cause the pump to work improperly and possibly not at all. Clogged intakes inside the tub can also cause pump problems.

Considerations

Noisy, humming or excessive vibration can indicate major pump problems. You can open the access panel to ensure all pump valves are open and no issues exist with the plumbing. Replacing the pump may require a service call from the dealer.

Hot Tub Pump Troubleshooting

Hot Tub Pump Troubleshooting

Poor Water Flow

Hot tub pumps tend to be extremely well made. They will continue to run at full bore for as long as electricity is being supplied to them, right up until they break entirely. That's not something that can really be fixed by a layman. If there is a problem with a hot tub, the problem does not typically originate in the pump. If the water flow from the jets is low, or has very little pressure, there are a few possible reasons why. The water level of the hot tub could be low, falling below the intakes and therefore unable to pass through the pump. If that's the case, simply add more water to the tub. The intakes could be also be blocked or partially obscured by something. Just feel around them for any loose tub toys or articles of clothing that might've become lodged there. If there's nothing blocking the intakes and the water level is sufficient, then there's likely a clog within the tub filter. You must remove the tub filter housing, inside which will be a cartridge filter through which the tub water passes as it cycles through the pump. Rinse the filter out thoroughly and make sure that water can pass through it without difficulty before slotting it back into place and starting the pump again.

No Water Flow Though Pump is on

If the pump is turned on, though no water is flowing through the intakes or jets, a number of problems may have occurred. The pump may not have been primed. Essentially there's a large air pocket stuck in the pump's impeller chamber that prevents water from being pulled through. Just fill the chamber with water from a bucket or hose and then start the pump again to fix this. The lines leading to and from the pump may have leaks, though you'll be able to see this by the huge puddle of water forming around the outside of the pump from the leaking pipes. You could patch the lines with water-resistant plumber's tape, though a more long-term fix would be to replace the pipes entirely. The only other possible reason for this problem is that the impeller within the pump, the paddle which spins to create the water flow, is broken. If this is the case, the pump must be replaced entirely.

Pump Won't Start

The only easy fix for a pump that won't start is to check and make sure that it's plugged into a working electrical outlet. These pumps run off electricity, so if the outlet isn't working, obviously neither will the pump. There could be a problem with the control circuits connecting the pump to the electrical cord. Most hot tubs have an internal circuit breaker to reduce any possible danger of electrocution. Reset the breaker and see if the pump runs then. If not, then either the circuitry is damaged, or the pump has seized up. In either case a certified repair person must be contacted to assess the problem and fix it.

Hot Dog Cart Laws

A hot dog cart must be licensed like any other food business. Permit regulations vary, even within cities and can be quite strict. As with any food establishment, you will have to meet standards of cleanliness, storage, handling, cooking and holding temperatures.

Even hot dog carts are regulated businesses.

Public Health Inspection

Your cart will have to meet public health department standards and be inspected and stickered before you will be eligible for a permit to operate your stand. Even if you set up in non-city areas, you will need a permit from your county health department. Check with health department officials regarding health standards before the inspection. Don't assume that because you passed an inspection in one county that you'll be approved in another. Standards vary by county.

Local Permits and Licenses

Permits can vary by county, city and even neighborhood. Your permit may only entitle you to operate in a certain area. You may not be able to switch carts from one area to another if you have more than one cart. You may have to have a separate concession contract in order to operate within park boundaries in addition to a city permit. The permit office can help you obtain all necessary permits for your hot dog cart.

Times

Your permit will specify what times you may operate your cart. You will have to have a special permit to operate outside those hours. Some time permits also restrict what days you can operate.

Location

You may be prohibited from operating in certain areas, such as high traffic areas, near schools, bus stops, fire hydrants, hospitals, private property (without notarized permission) or public buildings. You may have to meet requirements for how close to the street you can be, which side of the street you can be on or who you can sell to. Check your permit before setting up your stand. Depending on your location, you may need an additional certificate of occupancy.

Beverages

Separate licenses and permits may be required for preparing and selling such beverages as coffee, juices, shakes and shaved ice items. Selling alcohol probably requires a separate permit or license and it may be prohibited to sell certain foods and alcoholic beverages from the same vehicle.

Summary

Setting up a pushcart vending business requires serious consideration, an investment of time and money to meet government regulations and acquire the licenses, contracts and permits needed to legally operate. In addition, you will need to obtain a Tax ID number from the Internal Revenue Service, set up with the state to pay sales tax if that is required. You'll need to establish a bookkeeping system or hire a bookkeeper to do your books and figure your taxes. Make sure, therefore, that you find a good, high traffic spot and produce a good product. This is a real business and you must treat it like one.

Apply Online For A Service Dog

A guide dog walking abreast of a blind individual is the most widely identified symbol of a human and service dog relationship. The utilization of service dogs is not limited to the blind. According to the 1990 Americans with Disabilities act, "The ADA defines a service animal as any guide dog, signal dog, or other animal individually trained to provide assistance to an individual with a disability." While the review process may require phone conversations and the review of medical records, many organizations with a mission of training service dogs provide a means for members of the public to apply online.

Instructions

1. Visit the Internet home pages of groups that train service dogs or match individuals with service dogs. Organizations may be discovered through Internet searches or by recommendation of support groups or health care providers related to the individual disability.

2. Carefully read the criteria of each service animal group. Some groups only train and supply service dogs to assist individuals with a specific disability. Preference is not discriminatory. Rather, the group specializes in training dogs to perform specific areas of assistance. For example, America's VetDogs matches wounded veterans with service dogs, while Leader Dogs for the Blind assists persons with limited vision.

3. Compile medical information detailing physical limitations. Have medical records, military records and contact information for current rehabilitation programs or doctors on hand. Questions may reference the information.

4. Click to the application section of the website. The correct page may be labeled "Apply" or "Application."

5. Fill out the online questionnaire as thoroughly and as truthfully as possible. In addition to identifying questions and medical history, applications may ask whether the applicant is prepared to care for a dog financially. While the organization may provide the service dog at no expense to the applicant, routine veterinary visits and food are the responsibility of the applicant.

6. Hunt for secondary forms on the website. Fill out supporting forms, such as information releases. This gives an organization permission to contact references or to gather additional information to aid in the application process.

7. Submit the application when it has been completely filled out.

Funny Ideas To Raise Money

Everyone knows someone who has a child or student who is doing a fundraiser for one organization or another. These events do not have to be tedious or even the standard sales fundraisers; they can be fun and interactive while raising money for the cause. When trying to come up with a new or unique fundraiser, try finding a program or event that the participants can enjoy, this will help boost participation and success.

Sports Organizations

Sports organizations often use the tried and proven method of sales for fundraising to purchase equipment and uniforms. Rather than having them try to outsell each other and have to push participation of both the parents and the players, try something different. A wacky water tournament is one low cost idea. Have the players pass out event flyers and charge admission or entry fees. Doing this at the sports complex grounds saves on having to pay for a location, while using water balloons and spray hoses as the tools of the tournament saves on equipment costs as well. Ideas for the tournament include water balloon ball, like baseball but with water balloons, and water tag, like laser tag but with water guns. Think up several events that can have a water substitute and have fun while raising money for the team.

Small Private Schools

Many small private schools face a big problem when it comes to fundraising-not enough students to raise the needed funds. Try hosting a murder mystery party and dinner; participants will be immersed in an evening of treachery, murder, blackmail, intrigue and back stabbing. Guests assume the roles of characters in the plot, and at the end the killer, or killers, is revealed. To make this party into a fundraiser, simply outline the expenses, which should equal twenty to twenty-five percent of the funds expected to be raised. Based on this cost set the ticket price and have students post announcements with RSVP information included. Place a "tip" jar near the entrance after all the guest/players have arrived to encourage extra donations at the end of the party.

Causes

Try something new to raise money and awareness for a specific cause; for example animal shelters can set up a "Caged for Critters" event where people can have a friend, family member or co-worker "caught" and "caged." These people will be released when a specified amount is raised for the cause. The participants can be housed in large kennel-style enclosures at either a public place like the food court at a mall or in a busy downtown park. Contacting local media to have the event covered can spread the word without adding advertisement costs. Those captured should be allowed to contact friends and family to help pay their "fine," thus raising both money and awareness for the cause. This can become an annual event for the entire community.

Good Paints For Body Painting

Many religions decorate the bride in henna before the marriage ceremony.

Body paint is not the same type of paint that one would use for paintings, nor house paints. The average person can be painted from head to toe with 16 to 20 fluid ounces of body paint. Body paint can be used to hide or enhance natural body features. It can be used in small areas of the body, such as on the face at a kid's birthday party, or it can be used to cover the whole body. Traditionally, it is a fun addition to many costumes. There are a handful of good paints for body painting, depending on the desired effect.

Liquid Latex

Liquid latex is made of rubber that self-vulcanizes at room temperature. It forms a thin, flexible layer that can even be used in place of clothing. It is available in many colors, but these colors will stain clothing. The first layer will take about five to 10 minutes to dry enough to apply other layers. The liquid latex will take one hour to dry completely. When your are done, the liquid latex can be peeled off.

Water-based paint

Water-based paints are easy to use and dry quickly. They also wash off quickly with just soap and water. They have little odor and generally are non-toxic. They are ideal for children's sensitive skin and are ideal for use in face painting at a children's party. However, they are not as long-lasting as other body paints, providing a temporary creative experience.

Oil-based paint

Oil-based paints are also known as alcohol-based paints. They are longer-lasting and more durable than water-based paints, but they are also more toxic and take longer to dry. They are waterproof and sweat-proof. Apply a moisturizing cream beforehand to help the paint stay set. Use lotion with mineral oils when taking off the paint. These are hazardous paints, so be careful when applying to sensitive skin and do not get too close to eyes, nose and mouth.

Henna

Henna is a plant used to dye skin, hair and fabric. The ancient tradition of henna as a body art has been used to decorate women's bodies for festivals and celebrations for thousands of years. Henna reacts to the temperature of your skin, and will therefore develop faster and darker with warmer skin. It will typically last a couple of weeks, depending on temperature and amount of washing.

Acquire Associate Sponsorship For A Race Team

In any form of auto racing, it is better to use someone else's dollars to achieve racing success. You can help yourself and help your associate sponsor reach a greater audience through associate racing sponsorship. This can be accomplished by following a few easy steps.

Instructions

1. Find the associate sponsors in your racing area that can appeal to the most fans. Good examples are local gas stations, family-owned restaurants, local bottling firms and local convenience stores. This is a good starting point, because all race fans utilize these services.

2. Prepare a sponsor request package. Ensure you direct your aim to the level of the sponsor. Initially, sponsors like to provide services instead of dollars to see the response they will get from race fans and race teams.

3. Present a positive and proactive approach. Everyone loves a positive relationship and sponsorship of a race team is no different.

4. Keep in constant communication to ensure the prospective sponsor is pleased with the progress. Be prepared for additional requests from the prospective sponsor.

5. Keep track of all sponsorship services that will be provided. Accurate record keeping will keep both parties happy with the relationship.

Fluid And Electrolyte Imbalance In Children

Electrolytes are salts and minerals found in all body fluids that must be in balance for children's health. Electrolytes can become depleted through sweating, sickness, or from some medications. Excess electrolytes can build up through poor diet or kidney problems.

Different Electrolytes

Make sure children get plenty of fluids on hot days.

Sodium, potassium and calcium are major electrolytes in both children and adults. Levels of one or more electrolytes can swing out of balance and cause illness.

Loss of Water

Start hydrating your child before they feel thirsty.

When water is excreted from the body, electrolytes are flushed out, too. This can happen through excessive sweating, certain medications, or sickness that causes fever, vomiting or diarrhea. Oral rehydration with a balanced electrolyte solution can treat early stages of dehydration---check with your doctor if you suspect your child is dehydrated.

Signs of Dehydration

Illness or excessive sweating should alert you to look for dry mouth, no tears when crying, or dry and cool skin. Other signs include slowness or irritability, or fatigue or dizziness in older children. Don't wait until a child feels thirsty to start rehydrating. Use popsicles, juice, water or commercial electrolyte solutions as early as possible.

Retention of Water

Retention of water causes electrolytes to build up beyond normal levels. This is more common in older people due to kidney failure. Some children drink pool water when they swim, but they would have to ingest several gallons to exhibit overhydration symptoms.

Signs of Water Retention

Check for swelling in the lower legs and excess fluid in the chest and abdomen---physical signs of overhydration. Since this can signal kidney, heart or liver problems, always have suspected overhydration checked by your doctor as quickly as possible. Treatments include decreased fluid intake and increased sodium intake. In some cases, diuretics may be prescribed.

How Get Noticed By College Track Coaches

Getting a running scholarship for college can open doors that include competing in NCAA athletic events and preparing for greater athletic opportunities, such as the Olympic Games. College track coaches, like other college athletic coaches, attend high school track events and college running camps to recruit talented high school athletes. Because college track coaches see so many students during recruiting visits, you must be prepared to stand out when the opportunity to make an impression arises.

Instructions

1. Practice running faster with each run. Coach Jay of runnerscoach.com suggests making note of how fast current college track athletes run to gauge how much you need to improve. Running as fast or faster than currently enrolled track athletes could get college track coaches to notice you at competitions.

2. Attend a runners camp hosted by a college. College track coaches host summer running camps to help current and prospective track athletes improve their speed and technique. College Sports Scholarships says that track coaches from other colleges often visit the camps to watch attendees and recruit their next year's team. You must exhibit exemplary behavior, as well as athletic prowess, to attract attention.

3. Send a video that shows your skills to track coaches at the colleges where you would like to apply. The National Collegiate Scouting Association recommends making yourself memorable by including a personalized letter to the coach. Also include information about your grades and standardized test scores.

Fun Fundraising Ideas For Outofschool Activities

A dance-a-thon is a fun fundraiser idea for an out-of-school actiivty.

Many out-of-school activities, such as youth sports, bands, cheerleading, church groups, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and college sororities, rely on fundraisers for money to buy uniforms, purchase equipment or go to camp. Workplaces and clubs also have fundraisers to raise money for things like office parties or club functions. With some imagination, it's easy to come up with fun fundraising ideas.

Babies and Preschoolers

Preschoolers normally do well selling traditional fundraiser items, such as greeting cards, wrapping paper, magazines, candles and candy. Children outgrow clothing and toys so quickly, so an organization may want to have a clothes and toys resale. Arrange clothing on long tables according to size, and toys should be arranged by appropriate ages. Include items like strollers, high chairs, cribs and car seats. For additional profits, charge an entry fee of $1.

Children

Children can help the community by collecting recyclables from friends, family and neighbors. In addition to collecting cans, bottles and paper, children can collect printer ink cartridges. Find a company that recycles ink cartridges that will pay the organization per cartridge. For more information on recycling ink cartridges, call the International Cartridge Recycling Association at (202) 857-1154. Kids can collect money from local businesses and plant a tree with a plaque stating the name of the donor. Children love video games, so have a video game competition and have children receive donations from sponsors.

Teens

As teens are a little older and able to handle more responsibilities, a "Hire a Kid for a Day" auction is a fun option. Adults bid on teens and can have them do chores such as yard work, household chores or babysitting. Older teens may have success by selling photos. They can dress up in costumes according to the season, such as Santa, Cupid, a leprechaun, Easter Bunny, Uncle Sam, pilgrims or even the Statue of Liberty, and have their pictures taken with patrons of the store. Teens would need to find a local photographer that is willing to donate their time, reserve a spot in a local mall or department store and check with costume shops for costume donations. Teens usually have an easy time selling candy and gum to their peers. Another option is to purchase Smencils, which are scented pencils made from recycled newspapers, and sell them to their fellow classmates.

Adults

Adults can create recipe books or how-to books to sell to their peers. Crafty people can donate their crafts for a craft boutique. Work fundraiser events can include a day where employees can dress down for a fee, this could be anything from wearing jeans for a day to a pajama day at work. Raffles can include lunch with the CEO, a premium parking space, a paid day off or a day where the boss does the employee's work for them.

All Ages

People of all ages love food, and food fundraisers can often bring in some big bucks. Instead of going for the traditional spaghetti dinner, meals could be an all-you-can-eat potato bar with baked potatoes and all the fixings, taco bar or a soup and salad bar. During the summer months, ice cream sundaes or root beer floats are fun options. Marathons are fun fundraisers for all ages. Besides the common dance marathons, think outside the box and try a miniature golf marathon, a bowl-a-thon or a swim-a-thon. The participants have fun at the marathons and earn money by getting sponsors.

First Trimester Pregnancy Exercises

Nice and Easy

Regular exercise during pregnancy is healthy for both mother and baby. The benefits include a lower risk of developing gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia, less weight gain, more flexibility, less physical discomfort in the last trimester, and less pain during labor and delivery. The first trimester is a great time to develop an exercise program and routine that you can keep throughout your pregnancy.

Benefits

All doctors recommend exercise during pregnancy, but with high-risk pregnancies there may be some specific advisories so always discuss your exercise plan with your physician. During the first trimester most women will experience stress, constipation, fatigue and indigestion. The good news is exercise helps with all of those symptoms. Studies show that even vigorous exercise is safe during pregnancy but it's good to limit exercise to 30 minutes a day. The more active and fit you stay during pregnancy the sooner you will return to your pre-pregnant physique after delivery.

Get Moving

Exercises that are recommended for the first trimester include: walking, swimming, bike riding (if you are experienced), step machines, rowing machines, light aerobics, and light weight training. If you are experienced, in athletic shape, and have the OK from your physician, you can also include: jogging (on flat surfaces), tennis (doubles only), cross-country skiing, ice or roller skating (only until your belly expands), hiking, volleyball, Pilates, kick-boxing and dance workouts.

What to Avoid

There are some forms of exercise and physical activities that carry too much risk to participate in while pregnant. Jogging (on uneven terrain or over two miles a day), horseback riding, waterskiing, diving or jumping into pools, scuba diving, softball, football, sprinting, downhill skiing, biking (on anything but flat, smooth, even surfaces), and most calisthenics (unless specifically designed for pregnancy). Exercises that require heavy use of abdominal muscles or lying on your back for a long period of time should be avoided as well. Keep moving, keep it safe, and you will feel better throughout your pregnancy.
